Cause and Effect Lesson Plan

by
Sara Jackson

1. Learning Outcomes:
During this lesson, students will be introduced to the concept of cause and
effect. The teacher and the students will apply the concept of cause and
effect through an anchor chart, worksheet, and kahoot! quiz game.

2. Common Core Standards:

Standard - CC.1.2.4.E: Use text structure to interpret information (e.g.,
chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/ solution).

Standard - CC.1.2.4.G: Interpret various presentations of information

within a text or digital source and explain how the information contributes to
an understanding of text in which it appears.

3. Lesson Objectives:
1. Students will be able to accurately complete a worksheet on cause and
effect.

2. Students will be able to a play a kahoot! quiz game on cause and effect
with a score of 80% or higher.

4. Anticipatory Set:
The teacher will have the students watch the video Ornie the Pig
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUm-
vAOmV1o&index=1&list=PLjF0WP3r9ky5w9LBLV_Hlo3mXObLDvLCR) . After
the video is played the teacher will ask the students why they think they
watched that video. The teacher will have a short discussion with the
students about the possible topic.

5. Procedures:
1. The teacher will explain to the students that they are going to learn
about cause and effect.
2. The teacher will display the anchor chart on cause and effect for the
students. The teacher will explain that a cause is the reason why
something happens, and an effect is the result of what happened.
3. The teacher will play the video from the anticipatory set, but this time
he/she will have the students think or write down different cause and
effect relationships they see.
4. The teacher will have the students share what cause and effects they
have found, and he/she will write the students answers on the board.
5. The teacher will hand out a worksheet on cause and effect where they
are given a scenario and the students have to identify the cause and
effect.
6. After the students are finished, they will go over their answers with the
teacher, and then put their worksheets in their folders.

6. Differentiated Instruction:
For students who need more support: The teacher will have the
students who need more support discuss why the cause and effect
relationships on the worksheet make sense. The teacher will also provide the
students with a personal anchor chart so that they can refer to it if they need
help identifying cause and effect relationships.

For students who are more advanced: The teacher will have the
students create their own cause and effect scenario. The student will write
down their scenario, and then write down the cause and effect within the
scenario.

7. Closure:
For the closure, the teacher will give each student an iPad to play a kahoot!
game. The kahoot! game will give a cause, and then the students will have
to choose the correct effect.

8. Assessment (Formative and Summative):

Formative Assessment: For formative assessment, the teacher will be
observing the students answers in the worksheet. The teacher will be
looking to see that the students recorded causes and effects that make
sense. The teacher will mark down if any students are struggling with the
worksheet to provide more support.

Summative Assessment: For summative assessment, the teacher will

review the kahoot! game statistics after the game to note who is
understanding the topic and who needs more practice. The teacher will
record the scores of the kahoot! on the students running records.

9. Materials/Equipment:

10. Technology:
Technology utilized in the anticipatory set through the Ornie the Pig video.
The students are also utilizing technology through the kahoot! quiz on the
iPads.

11. Reflection on Planning:

This lesson utilizes technology to help students understand what cause and
effect relationships are. Through the video, the students will be entertained
by a short story, while also viewing cause and effect relationships that they
will later identify in the lesson. The lesson also utilizes technology through a
fun interactive quiz called a kahoot!. The kahoot! quiz is created by the
teacher, and can be tailored to their students educational level.

To work on the students writing, I wanted to utilize a worksheet where the

students had to write out cause and effect relationships. The students in my
classroom are stronger readers than they are writers, so any time we
practice writing it will be beneficial for their learning.

Lastly, I wanted to have the students re-introduced to the video from the
anticipatory set so that they can play on past information, even if they just
viewed the video at the beginning of the lesson. I want students to be
making connections throughout my lessons, so that they can further
understand the concept and see that cause and effect relationships are
everywhere.

12. Reflection on Instruction (once the lesson has been taught):

Utilizing technology in this lesson really helped to engage the students in
learning about cause and effect relationships. They enjoyed the kahoot!
game so much they wanted to play it again. The students in this class are
very competitive so I needed to closely monitor personal feelings throughout
the game so nobody felt sad because they had less points than another
student. If I made a kahoot! game again to use with the students, I would
make more questions or two versions of the game so that the students can
get more practice.

If I was to teach this lesson again, I would show the video and point out the
cause and effect relationships within the video. Because I was rushed for
time, I did not get to show the video I wanted to show during the anticipatory
set.

The worksheet on cause and effect relationships was helpful to have

students identify cause and effect relationships as well as work on their
writing. However, I think that if I was to teach this lesson again, I would have
the students create their own cause and effect relationships and write them
down. This could even be used as a review or expansion activity on the topic.
The worksheet I used help the students write, but it did not help them
practice spelling because they were just copying the pre-existing sentences
on the page.

Overall, I thought this lesson went well. The students seemed to really grasp
the concept of cause and effect relationships, as well as had a fun time
playing the kahoot! game.
