Jyotish Gemstone Selection to Remedy Afflicted Planets (Grahas)

What are Jyotish Gemstones? -

Some believe that gemstones can have a positive or a negative effect on a person, depending on
your astrological birth chart. Planets, and the qualities or "issues" they represent, can be strong,
or weak, debilitated, afflicted, or a conjunctive mixture of these planet-to-planet influences. If
you have not studied Jyotish, it is wise that you have a qualified Vedic astrologer (Jyotishi) read
your chart.

Your Jyotishi can identify the issues related to weak planetary alignments at the exact time and
place of an individual's birth. Using the birth chart assessment as a guide, a Jyotishi can then
identify an appropriate gemstone prescription. Every chart is different, think of it as a cosmic
finger-print. I like to think of it as your spiritual personality. I believe that the gemstones can
counteract or enhance the effects of weakness or the effects of strength in your chart. The text
known as the Garuda Purana indicates the following planet-stone associations:

Sun Ruby (Corundum), Garnet (Alamadine, Pyrope, Rhodolite), Red Spinel, --- I add
Synthetic Ruby, Synthetic Garnet, Synthetic Spinel, Linde Star Rubies & natural Star Rubies,
Red Zircon, Red Cubic Zirconia, and Natural or Synthetic Red Emerald (Bixbite extremely
Moon Pearl, Moonstone, --- I add Cultured Freshwater/Oyster Pearls, Tissue Nucleated
Pearl, and Mother of Pearl!
Mars Red Coral, Carnelian, Red Agate, --- I add Red Chalcedony (Sard), and Sunstone
Mercury Emerald, Green Tourmaline, Peridot (Olivine), --- I add Synthetic/Natural Green
Spinel, Prasiolite (Green Quartz), Green Chrysoprase, and Green Cubic Zirconia.
Jupiter Yellow Sapphire, Topaz, --- I add Citrine (Quartz), Lemon Quartz, Whisky Quartz,
and Yellow Cubic Zirconia
Venus Diamond, White Sapphire, --- I add Phenakite, White Beryl, White Topaz, Clear Cubic
Zirconia, Quartz, even Mercury Mist CZ, and Mystic Fire Topaz because they are pretty like
Venus, who rules my Taurus, so you know...
Saturn Blue Sapphire, Lapis, --- I add Natural/Synthetic Blue Spinel, Amethyst, Star
Sapphire(s), Blue Zircon, Tanzanite, Alexandrite, and Purple or Blue Cubic Zirconia.
Rahu Hessonite Garnet, Orange Zircon, --- I add Natural/Synthetic Orange Sapphire,
Spessartite Garnet, Orange Topaz, and Orange Cubic Zirconia.
Ketu Chrysoberyl, Cat's Eye, --- I add Tiger Eye, Apatite Cat's Eye, Cat's Eye Zircon, Cat's
Eye Sillimanite, Cat's Eye, Moonstone, Star Diopside, and Multi-Star quartz.

Gems are usually set in rings or pendants allowing the stone to slightly touch the skin. Ask your
Astrologer what finger to wear it on, and when is the best time to begin wearing it. It's believed that
wearing the gemstone for the first time while the moon is waxing on the specified day and time is
very beneficial. According to astrologers, a prayer should be recited before wearing a Jyotish stone.
The individual should light a ghee lamp and incense stick while meditating on God. Some may choose
to perform an abhishek (bathing ceremony) for the ring or pendant. Simply clean the ring in milk and
then sacred water from the Ganges. Recite the mantra 108 times (if provided).

Individuals are usually advised to wear the gemstone at all times. It's said that if an individual is
separated from the gem for a long period of time, the stone may change its vibration, thereby
becoming less powerful.

The ideal, (i.e. a high grade), ruby is slightly red-violet, to slightly pinkish-red (A lighter, pale-medium-red
is the closest match for the Root Chakras color archetype). In the Jyotish system Rubies are a type two
gemstone. That means they are allowed to have some minor inclusions viewable through a loupe at 10x,
but the gem should be eye flawless. Ruby is the red form of sapphire. All sapphires are a variety of
corundum and ruby gets its color (and inclusions) from a trace of chromium oxide. Fine Jyotish quality
Rubies (as well as diamonds) are more powerful than other gems and most people do not require the
minimum of two carats, like that of other gemstones. The Minimum carat size that you will need for a
genuine ruby is 1 carat (approx. 6mm round). Hardness of 9.

Red Spinel was often mistaken as ruby throughout its history. Spinel is
Spinel similar chemically to ruby but has an extra magnesium ion. The
chemical formula is MgAl2O4. Choose a 3-carat or larger gemstone
(Lab Created) (approx. 9+mm round). Hardness 7.5-8.

The name "corundum" is derived from the Tamil word "kuruntam"

Corundum meaning "ruby", itself derived from the Sanskrit "kuruvinda".
Corundum is a crystalline form of aluminum oxide (Al2O3)(Fe, Ti, Cr)
(Lab Created Ruby) with traces of iron, titanium, and chromium. Choose a 3-8+ carat
gemstone! (9mm+ Rd.) The Bigger the better. Hardness of 9.

Almadine We carry both natural and lab-created Garnets. Our suppliers lab-create
corundum or spinel to imitate red garnets. The name garnet comes from
Pyrope the word Pomegranate. Natural garnets range in hardness from 6.5-
7.5. Choose a 3-5+ carat gem. (9-12mm+ Rd.) Avoid black
Rhodolite coloration.

