ANAND
Chennai, November 21st
Viswanathan Anand started actively and aggressively but lost way after building up a good
th
position in the 9 round of the World Chess Championship at the Hyatt Regency. It was a
fascinating duel where human angle was more prominent as the chess engines were found
wanting.
Needing a win to keep the title which has been in his sole possession since 2007, Anand
piled on pressure on the young Challenger, Magnus Carlsen but the Norwegian maintained
th
his cool and pocketed a point after Anand blundered on the 28 turn.
"The position was extremely imbalanced. Fear of being mated was there," said Carlsen
speaking after the game in a crowded press conference.
Anand later admitted that playing all out for victory was paramount, "There was not much of
choice. I needed to change the course of the match drastically,"
After nine games Carlsen leads the 12 game Match 6-3 and just needs a draw to win the title.
For Anand though there is a mathematical possibility of scoring 3/3, it is difficult to execute it
on the chessboard.
For the record, the last time a player won three games in a row in a world championship was
Anand in 2000 against Alexei ShirovAnatoly.
th
Anand will play with the Black pieces in the 10 game tomorrow.
As expected, Anand surprised by opening with the Queen Pawn for the first time in this Match
and Carlsen responded with the Nimzo-Indian. Anand adopted a sharp set up by playing the
Sammisch variation .
The game then on was razor sharp with the NIIT MindChampion Anand building up a King-
side attack and Carlsen operating on the queen side. The Writing then was clear on the wall
that either Anand would succeed in checkmate or Carlsen would crash through with his
pawns on the queen side to win.
The elite chess world following the game at this point were tilted in Anands favour. Anand
couldnt have imagined getting as good a position as this today said GM Peter Svidler after
th
the 18 move.
Also for the first time in the Match Anand was playing rapidly and Carlsen had fallen back on
rd
the clock. Anand took a long think on the 23 move before swinging his Queen onto the
Kingside.
Carlsen calculated accurately and always had a counter- plan ready. Anand in his quest to
th
inflict a check-mate made a wrong knight move on the 28 turn and resigned immediately
after Carlsens move as he was losing a rook.
