STEP 2: TRANSITIONS AND LEAD-INS

TRANSITIONS

- You need to use a transition before introducing each piece of evidence.

- Some examples of transitions to use are: For example, In fact, One reason, Another reason, In addition,

Furthermore, Also, Additionally, Lastly, Finally, etc.

- Here are two more transition words I just researched and could use in my writing:

1) 2)

LEAD-IN PHRASES

- A lead-in is where you provide the context of the quote (who is speaking and in what situation?). It sets up the

quote.

- Here are your sample lead-in phrases

STEP 3: EVIDENCE

Definition: This is the information/reasons that supports your claim. Evidence can take many different forms

like statistics, examples, quotes, etc. Just remember to give credit to your source!

Fill in the blanks below to say which means paraphrasing and which means quoting.

Paraphrasing
a) _____________________= changing the text to be in your own words; you do not take the evidence in

the text and write it word for word.

Quoting
b) _____________________= using quotation marks when you are pulling evidence directly from the

text, word for word.

Here are FORMULAS you can use to cite evidence:

Quoting a Complete Sentence: ________________, ___________________, Quotey quote (Last Name #).

(transition word) + (lead-in phrase) (capital letter)

Quoting an Incomplete Sentence: ________________, ___________________, quotey quote (Last Name #).

(transition word) + (lead-in phrase) (NO capital letter)

Paraphrasing: ________________, ___________________, paraphrased stuff (Last Name #).

Source Material:

More American students are graduating from high school than ever before, according to new data from

the Department of Education. The national graduation rate hit a record high of 81 percent in the 2012-13

school year, the data show.

Use some of the quote above and rewrite it using the three different formulas above. Use different

transitions and lead-ins each time!

1. Quoting a Complete Sentence:

In the text it says, "More American students are graduating from high school than ever

before, according to new data from the Department of Education."

2. Quoting an Incomplete Sentence:

demonstrates how your evidence supports your claim. It should be stated entirely in your own words.

Evidence
a) Remember, when writing a warrant, you explain how your _______________ supports your claim.

b) For the claim and evidence below, write a warrant.

1. Teenage drivers pay more for car insurance than any other group of drivers. One reason

insurance companies give to explain the high charges is the fact that, 34% of teens admit to

texting while driving (Husseini 2).

This shows why insurance Cost more for young drivers. They are looking out

for driving consequences that happen usually by teenagers.

2. Some schools have a graduation requirement of completing 24 hours of community service to

teach students the lifelong importance of volunteering. The London School of Economics found

that the more people volunteered, the happier they were: the odds of being very happy rose

Internet trolls are becoming a widespread issue with serious consequences. To begin with, according to

experts, a troll is a person who spreads negative feelings by starting arguments or upsetting people, by

posting inflammatory or offensive messages in an online community for their own amusement (Stein 28).

The fact that people waste their time trying to upset other people is pretty disturbing. The whole point of an

online community is that it is a place to share ideas, not scare people away because of negativity.

Additionally, the article states, A Pew Research Center survey published two years ago found that 70% of

18-24 year-olds had experienced harassment, and 26% of women that age said they had been stalked

online (Stein 28). These numbers show that internet trolling is extremely common. And the high number

of stalking incidents show that the problem is very serious and not just some harmless fun. In fact, even

celebrities, like Leslie Jones from Ghostbusters have reported incidents involving personal insults, racial

slurs, and even threats of rape and murder (Stein 29). Some people say that internet trolling is just meant to

be funny and that people are too sensitive. However, I dont think anyone would be laughing if their email

inbox or twitter account was filled with those kinds of messages. Lastly, there is not a lot being done to stop

trolling: many victims are finding laws insufficient and local police untrained (Stein 31). Police and other

authority figures may not be trained to know how to handle online harassment. Even worse, unless

someones life is clearly in danger, social media companies dont usually get involved. Unfortunately,

trolling is a problem that is only going to continue and the internet community is going to need to come up

with better ways to control it before all sense of community is lost.

STEP 8: PRACTICE WRITING A CEW PARAGRAPH
Claim:

The U.S. health care system is being very expensive and it's not very eective but it
can be stopped by catching up to financial incentives.

Evidence 1:
DONT FORGET TO USE THE EVIDENCE FORMULAS!
To begin with, in the article states, "U.S. is spending far more per capita ($8,508) on health care
than Norway ($5,669), which has the second most expensive system"( Lenny Bernstein).

Warrant 1:
AIM FOR 2+ SENTENCES
The U.S. is losing thousands of dollars all cause of the health care system not being eective
to the people in the United States. The U.S. should actually work on this problem so they stop
losing so much money.
Evidence 2:
DONT FORGET TO USE THE EVIDENCE FORMULAS!
In addition, Lenny Bernstein claims, "Survey findings indicate that from the patients
perspective, and based on outcome indicators, the performance of American health care is
severely lacking"( Lenny Bernstein).

Warrant 2:
AIM FOR 2+ SENTENCES
Years pass by and the U.S. is supposedly making the health care system better but really they
are not. They should start to get it together and actually fix the problem so they stop wasting a
lot of money and so that they don't have to deal with this problem anymore.

Evidence 3:
DONT FORGET TO USE THE EVIDENCE FORMULAS!
Furthermore, in the article it informs readers that, "Government can set standards, provide
incentives and exact penalties for poor performance, professional organizations that represent
various parts of the medical system must get behind the eort to force changes, and many
have"( Lenny Bernstein).

Warrant 3:
AIM FOR 2+ SENTENCES
If the government start to set standards it could help to improve the health care for people in
United States. Catching up to financial incentives could help to motivate actions to improve
the health care system of the U.S.

Concluding Sentence:
Generally speaking, if the government starts to take action to improve the health care
system it will help the United States to stop losing money that could be useful for other
reasons and it will help the people who need the health care that are living in the U.S.
Now COPY and PASTE the sentences into ONE COMPLETE body paragraph:

The U.S. health care system is being very expensive and it's not very eective but it can
be stopped by catching up to financial incentives. To begin with, in the article states,
"U.S. is spending far more per capita ($8,508) on health care than Norway ($5,669), which has
the second most expensive system"( Lenny Bernstein). The U.S. is losing thousands of
dollars all cause of the health care system not being eective to the people in the
United States. The U.S. should actually work on this problem so they stop losing so
much money. In addition, Lenny Bernstein claims, "Survey findings indicate that from
the patients perspective, and based on outcome indicators, the performance of
American health care is severely lacking"( Lenny Bernstein). Years pass by and the U.S.
is supposedly making the health care system better but really they are not. They should
start to get it together and actually fix the problem so they stop wasting a lot of money
