Lesson Summary
In this lesson, students will be introduced to the terms of past, present, and future. The past is
something that has already happened, the present is happening now and the future is what will
happen. They will understand these terms enough to be able to decide if a certain event happened
in the past, is happening in the present, or will happen in the future. Students will use their own
photos, plus some provided to them to understand how their lives, school events, and community
have changed, and will change over time. This will be taught using instructional lecture, class
discussions, collaborative group work, writing assignments, worksheets, a smartboard activity,
and a final timeline project.

Students should know verb tense used for past, present, and future.
Instructional Procedures
Begin the lesson asking students to look at their baby photos, and others. Ask them how they
have changed look wise/physically since that photo was taken. Inform the students that stuff
changes over time. Discuss with the students that our looks change as we get older. After that,
ask them what else changes over time besides how we look. Encourage ideas such as learning to
drive, graduating from high school, and going to college.
Explain to the students that the past is something that has already happened, the present is
happening now and the future is what will happen. Start a discussion with the students about
what some things that they did earlier today were(past), what they are currently doing(present),
and what they will do later today(future). Remind the students of correct verb tense for talking
about past, present, and future. ex. I did, I am, I will
In groups, have the students discuss with each other how they think families, school, and
everyday life tasks change over time. Have each student write down a list of two ways families
change, two things that they think may have changed from schools in the past or will be different
in schools in the future, and two daily activities that have changed over time. After all groups have
gotten some ideas, ask for volunteers to read what they wrote.
Pass out the first then and now worksheet to each student. Fill out this worksheet as a class by
discussing what he do now in place of each activity in the then column. Have each student draw
their own picture to help them remember.
Pull up the smartboard activity, and explain the rules of each game as you progress through the
slides. Make sure that each students gets a chance to come up at least once to participate. Be
sure to discuss with the class the reasoning for why they chose a specific answer during the
activities.
Explain to the students how to enter into the polleverywhere.com poll. Instruct each student to
individually answer each question. Once all students have answered the questions, discuss the
answers as a class, and why they are the correct/incorrect choice.
After the smartboard activity is complete and all students are back in their seats, introduce the
next activity. This will be the My Past, Present, and Future book. Pass out one book to each
student, and tell them the instructions. Have them work on this individually. Once the students are
finished collect the books. Tell the students that in the next class they are going to be making
their own personal timeline. They will use their baby photo they brought in, and drawings to
illustrate the timeline. Pass out the Then and Now #2 worksheet and the 6 Events Sheet. Tell
the students these two worksheets are their homework for the night. They are to write a list of 6
important/exciting events that have happened in their lives. One of these must be their birthday.
Let the students know that they will be using this list to make their timeline. Give them a few
ideas that they could include such as the birth of a sibling, or a family vacation. They are to
complete the Then and Now #2 worksheet just as we did in class together for the first one.
Students who may finish their work early and have it accurate, will
Gifted/Talented Student be able to add on to their timeline by adding more events.
