What now?
I have gained a valuable vision about sensors in our future life

I have realized that sensor technologies are established and

becoming more invasive for controlling everyday life.

Sensors turn into spimes (sensors + GPS/time + network + memory)

Sensor technologists develop sensor networks that track specific

parameters, but nobody really knows how to handle these data. For
sure, not how to handle them altogether and efficiently.

Spimes are not just rough data, they are information - and they
can build themselves information and relationships.

Spimes sync data to their cloud, not the cloud.

Future developments in mobile devices, microprocessors and wireless

will enable each unit, even small and simple, to be active and not
just passive -> “following” other spimes and managing events.

Goal
Pain: we need a sensor atmosphere, which raises
over the single cloud and connects internet of
things spimes/clouds

Information, even anonymous, from one sensor

has significant value outside its cloud

Value proposition: build the abstract layer that

reads updates from all sensors, all types of data,
all hosts and shares them with the outside
(search) and with the inside (follow) - as Twitter

Monday, July 12, 2010

The project tasks

➊ Build the upper cloud

➋ Create a metadata

➌ Define input
➍ Define output
➎ Build search ➏ Build follow
➐ Develop tags

Issues

Protocols: design through protocols that will

be then reused by developers

Privacy: how can sensors remain anonymous

and hidden to users?

Separating users and sensors as much as

possible

Log-in/initialization: how?

Why open source?
Community: it reaches the whole community of
developers from the start

It enables developers to start working straight

on the upper level

Fast: it moves faster than proprietary software,

giving up dead ends quickly

Flexibility: software goes dynamic

Business model: open source does not mean no

Competitive scenario
Patchube - UK startup providing sensor
store and datastream platform

Funambol Teleport - Mobile open source

cloud sync. Platform for syncing custom
data on the Funambol cloud

Widetag - Developer of spimes, spimes

interfaces and tag-cloud interaction

WikiCity - MIT experiment for Urban

sensorization

Beachheads
Start from existing spimes:

Smartphones (spimes, apps marketplace,

urban interaction, Twitter)

Smart intrusion/burglar alarms (immediate

creation of value)

Mobile + profiled + localized advertising

My plans
I have spotted the opportunity of the next
big thing (but is it?)

Relocate to somewhere I can learn fast, set

up a team and go for this project

Raise funds and bootstrap

Iterate on the project

Have fun building cool projects

Deadlines in Aug/Sept for some funds
