S7L4. E. Describe the characteristics of Earths major terrestrial biomes (i.e. tropical rainforest, savannah, temperate, desert, taiga, tundra, and mountain) and aquatic communities (i.e. freshwater, estuaries, and marine). Student Response Technology Used: NearPod Socrative PollEverywhere iRespond TodaysMeet Other: Kahoot Technology that students will use to respond to questions/prompts: Computer Hand-held student response system (such as iRespond) Phone Tablet (such as iPad Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch) Describe the instructional activities that will occur prior to the SRS activity and how you will introduce the SRS activity: Before the students participate in the Kahoot activity we will learn the characteristics of each type of biome. Students will take notes and complete research on the above biomes. Once we have completed the necessary research to know all of the characteristics of the biomes then we will begin the kahoot activity. It will be introduced as a competition: the game is competing against peers to answer the questions correctly and first. All students will be asked to log into the kahoot app on their phones. If a student does not have a phone then they can use either a tablet or the classroom computer. They will log in according to the activity room number that I will provide for them. Describe the purpose of the SRS activity (check all that apply): Assess Prior Knowledge Anticipatory Set (Create Interest in a Topic) To Illuminate Common Misconceptions Formative Assessment of Content Knowledge (for purposes of differentiation and mastery for ALL students) Summative Assessment of Content Knowledge Test Preparation Survey/Poll Discussion Starter Homework Collection Other Additional explanation of purpose (optional):
Type of session: Teacher-Paced Student-Paced
Identification of students: Students will log-in so their individual scores will be available to you after the session SRS activity will be anonymous Briefly describe what will happen during the SRS activity All students will be asked to log into the kahoot app on their phones. If a student does not have a phone then they can use either a tablet or the classroom computer. They will log in according to the activity room number that I will provide for them. The questions will be based off of the characteristics of Earths major terrestrial biomes and aquatic communities. Once everyone is logged into the site the teacher can start the activity. Students will then complete the questions as quickly as possible. The questions are timed. Students have a certain amount of time to answer the question, but if everyone in the class answers before that time is up then the summary report will pop up. The results will pop up students with the top 5 scores out of everyone. This summary pops up after each question. Then, you can proceed to the next one. This activity is fun and engaging for students. It allows all students to all answer the questions and test their knowledge. However, it has a fun component to allow students some competition amongst one another to be in the top 5. This activity assesses student knowledge and allows them to prepare for the exam covering the content mentioned.

Blooms Level of Critical Thinking Required (check all that apply): See http://epltt.coe.uga.edu/index.php?title=Bloom%27s_Taxonomy Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating Types of questions/prompts (Check all that apply): Multiple choice Multiple Select True/False Yes/No Short open-ended response or fill in the blank Longer open-ended response Provide samples of questions/prompts to be given to students: Which is the coldest biome?, Which biome helps regulate weather patterns?, Which biome is dominated by grasses?, Which biome contains the Sahara?, Which is NOT an example of freshwater biomes?, Where can estuaries be found?, Which biome is the biggest in the world?, Which is the largest terrestrial biome in the world? Right/Wrong Answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions? Yes No Mixed (Some will have correct answers, others will not.) Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some or all of the questions and display correct response to the class after the SRS activity? Yes No Why or why not? That is the format of the Kahoot activity. Use of data: What data will be collected as a result of this activity? How will it be used and by whom? (For example: Will information collected from this activity be used to award a grade? Will the individual information collected be shared with students and/or parents to help them monitor individual progress? Will you discuss the aggregate, anonymous data with the whole class to help them learn? Will you use data to differentiate instruction for students, if so describe how.) The overall scores of the students as a whole will be collected. Any questions that many students miss will be noted. This will help the teacher know what material needs to be reviewed. Students will individually know the scores of each of their questions and they can make note of the ones they missed so they will know what to go back and review. There will be no grade given for this activity. It is more of a personal assessment to know what material was learned and what material needs to be reviewed based on the progress of the previous lesson. Describe what will occur after the SRS activity: After the SRS activity we will review as a class the questions that the majority of students missed. We will review the characteristics of all of the biomes to see what we missed. Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. (For example: What are you trying that you have not tried before? What do you hope to learn from this activity? How do you hope it will help students learn? You must design something that will help you learn something new. Honor system!) : I have never designed a lesson involving an SRS before. I hope to learn how this activity will help the students learn and track their progress. I also hope to be able to find any flaws in my teaching that led to many students missing the same question. I hope that students are able to track their learning through this activity and identify holes in their knowledge.
