Screen Test

For my AS level portfolio I have created a textual analysis prior to creating

my creative artefact. I have analysed and compared the representation of
women in the romantic-comedy genre. The two films I explored are Angus
Thongs and Perfect Snogging and the First Time. As my creative artefact I
intend to produce 9 key frames that portray the same representation of
women and contain conventional romantic-comedy elements that were
exemplified in the two films I analysed.

I created a short script of a scene that would generically fit in to a

romantic-comedy film. Im going to base my 9 key frames off of the script
entitled Drunken Love. In preparation for my creative artefact I must
create a screen test regarding the auditions taken place for the roles of
Millie and Connor. I auditioned two females and two males for the roles
within my script. I had to ensure that each character fitted the
stereotypical representation of female and male protagonists within the
romantic-comedy genre.

Character Profiles:

Actor 1 (Role of Millie)

Name: Megan Fennesy
Age: 17
Height: 55
Features: Light brown hair,
Caucasian, light brown eyes

Screen Test Notes on Megan (Role of Millie)

This character is meant to portray the characters emotions clearly and
connect to the clear stereotypes of a female in a romantic-comedy film.
The character has to effectively fit the role of a drunken teenage girl.

MILLIE is drunk, stumbling and throwing her arms in the air as

she talks.
MILLIE
(Mumbles)
Connor you are sooooo niceall the other boys wouldnt d-do
thisB-ben wouldnt do this.

I felt that Megan lacked confidence and enthusiasm when delivering her
lines. She was unable to use her body language to effectively connote a
drunken teenager. Megan fits the stereotype of a female protagonist in a
romantic-comedy. However Megan couldnt portray her emotions clearly
to the audience.

Overall I feel like Megan is not right for the role of Millie due to her lack of
confidence and inability to portray the characters emotions clearly.

Actor 2 (Role of Millie)

Name: Tamia Mullaney-
Downer
Age: 16
Height: 56
Features:Caucasian, brown
hair, blue eyes

Screen Test Notes on Tamia (Role of Millie)

When first watching this actresss performance I was surprised by her
deliverance of lines and facial expressions. She was able to effectively fit
the role of Millie and convey a believable protagonist. I asked Tamia to
deliver several lines and follow a set of stage directions within the script. I
watched the actress from several angles to see how she can portray her
emotions through the use of body language. Tamia has the stereotypical
appearance of a female protagonist in the romantic-comedy genre as well
as fitting into Laura Mulveys male gaze theory.

Tamia was confident and enthusiastic about the role. She was able to
portray both romantic and comedic elements to the audience when
reading through the script. Overall Tamia was good candidate for my film
and I feel she will work well in the role of Millie.

Actor 3 (Role of Connor)

Name: Erlandas Barkauskas
Age: 16
Height: 6ft
Features: Blonde hair, blue eyes,
Caucasian

Screen Test Notes on Erlandas (Role of Connor)

This character has to portray love and romance to the audience. He
also has to maintain a romantic connection with the actress that plays
Millie. The actor must effectively convey his emotions towards the
protagonists with the use of body language and facial expressions.

MILLIE looks intently into CONNORS eyes. CONNORS smile slowly

drops as he stares back; he places his hand onto MILLIES
face. CONNOR moves into kiss MILLIE, just as they get close
enough to make contact MILLIEs face contours before she
throws up onto CONNORS shoes.

Erlandas lacked any sort of enthusiasm when reading the script. He was
unable to work well with Tamia and lacked any sort of body language.
Erlandas wasnt what I was looking for appearance wise for my creative
artefact. Erlandas doesnt fit the stereotype for the love interest within a
romantic-comedy film. I asked Erlandas to act out stage directions within
the script and I felt he lacked a connection with my female protagonist.

Overall I feel like Erlandas isnt right for the role of Connor due to his lack
of enthusiasm about the creative artefact.

Actor 4 (Role of Connor)

Name: Mehdadul Kazi
Age: 16
Height: 58
Features:Green eyes, Brown hair,
Caucasian

Screen Test Notes on Mehdadul (Role of Connor)

When first watching this actor read the script I wasnt to sure about his
portrayal of emotions through his facial expressions. However once I
asked him to act with my chosen protagonist (Tamia). I saw that he had a
lot of romantic chemistry with her character, which would work effectively
within the film. I asked him to act out the last stage directions within the
script with Tamia; he worked with the actress well and was able to convey
the conventions of love and romance well.

Overall I feel like Mehdadul fits the conventional stereotype of the love
interest within a Romantic-Comedy and works well with our main actress
which means the portrayal of love will be clear to the audience.
