After setting a shining example himself, Aditya Tiwari now runs a sup-

A
ll I wanted was to adopt a mentally challenged child, what I got
for 18 months was mental, emotional and financial trauma. I
first saw Avnish, now my son, during a visit to an orphanage
in Indore in 2014. The authorities told me he wasnt adopted
because he was mental. It is unfortunate people still describe
disorders such as Downs Syndrome like this. I instantly decided I wanted
to give the child a home. But adoption was far from easy, I was a single
man and 27 years old. I was told the fivemonthold child was being given
up for international adoption. I later realised it was a racket; they hadnt
registered the child in government records, which is mandatory. I decided
to fight this. In the next one year, I made over 30 trips from Pune to Bhopal,
wrote numerous letters to everyone, from the prime minister and the
women and child welfare minister to the Madhya Pradesh government.
People laughed at me, saying I was either impotent or that this was my
biological child outside marriage. Things changed when Maneka Gandhi
visited the orphanage. After that, they reviewed my case and I was allowed
to adopt the boy. I later found out he had been abandoned by his affluent
Bhopalbased parents. It is a pity people see children with challenges as a
liability; the mindset needs to change. This experience has sensitised me
further. When I got married last July, instead of inviting family and friends,
I organised a feast and gifts for 10,000 underprivileged people, food for
animals from shelters, strays and the zoo. As told to Aditi Pai

HOW TO TRAIN

A timely pointer to how Indias foreign policy falls short of the
challenges posed by Chinas growing potency
By Ananth Krishnan
L
et alone China, India cannot even win a
war against Pakistan is the stark warn-
ing delivered in the very first few pages of
Dragon on Our Doorstep. It sets the tone
of what is to follow in the subsequent 400-odd
pages: an exhaustive overview of the growing mil-
itary challenge India confronts from its two trou-
blesome neighbours, and a clear prescription of
what needs to be done.
There is certainly no shortage of books on
Indias China threat (or, alas, of those determined
to unimaginatively insert dragon or elephant
into their titles, seemingly at all costs). The title not-
withstanding, this new book by Pravin Sawhney
and Ghazala Wahab is a welcome intervention in
this genre, eschewing trite comparisons between
the neighbours to provide a hard-nosed reality
check on the challenge India faces from across the
Himalayas. Sawhney, who retired early from the
Indian Army, is an accomplished defence journal-
ist and author of books on Indias defence reforms
and Operation Parakram. His co-author Wahab
is a journalist who edits, along with Sawhney, a
magazine on national security and defence issues. Illustration by ANIRBAN GHOSH
The authors argue that Indias China policy is
fundamentally flawed because it has consistently
ignored the military dimension. India is per-

Familiarity helps people to bond. Women who work in an
environment characterised by friendship and laughter are
more creative and less stressed. This translates to better
productivity and increased innovation. Monthly lunches and
office parties help one discover like-minded people. At times
one must make deliberate efforts to understand their peers as
these are the people you interact with on a day-to-day basis.

an island kitchen does not augur very well in an Indian cooking

LEGACY
A PEEK INTO KAKORI, A SMALL
TOWN NEAR LUCKNOW
n By SRISHTI JHA
T
he city of Lucknow comes across like
a Djinn now, coming out of folklores
and history, awaiting your wishes to
be fulfilled and surprise you. A den of
Nawabs and kebabs and overwhelm-
ing warmth running through its veins, the
liveliness doesnt end in the city itself.
Kakori, a small town on the periphery of
Lucknow in the mango belt of Malihabad
about 25 kilometers from the cityshares the
same spirit. The Renaissance Group of Hotels
took the guests of Renaissance Lucknow for
a day trip to Kakori to experience the insight-
ful history, heritage and local traditions of the
town, mainly famous for the Kakori train rob-
bery that happened in 1925, one of the
significant events during Indias freedom
movement. Home to some of the greatest
poets like Mohsin Kakorvi and Ghulam Ahmed
Alavi, Kakori remains a dwelling to all things
beautiful like the old havelis and the fading art
of Zardozi. To live up to the local flavour, the
mango orchards are a must visit, famous for
their Dasheri mangoes. The orchard was deco-
rated with beautiful baithaks and the locals
welcomed the guests with fresh aam pannas,
roses and freshly cut mangoes. Few Zardozi
karigars put their work on display along with
Chikankari and Kamdani embroideries and
narrated stories of how once the embroidery
form was used to decorate the wardrobe of the
royals in India. The guests were entertained by
recitals of famous sayings about Lucknow and
Kakori. A beautiful qawwali performance was
organised by the local qawwals at the orchard.
An ideal weekend getaway, Kakori still
remains rooted and cultural and houses
many narratives that are waiting
to be discovered and lanes to be
walked into.
