Vygotsky inspired three techniques to describe how parents contribute to their

infants cognitive development. The three techniques are Zone of Proximal Development

(ZPD), Scaffolding, and Joint Attention. ZPD is essentially problem solving under the

adults guidance. An example would be a parent placing an interesting object/ toy near

an infant while they are on the floor who is on their back in hopes of encouraging the

infant to roll over.

Scaffolding is similar to ZPD however,

it is considered to be an informal teaching

role of the adults while the child is in another

activity. An example would be a child is

struggling to finish a puzzle so the parent

would verbally and physically show the child possible ways to arrange the piece so they

inspect an item or event together, this is what contributes to their cognitive

development. An example of joint attention would be a parent and child engaged in

reading a book, the parent would be verbally and physically demonstrating the book to

the child while the child is engrossed in the explanations of the parent.

These three primary methods are evidence on the importance of parental

involvement in order to help the growth and development of the childs cognitive

growth.
