READINESS

I. Goals/Objectives/Standard(s)
A. Goal
Students will be able to compare numbers using symbols like greater than, less than, or equal to.

B. Objective

1. After this activity, students will be able to identify which numbers are larger by

observing the weight and quantity of objects.

2. After completing the lesson, students will be able to compare two numbers and differentiate the
largest of the two.

C. Standard(s):

IAS: 1.NS.4: Use place value understanding to compare two two-digit numbers based on

II. Home Based Study DAY 1

Students will go to the classroom Weebly Page and click on Flipped Classroom. They will watch the
video presented, read the questions with it, and be read to share in class the next day
I will ask the following questions with the video and in class the next day:
- Which number does the alligator want to eat? The bigger or the smaller number?
- Which side does the alligator's mouth face? Towards the bigger or the smaller
number?
- Is 3 cheeseburgers bigger than 1 cheeseburger?

III.In-Class Lesson Study DAY 2

Anticipatory Set
Students sit on circle carpet and share with one another what their favorite part of the
video was
Teacher has students share with each other what they learned from the video
Teacher has student sit in a circle with an inflatable ball. She will toss the ball to one of
the students and they will share a favorite part or something they learned. After sharing,
the student will pass the ball to another student.
The teacher allows this time for the students to simply talk about the video as well as
ask any questions they may have.

IV.Purpose:
Students we are going to learn about numbers and how to know which is bigger than the other one.
We are going to learn this because you will use the skill of comparing two things millions of times
throughout your life.

V. Lesson Presentation (Input/Output) (40 minutes)

Instruction

1
Teacher will demonstrate the concept of more and less with Legos.
She will start by having one side with a higher number stacked up and the other side she will have a
lower number stacked up. She will explain how the taller stack has MORE Legos than the shorter
stack.
Teacher will also demonstrate using Legos and a scale. The more legos there are, the heavier it is and
will outweigh the lighter number.
o Teacher demonstrates multiple ways of thinking so that students fully grasp the concept of
more and less
o The teacher will ask questions throughout the lesson and allow time for questions and re-
teaching

Activity:
(Guided Practice)
Students will receive an alligator paper (like in video) along with hersheys kisses
Teacher will explain how the alligator wants to eat whichever side has more kisses
The students will be instructed to put the number of kisses on each side that the teacher tells them to
They will be instructed to face the alligator to the side that has more kisses
The teacher will ask why the alligator wants to eat the bigger side. (because there are MORE on the
BIGGER side).
The students will then receive a marker board and marker
The teacher will write two numbers on the board and ask the students to do the same.
The students will have to place their alligator in between the numbers facing the bigger number.
The teacher will model first, then have the students do it on their own
If there is confusion or questions, the teacher will reteach the material

VII. Closure/ Conclusion/Review Learning Outcomes

Closure Activity:
Students will stand in a circle. Teacher will throw ball to a student and will have a statement come up
on a powerpoint such as 7 is ____ than 5. Student will fill in the blank with greater than or less than.
The students will continue this activity by throwing the ball to each other and a new question will come
up onto the screen.

PLAN FOR ASSESSMENT

Formative:
Teacher will ask questions and listen for responses
Teacher will make note of any student that shows they did not watch the video ahead of time as well as
if there are any students who might need more explaining one-on-one
