Welcome 3-4
Conference Schedule 5
The digital music market is ever evolving, and the 12 months since our last Music Connected
conference are no exception. So what does 2016 hold for independent labels and artists in the
digital market? Once again we have assembled those in the know to share their insight and
experience to help indie labels stay ahead of the curve on all things digital.
Today you can meet many of the long-term fixtures of the digital music landscape, as well as new
and innovative companies and services. In our conference hall you can take in a programme of
panels and presentations from some of the smartest digital music minds out there. If you want to
maximise your digital business, youre in the right place.
There are three distinct areas you may find yourself in today:
The Digital Market Place: Head up the stairs at the back of the foyer to the first floor to discover
several halls of stands hosted by digital companies. Here you will find the companies behind the
latest digital innovations, the top digital services, the collection societies, anti-piracy solutions and
much more. We strongly recommend you spend time meeting every company exhibiting in the
Digital Market Place, as they may well be able to provide you with services that could make or
save you money or perhaps both!
The Conference Zone: Packed to the rafters last year, The Conference Zone will offer a
programme of panel discussions and presentations about potential revenue streams, new
business models and digital services and techniques for driving digital salesnot to be missed.
The Networking Zone: Also known as the bar! A beautiful room overlooking the River Thames
where you can network throughout the day and enjoy lunch (complimentary) and drinks from the
bar.
On behalf of AIM I hope that you find Music Connected a stimulating and productive day.
Lara Baker
Events Director
On an industry level, the figures from the IFPI recently showed that the transition from ownership
to access is proceeding fast, with streamings exponential growth counterbalancing download and
physical sales declines. Indeed, on the IFPIs figures, the recorded music industry as a whole grew
in 2015. This is unambiguously good news. It shows the resilience of this small industry that we
love so deeply.
Were here today because we are doing something worthwhile. I noted in a keynote at this event a
couple of years ago that independents are (largely) in business in order to put out more music that
theyre passionate about. I contrasted this with the majors, who are in business to make
shareholder returns. Thats not to say that one is objectively better or worse than the other, although
as a music lover I know which one I prefer. This divergence of purpose for the two sectors of our
industry continues to be illustrated more and more strongly, and the recent acquisitions by Sony
and the travails of SFX underscore the importance and the challenge of remaining independent
and motivated by non-financial ideas of success.
Music Connected is about arming the independent sector with the knowledge, understanding and
inspiration to take our businesses forward into the increasingly digital market, whether relating to
content delivery and distribution, marketing, or industry-wide trends. AIMs efforts in convening the
cream of the UK and international independent sector and those connected with it deserve our
thanks they are working to illuminate the opportunities and challenges that we all face, and to find
those who can offer guidance, ideas and strategies to navigate them successfully.
While AIM and other industry bodies do such a good job of their campaigning and educational
work, it is up to us to take decisions which enable us as a sector to retain our independence and
flourish within the industry. The tools, knowledge and approaches are there to be used to take
control of your business in the digital realm, and if we do not take full control, we shouldnt be
surprised when our work is pushed in directions that we did not choose.
This phase of the industry is all about taking that control and making your decisions on your
terms.
