W elcome! It is our pleasure to have you attend the 8th annual K-12 Information Tech-
nology Conference: Brainstorm 8.0. The purpose of this conference is for K-12 school dis-
trict Directors of Information and Technology to network with their counterparts. We offer pre-
conference hands-on workshops to allow you to see and work hands-on with new technology!
As you know, bringing new technology into your district (no matter the size) is a primary func-
tion of Directors of Information and Technology. Our conference allows you to consult with other
school districts about how to avoid some of the unnecessary pitfalls of many new technology pro-
jects. This is not the only benefit of our conference. We bring leading industry technology vendors
to help craft a solution that will best suit your districts needs.
We encourage you to participate in the sessions and presentations, and to take advantage of the
networking opportunities offered at Brainstorm. We ask that you complete the conference evalua-
tions/suggestions that will be emailed, as this allows us to continue bringing you the best K-12 tech-
nology conference in the MidWest. Enjoy your conference experience!
Brainstorm Steering Committee

General Information
Registration
The Registration area is your conference headquarters. It has conference handouts, schedule
changes/updates as well as a lost and found area. The area is open during the regular conference
times. This is generally from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. If you have any questions, comments or concerns
this would be the place to let us know.

Keynote Address
What Ethernet Speeds are coming, can they carry Power and will they be Wireless?
by Don Doberstein, RCDD

After forty years, Moores Law is still alive and well and thats about all that has remained
the same within computing and network technology! Unfortunately the simple principle stated by
Gordon Moore in 1965 (that processing power doubles as the cost is cut in half every 18 months) has
made us all a slave to continually looking into our crystal ball, trying to predict what choices will carry
us farthest into the future at the least expense. This Keynote presentation will help to explain what is
Real and available today, what will probably be coming in the not-too-distant future and how best we
can equip ourselves and our facilities to face the inevitable challenges that technology will throw our
direction.

Don will also conduct a breakout session, during which you may ask questions or discuss any
issues that are on your mind as a result of the keynote presentation.

Breakout Session #2 Monday 2:45-4:00pm

WAN Acceleration M2-215
by Deborah Stapel Marketing Coordinator, Tushaus Computer Services
Co-presenter(s): Riverbed Aloeswood

WAN acceleration is about accelerating low bandwidth connections to outlying locations. By accelerating these connections the district can keep costs down and improve student/
staff satisfaction. For example, schools connected to the campus via T-1 are limited in their ability to utilize services that require high bandwidth connections (i.e. file storage,
databases, and client/ server applications). This situation typically requires the IT staff to deploy local servers at the remote site to improve student/ staff productivity but at an
added hardware and management expense. When put into production, WAN acceleration products have demonstrated their ability to increase throughput by up to 100 times, provide
compression ratios of up to 100:1, and cut bandwidth utilization by up to 95%. IT administrators have been able to deliver LAN-like performance over T-1 circuits, defer WAN up-
grades, centralize infrastructure without degrading performance, and cut IT maintenance costs. Riverbed will provide a technical discussion on how their WAN acceleration product
works and how to deploy it in various scenarios & environments. Riverbed will also provide demonstration equipment and testing/ simulation tools to give attendees a first-hand look
at how their technology works in practice.

Breakout Session #3 Tuesday 8:00-9:15am

Wireless Authentication and Security T3-222
by Spencer Thomason President, Delta Communications, Inc.
Co-presenter(s): Dale Oledenkamp of BlueSocket Aloeswood

For an increasing number of schools, colleges and universities worldwide, wireless LANs provide a way to offer a wider range of academic and collaborative services to both students
and faculty across different campus environments. Educators face a number of unique challenges, however, in developing and deploying wireless networks to a highly diverse commu-
nity of users. One of the most important concerns is security, especially if a wireless network is used to extend wired resources. Wireless systems should employ reliable authentication
and policy-based user access safeguards, as well as tools that protect a network against viruses and other types of malicious code that may slip into a network through a students
notebook computer or mobile device. These devices cant be physically controlled or locked down, so it is vital that systems be in place to filter out any harmful programming or
attachments and provide a real-time audit of network activities. Having the ability to monitor and control bandwidth use within the network is also key to minimizing illegal downloads
and file sharing among students, and protecting an institution against possible violations. Above all, however, a school wireless network should provide the right balance between
strong and reliable security safeguards, flexible management controls, and a welcoming user interface that offer a learning gateway to both faculty and students

Turn your Wiring Closet into a High Quality Infrastructure Space T3-220
by Al Warner Senior Staff Engineer, American Power Conversion
Co-presenter(s): Suite 4

The wiring closet used to be a space to house switching and telecommunications equipment along with buckets, brooms, and mops. Often these spaces
started life as storage or janitor's closets and they tend to be small and odd shaped. But now, they house increasingly critical equipment for your data center
and extended network operation. These rooms were not designed with the power, cooling and security they warrant in their new role. Many different people
can have access and any cooling is an afterthought. Equipment critical to your VoIP, wireless LAN, RFID, and WAN connections might be plugged into circuit
meant for light bulbs. During this presentation we'll walk you through your wiring closet and help you understand what you can do economically and effi-
ciently to make it a valuable part of your infrastructure. You'll be able to ask questions and get prompt replies.

they need to make more informed decisions and get the job done. With SharePoint Services you can:
Deploy websites for individual classrooms or learning communities where students, teachers, parents, and administrators can share documents and publicize important events, re-
sources, and tasks. Facilitate effective collaboration by providing document control capabilities such as document check-in/check-out and version control. Allow student access to
documents stored on a SharePoint site, determine the online status of other class members, and communicate easily with class members from the Shared TaskPane of the desktop
tools they use everyday. Keep students, teachers, and parents on top of changes to documents and to other site content through Alerts. Audience-targeting features enable class
updates, school news, and important files to be pushed to groups of students, teachers, or other users based on the role assigned to that user. Provide creative forums for brainstorm-
ing ideas, building knowledge bases, or simply gathering information in an easy-to-edit format with new templates for implementing blogs (also known as weblogs) and wikis (Web sites
that can be quickly edited by team membersno special technical knowledge required).

Getting Teachers To Moodle T6-241

by Leo C. Ureel II Administrator, REMC #1
Co-presenter(s): Aralia

With the rise of distance learning and web-based curriculum, our students are now well positioned to experience significant online learning before graduating from high school. The
Pew Internet and American Life Project indicate 87% of 12-17 year olds are regularly online, most of them daily. At REMC #1, we are encouraging teachers to integrate online learning
into their curriculum via Moodle. Moodle is a Course Management System (CMS) designed to to help educators create effective online learning communities. REMC #1 provides technol-
ogy training and support to schools in the western upper penninsula of Michigan. We believe teachers are empowered to create high quality engaging instructional environments when
they have access to the necessary skills, tools and rich sources of information. We currently have 67 courses on our Moodle site, of which, 12 received heavy usage in 5 districts during
December 2006. Getting teachers to Moodle requires 1. an initial endowment of online curricular content as a resource for teachers to draw upon as they learn to build online courses,
2. data entry support as they move paper-based materials to the online environment, 3. technical support once they are up and running, and 4. community development and encour-
agement. This presentation describes the steps we are taking to get teachers to use Moodle, ideas for teacher training, and methods for additional classroom integration.
