Lesson: Narrative and Identity

Narrating My Experiences in the World

Quick Overview of Lesson

Students will explore the connections between factors that make us who we are and how they
influence the way we react to experiences in our lives. They will then present their thinking
through a digital story.

Why Do Students Care About This Lesson?

Students care about events in their own lives, and many students enjoy telling stories about
themselves. For those students who might have a challenge thinking of stories, they may use
one of the suggestions.

Part 1

Essential Question/s:

How does my identity impact my experiences in the world?

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objectives DOK level

To connect factors that shape our identity and our experiences in 4 Extended Thinking

Part 2

Materials:

Chromebooks, access to the internet, Google Classroom with resources previously collected,
blank storyboard, access to Voice Thread, Adobe Sparks, and/or Storybird

Anticipatory Set:
We begin the lesson with a discussion of a book we read together in a previous lesson. We
briefly make connections between who the main character was and how her identity
influenced her reactions to what happened around her.

Teaching Steps:
Task/Step DOK level

Students pair up and recall various factors that made Irena Sendler who she 1
was (gender, nationality, job, etc), and the events that transpired in the book
we read together.

Student pairs interpret and infer how who Irena was influenced the 2
experiences she had, both from the point of view of her reactions and how
others reacted to her.

Student pairs draw conclusions about the connection between identity and 3
how we experience the world based on their discussions, then share them
with the class. They also cite evidence from the text and other media weve
looked at.

Students will watch a brief model of a narrative that connects the events and 1
the identity factors of the 2st person narrator.

Based on the model, students will brainstorm individually 3 factors they feel 4
are important in explaining who they are. They will then apply the concepts
and connections they discussed previously to create a storyboard for their
own narrative.

Students will create a digital story/narrative of the connections between their 4

identity and how they interact with the world, demonstrating the concepts we
learned today

Closure:
We will share the digital stories with the class in Google Classroom and watch our partners
video. After, we will debrief and discuss some of the connections our partners made in their
videos.

SAMR Model
For the tech being used in this lesson, describe the task use and classify
to the level of the SAMR model.

Substitution

Augmentation

Modification Students will present their own narrative through a digital storytelling tool,
including visuals and audio.

Redefinition Teacher has access to all student research and notes on Google
Classroom.

DOK Levels
You may only address ONE DOK level in this lesson or
up to all 4. Describe how your lesson addresses the DOK
level.

DOK 1: Memorize/Follow steps Students will recall information from the book at first, and
they will also follow some steps as far as the
specifications of the assignment

DOK 2: Think Students have to summarize, interpret, infer, and relate

information during their partner discussion about Irena
Sendler and her identity and experiences.

DOK 3: Critically think Student will have to draw conclusions about the
connection between identity and how we experience the
world and cite evidence that supports those conclusions.

DOK 4: Original thinking Students will apply the concepts and connections they
discussed previously to create a storyboard for their own
narrative.

Assessment:
Formative assessment

Digital story/ narrative of a personal experience connected to who they are

Summative assessment

Summative assessment will come later at the end of the unit
