Pastors Corner Last weekend, young women in our church with the help of some
dedicated adults had a successful retreat, which not only attracted many
young women from our church but also from the community. Please see
the photos in this Trumpet Call, and say a special word of thanks to Ann
Osbun, Brianna Osbun, Kelli Mercurio, Michelle Dodoo, and Dawn
Johns who helped put together a great retreat. They were assisted
by many others, including some of our men who cooked for the girls.
As I witnessed at the Men's Retreat the weekend before, these kind
of intense spiritual experiences change lives. The weekend before
that was the second of our three Confirmation Class retreats. We have these retreats
because of the impact they make. Many in our congregation will remember marriage enrichment retreats
sponsored by our church, or spiritual life retreats for the whole family. I remember these from my own
upbringing in Northern Virginia, going to Camp Highroad, a United Methodist camp and retreat facility. I'm
hoping that in my time as your pastor, we can bring back some of these spiritual life experiences for everyone
in our church.
When a faith experience is concentrated in a weekend or even a week, it makes a difference. In fact, estimates
have been done that more Christian education can be experienced in a concentrated week than in a whole
week of Sunday School. That does not suggest that we end Sunday School; Sunday School, weekly
discipleship classes, and Junior Church are all effective ways to teach people about the Christian faith. Rather,
it means that we find ways to bring in more concentrated experiences like those listed above.
One sure way to do that is to emphasize and promote our Christian camps, and especially the
programming at Pocono Plateau. We have camp brochures available for anyone to pick up, and
there is much information to be found at: www.poconoplateau.org. There are great camps

available this summer for children and youth of all ages, and great
opportunities for adult volunteers at the Plateau. If you can't participate
directly in camping ministry, there is a child or youth who would love to
go but his or her parents have trouble getting the funds together to send
the child. Our Mission Connexion is receiving an offering each week for
camperships to Pocono Plateau, but our church can also receive funds Dear ____________,
to directly help sponsor children in our church and community who would
like to attend. Please mark any contributions for "Pocono Plateau I understand that the troubles of
