Evaluation Activity 2 - How does

your media product represent

particular social groups?

My magazine represents the

makers and scenesters social
groups and I designed my magazine
and styled my artist in a way that
would appeal to both groups. The
colour scheme of my magazine
followed the classic colour schemes
that magazines follow but with an
injection of colour, making it stand out a bit more. I felt that this would fit
in with these two social groups because they are both a bit different from
people who follow all the trends in music and fashion. Its not that either
group is alternative but they arent afraid to be a bit different. I felt the
medium shot camera angle that I used was suitable because I didnt want
my magazine to solely focus on one artist. Instead, I wanted it to be more
about sharing the focus among a series of different artists.
When looking back at old 60s shoots, where I found most of my
inspiration, I found that a lot of the models were serious or smirking. I
incorporated this into mine by having my models facial expression a small
smirk on both the cover and double page spread, then a serious one on
the contents page. It was important to me for the model to appear
natural. I thought these facial expressions would fit my target audience
better because I didnt think that members from either group would be
posers. My model Lori is similar to the 60s actress Anna Karina and the
modern musician Lana Del Rey. Lori and Anna Karina both have similar
hairstyles as both had/have a block fringe. Both Lana Del Rey and Anna
Karinas signature makeup look is fairly natural makeup and then a bolder
eye look with cat eye eyeliner. I think that this represents the scenesters
and makers because neither one would go for bold makeup all over in
order to stand out but instead would go for a more natural look with a
single bold feature. Neither are
afraid to experiment but also
dont go too out there like
these dont. Loris makeup is
styled in the same way with
neutral tones all over and then
a bold cat eye look for her eye
makeup. In terms of fashion, all
of them experiment with
different tones and colours, but
in general dont have an
elaborate fashion with elaborate
designs. The thing they have in
common is that all of their fashion is fairly casual. Anna Karina is mostly
pictured in jumpers and Lana Del Rey is usually pictured in slightly girlier
clothing. Lori is pictured wearing casual jumpers and skirts, both of which
show her fashion influence. All three are of white ethnicity which both the
scenesters and makers typically are. In terms of differences, Loris style of
music is different to Lana Del Rey and makes music that is a bit more
positive and light hearted.
