Critique of Research-based practice in Multicultural Education

Elements Information
Identifying Information
This article covering the Multicultural Education research-based
topic Dealing with Classroom Management Problems is by Saul
Axelrod from the John Hopkins School of Education-The Scope
of Multicultural Education. The purpose of this study is to explore
how Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and positive
reinforcement can help teachers successfully manage their
classrooms.
Professionalism The author understands the importance of integrity, honesty,
personal responsibility, and professional conduct. The author also
explains the root causes of the problems and informs the audience
that ABA has been around for the past 50 years, however, it may
not always be utilized in the classroom. Teachers obsess over
student behavior, become disgruntled, or even lead due to a lack
of classroom management.
Reflective Practice This research problem is extremely significant because without
proper classroom management, the authentic goal cannot be
accomplished throughout a school day, which is for teachers to
teach and students to learn. The contribution that this research-
based practice makes toward the advancement of knowledge and
practice is to permeate research-based practices into the
classroom and actually utilize the effective practices. These
practices and basic principles were outlined by a famed
psychologist many years ago by the name of B.F. Skinner. This
source offers sufficient details including known facts about ABA,
examples, pointers and other thorough insight on the research-

based strategy. The information is formatted in a logical manner.
Being as though this is the authors research, some of the writing
is subjective; however, the research does include objective
research as well.
Knowledge and Methods This is a feasible topic to cover for multicultural education
because every educator across the world has behavior challenges
within their classrooms. One of the number one issues is how to
solve behavior management problems. This research based
practice may fill in the gaps to other studies and allow
professionals to pilot the program or utilize it. If educators from
different parts of the world collaborated and ran control groups on
specific class sizes, grade levels, or age groups, data could easily
be gathered and analyzed to add more insight to the field of
education and classroom management problems.
Some pointers and methods to use with ABA are as follows:
reasonable goals, adjustments in your procedures, talk to other
teachers, read ABA teacher oriented books, used inexpensive easy
interventions, prioritize and start off by only working with about
two behaviors, and be optimistic.
Relationships and Communication Skills The author makes it clear that in order for ABA to work properly,
the teacher must first establish a positive relationship with the
students. Students like being in a positive environment. Students
like being rewarded and they like being in a classroom that offer
incentives and positive reinforcements. Teachers like teaching in a
positive environment as well because their results and success
rates are rewarding.
Individual and Cultural Diversity This particular research based strategy could be utilized across the
globe in all different cultures, individually and collectively,
although, certain countries are more strict than others in regards
to discipline in schools.

Elements Information
Ethical Legal Standards and Policy All too often ABA is used in special education classes and rarely
in regular education classes. If more schools would implement
this into a discipline policy and classroom behavior system,
teachers would have a lot less behavior challenges and the
teachers themselves would be a lot happier. Some schools may
have designated behavior and classroom management systems in
place, but are most often at the discretion of the teacher as to what
is actually done in the classroom.
