Broad Areas of Learning:

Health and well-being: This lesson will contribute to student mental
health in that they will have a method of dealing with mental and
emotional stress in healthy ways. They will also be able to
understand the health and well-being needs of others better.
Media Literacy: This lesson will teach students to be critical of
things that they see on the media and be wary of one-sided
perspectives.
Citizenship and Community Life: This lesson aids students to
integrate into a community life in that they will be able to connect
and empathize with other members of a community.
Differentiated Instruction:
Students will be addressed through a variety of means ranging from
lecture, to group activities, to film analysis. The multitude of
approaches will hopefully address the many different kinds of
learning styles that exist.
Having the students come up with answers on their own and discuss
amongst themselves is an effective method to having them retain
knowledge, as opposed to simply lecturing to them.
Further considerations:
Having students address real life issues that may be raised
throughout the lesson allows students to connect schooling to their
own lives in a way that is tangible.

FORMATIVE - Assessment FOR learning:

The students will be filling out a worksheet as/after they watch the
YouTube clip. This, along with the work they produce during their
discussion, and the discussion itself, will provide solid material and
evidence to assess the students.
FORMATIVE - Assessment AS learning:
Having students discuss their answers two separate times will allow
the students to teach each other and to demonstrate their knowledge.
SUMMATIVE - Assessment OF learning:
Following this lesson, there will be assignment in which they will
write about a song which is very influential to them and why. This
will help them think more clearly about the role music can play in
social, cultural, political, and personal change and development.
The final assessment of this unit will be a biography project on a
famous African Canadian or African American.
Each class during this unit has begun with a short three minute
biography of a famous African American or Canadian. This will
give the students some ideas as to how a biography should appear.
Not only will the students give information on the individual, but
they will also have to relate it to their own lives and explain why
they chose that particular individual and how their achievements
have affected the student and society at large.
