Introduction
In 1964, Singapore has established the Tourism Promotion Board known as Singapore
Singapore tourism is currently contributing to a 4 percent rise in Singapore's GDP that supports
160,000 jobs (About STB, 2016). Singapore is currently known as the Lion City various
developments in tourism from the past few years. The challenges that Singapore has been facing are
a lack of resources and carelessness of visitors. The stages in Singapore's development in tourist
focus on raising the awareness of Singapores major attractions such as Sentosa and the other
infrastructure places. (About STB, 2016). The purpose of this essay is to show the difference of
tourism in the year from 1964 to 2016. Then to also show how tourism in Singapore has developed
from the past years until the present time. How tourism plays a major role in Singapore's economy.
There are three main areas where tourism in Singapore has had positive impacts
Singapores Economic
The first is tourism has a positive impact on Singapores economics. As Singapore continues
to grow by building attractions, there will be a lot of opportunities for job employment may be
short-term jobs or long-term jobs. Examples of job employment are the manager, assistant, finance,
accountant, etc. Research from the last past few years shows lots of progress since Singapore was in
a great state of low economics. There are about 10 million people per year in Singapore in 2007 till
2008 that have an averaged of $15 billion. 4. There are also financial crisis that are affecting the
economies all over the world. The number of tourists came to Singapore fell by 4.3% in 2008. The
infrastructure that are included are International Cruise Terminal, Garden by Bay, etc. (Yong.W,
2011). In the past few years, Singapore has been planning a lot of projects to develop the economics

of Singapore even better. Although things may be rough in the past few years but Singapore can
overcome the obstacle that has been blocking Singapores economics by building attractions and
other entertainment facilities. In 2014, tourism plays an important role in Singapores economics
since the percent that it increases is higher than any year that Singapore has ever been experienced
in. According to World Travel Tourism Council, in 2014, the total impact that tourism has an impact
is $66 billion of Singapores total GDP. This amount of money is bigger or larger than the banking,
education and agriculture sections. The total amount of money that tourism has been sustained is
$4.4 million direct and indirect jobs in 2014. Tourism has expanded the GDP about 128% between
1995 till 2014. In the meanwhile, the total economy has expanded about 168%. In 2014, the total
amount of tourists is $18.9 billion, 14% of all service exports and 3.3% of all goods and services.
(How does Travel & Tourism compare to other sectors?, 2014). According to the statistics in
2014, Singapore has developed so much in the past years since all of the categories of economic
increases a lot of percent per year. For example, GDP, employment, growth forecast by industry and
exports. Which not only increasing the economic of Singapore but also increasing Singapores
both GDP and job employments. Singapore will also continue to develop and attract more tourists
segments with further strength. Therefore, tourism has a positive impact on Singapores economics.
Singapores Socio-Cultural
The second is tourism have a positive impact in Singapores socio-cultural. Tourists are
moving away from mass tourism and increase the interested in local cultures and heritages. The
increase in a number of tourists where tourists help to improve infrastructure or social well-being of
local residents. Research from Lanna Dutta stated that by promoting and developing cultural
relations increases the percentage of tourists who came to Singapore by developing cultural

relations. By socializing and interacting with many different kinds of people helps to develop and
enhances the skills of the local citizens to communicate with each other between tourists. So the
local citizens tried to help preserve the historical places and monuments, such as the Merlion at
Marina Bay, Chinatown, etc. (Dutta, 2008) By promoting and developing new culture relations and
other new things that people havent seen it before or people who wanted to see things can come to
the country to experience it. By interacting and socializing with new people also help sharing
experience and preserving culture. Research from Peggy Teo the last few years shows that the
development of an infrastructure in Singapore that has been improving quickly. The original
architecture of Singapore was made by timber-palm, which was created in a village called
Kampong Village House. The story was when the British colonized Singapore, they influences to
replace timber with cement and stones. This is were in the period of 1908-1940, houses with two
until four storey buildings are housed by the immigrant population. (Peggy, 2010) Singapore uses
ideas from other countries culture to develop and improve Singapores culture to be even better. Not
only tourism is only an economics but also involves social, culture, political, architecture and
historical places. Socio-cultural has positive impacts on tourism that contribute changing in value
systems, individual behavior, family relationships, lifestyles, traditional ceremonies, etc. This is one
Singapores environment
The third is tourism have a positive impact on Singapores environment. Tourism help
promote the conservation of natural resources such as rainforests. This helps tourism by generating
funds from the parks, amusement parks, other attractions and entertainment facilities by collecting
entrance fees, guidance fees and other services fees. Research from an article written by Peggy Teo
shows that both natural and man-made by people is essential to tourism. The essential in tourisms
are the quality in nature and man-made environment. Now Singapore is developing and improving

both the countryside and in the citys environment to make Singapore a better place to live. Which
Singapore has earned the title of the Garden City. People might overlook that tourism is not a big
effect in Singapore but tourism have the potential benefits to raise the awareness of the environment
values. Usually, tourists would like to sightseeing natural places or attractions or parks that have a
nice view so that tourism can take photos and enjoy the scenery. By having these kinds of places
helps to relax the body and mind and also help to attract more customers. Singapore is trying to
improving and protecting the environment more since Singapore has a title called the garden city.
(Peggy, 2010) Researchers from Lanna Dutta interpret about Singapore development in cultivation
and Singapores natural resources. After all, Singapore has earned the title of the Garden City after
planning and cultivation. There are more than just the developments such as the up coming garden.
For example, the waterfront garden at Marina Bay and the Sky Park on top of Marina Bay Sands.
(Dutta, 2008) Therefore, tourism would like to visit places that are attractive, clean and can take
beautiful photos or pictures. Singapore has developed many attractions, for example, Marina Bay
and Marina Bay Sands. The government supports Singapore by making new ways to get enough
water supplies and other utilities for local residents and tourists who came to Singapore. Both
natural and man-made are essential to tourism that improves the quality of the environment. Now
Singapore is developing or improving the surrounding environment including major attractions and
scenery. Tourists would like to see the clean, nice and not polluted environment. Now the
government is trying to conserve the environment to maintain high visit in Singapore. This is why
the environment has a positive impact on tourism and this is the last positive aspect of tourism in
Singapore.
In a nutshell, tourism has a positive impact in Singapore. Two online articles show how
tourism has a positive impact on Singapores economics. Studies from different Ph.D. Professors
from two different articles and journal show how tourism has a positive impact in Singapores
socio-cultural. Furthermore, according to two researchers shows how tourism has a positive impact

on Singapores environment. Many PhD. professors and researchers who agreed that tourism has a
positive impact in Singapore also supported my evidence. There are many factors and real facts that
tell us how tourism has a positive impact in Singapore not only economic, socio-culture and
environment but also globalization and etc. Other countries or the local resident in Singapore may
overlook or did not realize how tourism can become such a big impact in Singapore. Tourism in
improving the economy, socio-cultural and environment. Singapore has many plans to changed
Singapore into another world or another better country. These plans will slowly cultivate Singapore
as to what it is now.
