CADING

Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of computer systems to aid in the creation,
modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. CAD software is used to increase the
productivity of the designer, improve the quality of design, improve communications
through documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing. CAD-ing is an
event organized by IMechE for the purpose of bring out you inner designer, improve the
CAD-er in you as well as give you an opportunity in the field of design.

INCENTIVE:
Thinking whats in it for you?
Platform to improve your skills
Challenge the competitors in the market
Publicise your talent
Pocket the prize money

RULES:
Participants must register individually, not in teams.
All teams must report within 20 minutes of the registration time on the event day.
Participants are allowed to bring their own laptops to use their preferred software.
All participants must ensure that they continually save their work on the computers.
In case of a system failure, no compensation will be offered.
If due to a computer failure a participant loses more than 4 minutes of time, they will
be given an equal amount of time at the end of the round.
Participants are not allowed to access the internet.
Judging criteria will be the same for all softwares.

TIMELINE:
Following is the event plan to be observed:

0900 1000: Registrations will take place during this slot. All participants will report to
NUST-PNEC and then briefed about the competition and details for Round 1.

1000 1045: Round 1 will commence during this time slot. In this round, the
participants will be asked to model a working mechanism. They will be given 45
minutes to complete this task. The participants will be marked out of 20 for this task
(criteria explained later).

1045 1115: The models will be collected and submitted to judges for judging.
Briefing for round 2 will be done.
1115 1245: Round 2 will be held during this time period. In this round, the
participants will be tasked to model another, slightly more difficult
mechanism/object. They will be briefed about this in the half an hour between
Rounds 1 and 2. They will be given 1.5 hours for this task and marked out of 30/40.

1245 1345: Break time - The participants will be given lunch during this time while
the technical team/judges completes the evaluation of the 2nd round.

1345 1415: Briefing for round 3 will be done.

1415 1615: Round 3 - The participants will have to make a working assembly of a
complex mechanism. They will be given 2 hours to complete this final task and at
the end, marked out of 30/40 and the three winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) decided.

1615 1700: Closing Ceremony - The winners will be announced. They will receive
prize money/certificates and the guests will also be given shields. The event will be
brought to an end.

MARKING SCHEME:
Prepare accordingly CAD warriors!

Accuracy: (35% weightage): For Rounds 1 and 2, the models must resemble the
actual parts. Any small details that further make the model more realistic will be
awarded, and simplistic designs will be penalized. For Round 3, the parts modelled
will also be judged using the same rules.
Working Mechanism: (40% weightage): All the parts to be modelled/assembled in all
rounds involve some mechanism. The participants will be evaluated on how
well/properly/smoothly these mechanisms run and whether they are needlessly
complicated or recklessly simplistic. Those that make the mechanisms work
efficiently will be awarded more marks.
Rendering: (5% weightage): Some marks will be reserved for those participants that
make high-quality animations/videos of their mechanisms in action. The better the
quality, the more the marks.
Number of Commands Used: (15% weightage): The parts modelled will be judged
for the efficiency and appropriateness of the method used. The model trees will be
assessed and participants that succeed in modelling parts with fewer
commands/features will be awarded more marks as compared to those that use
too many commands.
Parametric Modelling: (5% weightage): When modelling parts/making sketches,
certain parameters are most of the times related in some way to some other
parameter in the same part or some other part. So that when you change one, the
other changes automatically, removing the need to re-edit those parameters or
parts when a change is made somewhere else. The participants that employ this
technique in modelling their parts will be awarded these marks
