Throughout the course of UWP 1Y, I honed my skills as a writer. During winter quarter of
UWP1Y we were assigned three independent projects to use and improve which we learned
during our lectures on Friday. You will be able to find these three independent projects on the top
right side of the page labeled as: Wikipedia article, Living Picture Narrative and the Podcast
project. In the following paragraphs you will begin to see where we applied what we learned in
our lectures to our projects that allowed our specific discourse communities to fully grasp our
messages we conveyed to them.
The Living Picture Narrative:
During the writing of the living picture narrative essay, I learn many techniques and
writing ideas that would overall improve my writing for the future. During lecture when we were
introduced to the Living Picture Narrative assignment, I learn that the first step to any writing,
whether you are a beginner or an advance writer, starts with brainstorming a purpose of your
piece of writing. I found myself occasionally questioning, Why am I writing this? To entertain
others? I often start by reading the assign prompt of questions which helps develop a direction
and a point for the essay.
During the writing process of the Living Picture Narrative essay, I noticed I been using
transferable skills that I havent realize I been using consciously. The active used skill would be
the rhetorical knowledge to a specific audience allowing them to understand the specific words
while reading the narrative essay. The passive skill I also have been noticing were frequently
used is the meta-cognition, simply by review what I have written and to think critically why I
have say those words in a specific way. With the specific alignment of the words in the sentence,
I always wonder and question how the audience may have interpret it and ensuring that there is
no other way of misinterpreting the sentence in the paragraph as a whole.
Most of the revision process of this project was to focus on the perspective of my
experience than the fact and information on the given topic. When applying the brain storming
and word choice within the paragraphs, some of the strengths that were gain from this writing
assignment is processes for revising the essay and metacognition where making choices on
which events are relevant to the main message of the essay.
The Wikipedia Entry:
In the beginning of writing the Wikipedia entry, I advanced my skills as a writer by
focusing on the approach of the process first before proceeding to write the draft itself. Along the
way, I learn that I need a background on the subject of my interest to a specific audience in mind.
I learn the ways of finding a credible source that would prove me as a credible writer by citing
each articles. I used pictures and captions and tone to help narrow my audience into a specific
point I wanted to bring to them on the subject. Altogether, I had advanced my writing skills by
allowing my peers to revise my writing to show the strength of my message connecting to my
intended audience.

At the beginning of the writing process. I had conducted a background research on the
topic. Using google and Wikipedia as a way of means to limit a big idea into a narrow subject for

my intended audience to grasp and learn. I had created an outline explaining my points and
backed by credible sources on both sides of the argument. I had found out that finding a credible
source is really difficult at firsthand, but after extra reading on OWL Purdue, I can see a glimpse
of the difference between a source and a credible source for my audience to witness and by
swayed. Two skills that I obtains and hone during the process of conducting a Wikipedia research
are process and the research action itself. In order for me to get connected with the community
background of my topic, I first need my peers to revise my Wikipedia draft in order for me to see
where the level of understand between the Wikipedia article and the intended audience to
understand. To further increase the connection with the article and the community, I have to go in
search of new credible sources that would help elevate my points in the assignment.

With these skills in mind, I planned on having a need to have my peers look over the draft
to witness the level of my message and points reaching out to the readers and to hone this
connection thru conductive research and understanding. Possibly in my future physics classes, an
engineering class or even my career where I needed to connect my points to my peers in order
for them to understand the message which would result in lower chance of human error in our
work as well as improve my communication and teamwork in my future co-workers.

During the revision process of the Wikipedia Project, there are certain guidelines that a
Wikipedia article must follow in order to be allowed to show to the public on media. Therefore
one of the guidelines was to not include any opinion of the topic of the Wikipedia article which
resulted in me to focus on the facts than my opinions on the topic of the writing assignment.

In total, I learn that each writing assignment is followed be a set of guidelines and many
amounts of revisions in order for the writing assignment to fully reach out to the intended
audience to understand our main points on a subject.

The Podcast Project:


In the beginning of creating this project, I learn how to write a script based on the
observations and thoughts that I gain from my primary research experiencing first-hand
experience. I first had to understand the purpose of the project which is to learn how to connect
with a certain audience using specific tone and address on the topic of my primary research. The
primary research will allow the readers to see and grasp their senses to connect to the research
thus allowing the script to be alive and have a personal meaning to them. In order to have the
audience to further grasp the message of the script, we as a class will conduct our independent
voice recording to allow readers to gain higher understanding and connect by interpreting the
tone and the words together to create a tool used to grasp the message to near a hundred percent.

When approaching this project, I first had to read the prompt which explicitly explains a
five to six minute podcast which in terms of seven hundred to eight hundred words for the
assigned project. What really worked well for the writing process of the project was simply the
detailed description thus makes the downfall of me getting carried away with too much detail
that would evidently allow readers to become lost or confused with such details explained. In the

future, I should gain sufficient observation that would allow me to be more flexible when writing
the script to show the readers a simpler and clearer explanation on the adventures I experience
when conducting this research.

The first skill that was improved when conducting the podcast project is research.
Research in terms of collecting and analyzing data and conclude with new knowledge by the
primary research is greatly shown to the audience simply by explaining detailed occurrences or
observation linked by my intentional thoughts that happened during the travel of the hike. The
second former skill that was improved over the primary research is the process to which many
revisions and unnecessary wordiness helps polish and prevent cluster of confusion in the
atmosphere of the audience when writing or scripting our recording voices to connect to the
reader.

After finishing my last learning journal for UWP 001Y, I personally feel a great sense of
joy to improve my writing assignments to be able to make my messages clear to a particular
discourse community around the world. Some of the strengths that were improved were the
processes of revising our peers writing assignments and knowledge of conventions in which we
focus our language to address a certain discourse community. In a sense, I also feel a burden of
sadness as the class of UWP 001Y comes to an end where built friendships were made within the
atmosphere of room 1 in Olson. As our e-portfolio is soon to be done and our presentations are
soon approaching, I feel as if this is my chance to show my writing processs journey to my peers
and vice versa in order to help them review one last time on our writing process that was
journeyed in UWP 001Y before we leave the course in order to continue our life on earth.
