In this observation, I focused on the teaching. This is a 400-Level Grammar class, which
is for lower intermediate students. Most of students were from Korea, others came from
Saudi Arabia and China. I hoped to know that how the teacher develops learner-centered
teaching.
One thing taht impress me a lot in this class is that Debbie established a real safe,
relaxing and comfortable atmosphere for learner. Fisrstly, the teacher maintained
confident yet approachable. She greeted to every students before the class and chated
with them like friends. The effective teacher presence plays an indispensable role in
narrowing the distance between the teacher and students. In addition, Debbie paid
attention to students mental status. She played gentle music when students did some
exercise, which made students feel relaxed. Especially for introverted students, they felt

students passion about completing both individual work and pair work.
Before every practice, the teacher gave students some examples of what they are

from the paragraph, she gave a model and completed the first sentence with students
together. Then she wrote the example on the board, which provided a visual example for
learners. I learned that it was a good way to help students, especially slow learners,
understand the teachers direction. Debbies class included individual work, pair work
and whole-class work. According to Richards and Farrell(2010), cultivating an
environment of cooperation is an important skill in learner-centered teaching (p. 120).
This demonstrated that the teacher held the pair work and group work has a positive
