DLTK also has a girl and boy going to church that could be
used as a craft for growing like Jesus.

Intro: Use mirroring and gestures:

Today, we will learn about Jesus growing up.

The Bible is divided into how many main parts? 2

What are they? Old Testament & New Testament
How many books are in the Old Testament? 39
How many books are in the New Testament? 27
How many books altogether? 66
What was the last thing we learned about before the
Christmas break? The birth of Jesus
Where do we find the story about the birth of Jesus? New
Testament
What are the first four books in the New Testament called?
Gospels
Name the first four books: Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John
What does the word gospel mean? Good News

Do: In class, open the Bible to Matthew 13:55 and say: Here's
where the Bible tells about Jesus. Where was baby Jesus
born? Did He stay a baby? Jesus grew to be a boy. He was a
boy in a family. Read what the people said about Jesus in
Matthew 13:5356. Jesus had brothers and sisters. Ask the
children to raise their hands if they have brothers and sisters.
Jesus' daddy was a carpenter. He built things. What job
does your dad and/or mom do? Jesus was once a little boy.
He grew up like we do.
Bring in an item that is hand-made from wood. (my dads
peg coat rack)
Tell how it is hand-made. Talk about how Jesus made things
out of wood.

Now ask the children to follow you as you sing the following song
to the tune of Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush
This is the way that Jesus grew, (squat and slowly rise)
Jesus grew,Jesus grew,
This is the way that Jesus grew,
And I am growing, too.
This is the way that Jesus walked. . . (walk around the room)
And I am walking, too.
This is the way that Jesus prayed. . . (fold hands and bow
head) And I am praying, too.
Note: You can add different things that Jesus did for kids
to imitate for a movement song.
Discuss: Ask, When you grow, do your knuckles grow too?
(Hold your own hand in a fist so they can compare the size of
their knuckles to the size of yours.) How can you tell you are
growing? Who made your body so it will grow? Was Jesus
ever your size? What was Jesus' family like when he was a
little boy? Jesus was once a little boy. He grew up like we
do.
Im Growing (to the tune of Its Raining, Its Pouring

Im growing, Im growing, (twirl in a circle)

And Gods love is showing. (twirl in a circle)
I once was small,But now Im tall, (squat)(pop up)
Just look at how Im growing. (stretch up high)

2. Introduce scripture Luke 2:52 by showing words & help

to memorize it/explain what it means.

K And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and

in favour with God and man. (December Sharing Time
Ideas by Jill has a visual with this scripture)
K Have the children do simple actions with you as you
read the scripture and explain what it means.
I. wisdom (point to head)
II. stature (flex muscles)
III. in favor with God (fold hands and put to side of head and
tilt head)
IV. in favor with man (wave to a friend).
3. Object Lesson:

Have a child is good at math come up to the front of the

room and give them math facts to answer, starting with
counting, then addition, then subtraction, then
multiplication, then division. Start out easy, then get to
where its hard and they cant answer the questions
anymore. Teach that we learn little by little and grow a
little at a time. This is how Jesus grew, too. He didnt
just know everything when he was little. He had to learn
things a little at a time until now he knows all things.

4. Activity:

Have pictures to go with the following bulleted items and

put pictures in corresponding bags (December Sharing
Time by Jill and google). {Click here to open file}
Wisdom

K listening to teachers
K listening to parents
K scriptures
K reading good books
K school work
Stature

K Fruits/Vegetables
K Grains
K Water
K Exercise (playing outside)
K Work
Favor with God

K Pray
K Go to church/synagogue
K Keep the commandments
K Going/preparing to go to church
K Bearing your testimony/sharing the gospel (picture
of Jesus in the synagogue)
Favor with man

K Service/helping others
K Being friendly/smiling
K Inviting someone to play
Have the children take turns pulling pictures out of the
bags to see how Jesus grew in all of these areas. Then
have them put the picture on the ruler, starting from the
bottom.

At the end of the activity, ask if anyone in the room has

ever done any of the things Jesus did to grow in wisdom,
stature, favor with God, or with man? Have them share
what they did.

Put a picture of the Primary girl and boy at the top of

the ruler next to the Savior and say that just as the
Savior did these things to grow, we can do the same
things to grow and be like him. The Savior was our
perfect example of what we should do and be like. Just
as the Savior grew little by little, we can, too. We have
the potential to become like the Savior if we follow His
example.

Here are some wondering questions you might

ask:
1. I wonder what your favorite part of this
story is.
2. I wonder what the Jewish teachers thought
about Jesus, as he listened to them and asked
questions.
3. I wonder how Mary and Joseph felt when
they realized that they didn't know where
Jesus was.
4. I wonder what Mary and Joseph felt when
they found Jesus.
5. I wonder what Mary and Joseph thought
when he said, "Didn't you know that I had to
be in my father's house?"
6. I wonder what the temple leaders thought
when they heard Jesus say that.
7. I wonder what questions Mary had about all
of this after they were back home again.

K Why did Jesus parents go to Jerusalem every

year? For the Festival of the Passover
K How old was Jesus in this story? 12
K After the festival, Jesus stayed behind in
Jerusalem. How long did his parents travel on the way
home before they noticed that he wasnt with them?
One day
K Why were they not aware that he wasnt with
them? They were traveling in a group with family and
friends and they thought he was with other people in the
group.
K When they couldnt find him among friends and
family what did they do? They went back to Jerusalem to
look for him.
K How long did it take to find him? 3 days.
K Where did they find him? At the temple.
K What was he doing? Sitting with the teachers, asking
questions.
K What did the teachers think of Jesus? They were
amazed at his understanding.
K What did his parents say when they found Him?
Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I
have been anxiously searching for you.
K How did He answer them? Why were you searching
for me? he asked. Didnt you know I had to be in my
Fathers house?
K What do you think he meant by that? That the
temple should have been the first place they should have
looked for him because this was the house of God, his
Father, and he was doing what God wanted him to do.
K If you were lost, where would the most logical
place be for anyone to find you, and what would you
be doing? Would it be a place that God would like you
to be and something that he would like you to be
doing?
K Did Jesus stay there at the temple after that? No.
He obeyed them and went back to Nazareth with them.
K What was Marys reaction? She treasured these
things in her heart.
K What ways did Jesus grow up? physically, mentally,
spiritually and socially
K How do we grow physically? We eat food and we
exercise our muscles
K How do we grow mentally? We go to school and
study books to learn things
K How do we grow socially? We get together with
friends and play with them and share with them etc.
K How do we grow spiritually? By going to church,
reading the Bible, praying
K Are you growing spiritually?
K Lets pray and ask Jesus to help us to obey our
parents and to grow physically, mentally, socially and
spiritually
