(a) Table 1 contains two sets of data, which define the value of a complex
and unknown function, f(x), at two different values of x
Table 1
(c) You are provided with another data point which should enable you to
make a better estimate of f1(1).
Table 3
Figure 1 shows the unknown function f(x) and all three data points
Identify the line representing the first order polynomial that you
defined in (a) and enter the letters identifying that line, for example BC.
Answer 7.-----
Identify the line through any two of the data points that represents
the first order polynomial that would give the best estimate of the value of
f(1).
Answer 8.-----
Give the equation of this line, by substituting the values for these
data points into your existing spreadsheet table and hence calculating
values for the coefficients b0, b1 and x0. Make x0 the lowest value of x.
Using this equation, what is your best estimate of the value of f1(1)?
Answer 12.-----
(a) Table 1 contains two sets of data, which define the value of a complex
and unknown function, f(x), at two different values of x
Table 1
Extend Table 1 by adding the following data to the bottom of the table and
a fourth column which you should used to calculate the second finite divided
difference. (Check your notes for the fomulae)
Calculate the values of b0, b1 and b2 for the second order Newton's Divided
Difference Interpolating Polynomial listed above
Use the equation you obtained in (a) to estimate the value of f2(1):
Answer 10.-----
These points have been plotted with the unknown function f(x) in Figure 2.
Using the values of f2(x) you have calculated and the coordinates of the
points on the unknown function given in Figure 2, find the magnitude of the
true error in the second order estimate at the following:
(d) What is the magnitude of the true error in the value of the first order estimate
f1(1) calculated above:
