The Institute for Personalized Learning

The Institute defines personalized learning as an approach to

learning and instruction that is designed around individual
learner readiness, strengths, needs and interests. Learners are
active participants in setting goals, planning learning paths,
tracking progress and determining how learning will be
demonstrated. At any given time, learning objectives, content,
methods and pacing are likely to vary from learner to learner as
they pursue proficiency relative to established standards. A fully
personalized environment moves beyond both differentiation and
individualization.

Charleston County School District

CCSDs Personalized Learning Initiative

Charleston County School District is the recipient of one of only sixteen Race to
the Top-District grants from the United States Department of Education. As a
national grantee, CCSD was awarded $19.4 million to transform learning, and
teacher and student achievement, through personalized learning in our schools.
With this funding, CCSD is supporting the development of a Personal Mastery
system in 19 schools with the vision of expanding this work to schools across the
district.
What is Personalized Learning?

Personal Mastery is built upon the foundations of a mastery-based system and a

personalized learning environment. In a mastery-based system, students
progress through curriculum by proving mastery on each standard. In a
personalized learning environment, the education is individualized and
differentiated to meet learners unique needs. Students are offered choice about
what is learned, when it is learned, and how it is learned. Personal Mastery is the
marriage of these systems and our vision for all students.
Personalized Learning is...
a competency-based achievement model that allow students to progress
at their own pace according to ability and skill level.
student-centered with a focus on collaboration and connection to students
individual interests, passions, and aspirations.
individualized with learning plans based on South Carolina State
Standards.
teacher facilitated with students exploring content, selecting resources,
developing and collaborating on solutions and outcomes.
incorporating digital and online learning that accommodates a flexible
schedule.
Ultimately...

where schools develop learners that actively participate in the design of

their learning and become independent, goal-oriented and reflective
learners prepared for the 21st Century global workforce.

EDTECH Innovation in New York Public Schools

Now and in generations past, education has been our nations foundation for
opportunity. But todays education system requires transformation if we want to
prepare students for success in a globally-connected world. To thrive, our
students need to be engaged in learning that is relevant to their lives, and allows
them to master the skills of tomorrow.

The iZone harnesses todays resources to design school around the unique
strengths, interests and needs of each student. We believe in expanding learning
opportunities beyond the classroom walls and the dismissal bell. And we provide
teachers with the resources and flexibility to support each of their students in
developing the skills required for college and career success.
