CHAMPION/DATA/ROUND 11
BRIS
Hi and welcome to the 11th H&A edition of the Fantasy Freako's rave for 2013.
There was some mixed results last round as we entered the first of the three byes, but the common
theme was one of excitement, as the two Tom's turned it on, with Mitchell and Nicholls racking up
CARL
huge scores. In this week's focus I will highlight which players to look out for as trade up targets, as
well as discuss the latest NAB AFL Rising Star nominee - Tom Mitchell.
Enjoy this week's read and best of luck for the coming round and beyond.
COLL
TR ADE UP TARGETS
ESS
With the first of three byes out of the way, this is the week to upgrade to players from the six clubs that had the
week off, which makes players from Brisbane, Fremantle, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide, Richmond and Western Bulldogs
valuable commodities. When looking to upgrade you go straight to the top, with 19 players from the above-mentioned
clubs rating elite in their position for points scored, as highlighted by the below table (Cyril Rioli not included).
FREM
Kane Cornes is the most prolific scorer with an average of 112 points per game, but if you're looking for some value
then you can't go past Trent Cotchin. As the second-lowest priced midfielder (12 in total) in the below table, he
has enormous upside, dropping in value by $127,500 already this season - the fifth-biggest of any midfielder in the
GEEL
league. He has averaged 102 points per match against his next five opponents and is over $31,000 cheaper than team
mate Brett Deledio, having a much lower breakeven than the latter as well.
Personally I'll be all over Michael Barlow, even though he is the most expensive midfielder of the group. He ranks
GCS
equal-seventh in the competition for average points scored with 108, reaching three figures in six of his 10 matches.
With four of his next five games at Patersons Stadium as well, I'm expecting some massive returns. He has scored
126, 90, 122, 100 and a season-high 149 points respectively in his five games at the venue already this season.
GWS
If you're in the market for a defender the only one represented is Garrick Ibbotson. He ranks second at the club
for average points scored behind Barlow, averaging 99 points per game. He has cracked the ton in three of his six
matches which have all been at home, returning 103, 136 and 130 points in that order. He's well worth a punt.
HAW
Of the DPP's there are three to choose from and you can't go wrong whichever way you go, with Jordan Lewis, Tom
Rockliff and Dustin Martin all rating elite for points scored. I have two of that trio and will be making a call on Lewis
later in the week.

THE RISE OF TOM MITCHELL
CARL
Once a magnet, always a magnet I say. From as far back as 2009 it was clear that Tom Mitchell had a
bright football future ahead of him. He averaged more disposals than any other player at the 2009 NAB
AFL Under-16 Championships, averaging 32 per game and he set the tone as early as the first match
against South Australia, racking up 40 disposals. Injury held him back at the 2011 championships,
COLL
managing only two appearances, but we had already seen enough.
After arriving at the Swans as a father-son selection he was managed carefully in his first season, making
eight appearances mid-year before they wrapped him in cotton wool. He showed glimpses of his talent
ESS
along the way, collecting tallies of 35 and 42 disposals, averaging 101 points per game.
In the lead up to his AFL debut in Round 10 Mitchell had two massive games in the NEAFL, collecting 52
FREM
and 56 disposals, racking up an amazing 216 and 226 points in that order. As we all know the standard
of the NEAFL isn't anywhere near that of the AFL, but for a player of Mitchell's quality you find the ball
no matter what.
GEEL
He proved this to be the case last round against Adelaide, finishing with 31 disposals, 10 tackles, one
goal and 144 points - the second-best return of any player in the competition for the round behind team
mate Ryan O'Keefe. He managed this from only 72% game time which was the second-lowest time on
ground of any player from either side that wasn't involved in a sub.
GCS
Admittedly he is only two games into a long AFL career so we can't get too carried away, but in saying
that he has all the makings of an elite AFL midfielder.
GWS
Below is a breakdown of Mitchell's numbers across his career to date which includes his junior, NEAFL
and AFL numbers. It makes for interesting reading, averaging 113 points per match across all levels of
competition.

After scoring 99 points on his Fremantle debut in Round 1, Danyle Pearce

He has been consistent though, exceeding 80 points in all but three of his 10

matches. He's a reliable pick if you can only afford a player in his price range.

Owners of Andrew Swallow would have been disappointed last week
after he could only manage 10 disposals against the Suns - his equal-
lowest return in any game since 2006. Suffering a minor price drop,
COLL
he'll be a prime trade target after he completes his bye this week.