Regular heating of corundum is OK. Ruby is the only exception to the

Linde Star rule that Jyotish quality gems cannot be heat-treated. Because the Sun is a
hot Graha, regular heating of rubies (corundum) does not spoil their
Ruby effects. Lab-produced stones can be legally referred to as "real" stones [as
opposed to "natural" (mined) stones]. Asterism is the technical term for the
(Lab Created) star-effect. Choose a 2.5-5 carat gem (approx. 9-12 mm round
cabochon. Hardness of 9.

Red Red Zircon is a zirconium silicate with the chemical formula ZrSiO4.
Its cousin is Blue Zircon the birthstone for December in the Western
Zodiac. Use a 1.5-carat or larger sweet red natural zircon (7mm
Zircon Rd.). Hardness of 7.5

Red Cubic Lab created Cubic Zirconia is a zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) A CZ is denser
than a diamond, optically flawless, has an equal refractive index, and
Zirconia higher dispersion than that of a diamond. Choose a CZ of 5 carats or
more (approx. 11-12mm round). Hardness of 8+.

Natural Pearls are almost extinct, very rare, and because of this they are getting very expensive. Some
Jyotish recommendations may actually call for a larger pearl than one could afford. They exist mostly in the
estate market. A pearl is a hard crystalline calcium carbonate produced by a living mollusk. The ideal Pearl
is perfectly round, or virtually round, and smooth. They naturally glow white and have a brilliant luster.
They are blemish-free. The Color should be White or Cream-white. Top luster should have a super shine that
appears glowing from within. Must have smooth skin, no pits nor blemishes.

Avoid bleached pearls that may have a Dull Chalky luster, flat bottom, dimples or surface blemishes.
Drilling natural pearls is bad, it reduces the Jyotish strength. They should not be worn by anyone else,
as they will pick up a lot of Mind energy from that person. (It may or may not be cleansed psychically.)
Choose the carat size that your astrologer recommends Usually 3 carats or more (6mm

Tissue Nucleated Pearls are 100% natural material very effective for Vedic
Tissue Astrology & Ayurvedic purposes. The Chinese and Japanese have combined
their traditional techniques to produce pearls that test natural. They put a
Nucleated off-round freshwater mussel pearl into the nuclei to start the pearl growth in
Pearl the oyster. Choose the carat size that your astrologer recommends
Usually 3 carats or more (6mm Round).

Cultured (freshwater) Pearls and Akoya Pearls are 100% natural material
Cultured very effective for Vedic Astrology & Ayurvedic purposes. Choose the carat
size that your astrologer recommends Usually 3 carats or more (6mm
Pearl Round).

Moonstone Moonstone is an Uparatna, or secondary gemstone, for the Moon. It is

named for the visual effect, or light sheen, caused by light reflecting
internally in the moonstone from many layers (inclusions) of
different feldspars (crystals). Moonstone is
a sodium potassium aluminum silicate, with the chemical formula (Na,
K)AlSi3O8. Choose a large cabochon 7mm or bigger. Hardness of 6.

Red coral is the common name given to Corallium rubrum & several related species of marine coral. The
distinguishing characteristic of precious corals is their durable and intensely colored red or pink skeleton
composed of intermeshed spicules of hard calcium carbonate (like pearls), colored in shades of red
by carotenoid pigments. Coral has natural growth rings and color striations. Choose a natural, deep,
slightly red-orange coral that has no significant blemishes on top and is also clean on the bottom. Choose a
3+ carat stone. Be careful red coral is only 3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale

(Red Chalcedony)

Carnelian is an Uparatna, or secondary gemstone, for Mars. Both Carnelian and Sard are varieties of
the Silica (silicon dioxide, SiO2) mineral Chalcedony colored by impurities of Iron Oxide. The color
boundaries are inevitably blurred, varying greatly from pale orange to an intense almost-black coloration
designated as Sard, which is generally harder and darker. Hardness ranges from 5.5 7.5. Carnelian will
have a vitreous, dull, greasy, or silky luster. Choose a 4+ carat stone. (10x8mm Cab.)

Sunstone is plagioclase feldspar having a spangled appearance due to opposite running hematite crystals.
It is a is sodium calcium aluminum silicate with the chemical formula of (Ca,Na)((AI,Si)2Si2O8). It is the official
state gemstone of Oregon & it ranges in hardness from 6 - 7.2. Choose a 4+ carat stone.

Emeralds are the most heavily flawed Jyotish gemstone. Emeralds are designated "type three" in clarity,
the only Jyotish gemstone in this class. Chromium, the mineral that makes Emeralds green also makes them
flawed. Therefore, it is very, very difficult to find nearly eye-flawless Emeralds. An eye flawless gem is the best
for Jyotish astrological purposes, the rule to remedy Mercury is clarity first, then you are allowed to choose
from any color green gemstone within the green spectrum. Emerald is beryl, a beryllium aluminum
cyclosilicate [Be3Al2(SiO3)6]. Choose a 1-2-carat or larger gem. Hardness of 7.5-8.

Green Tourmaline is an Uparatna, or secondary

Green gemstone, for Mercury. Tourmaline is a boron silicate
mineral compounded and colored by up to 17 different
Tourmaline elements. Choose a 2-carat or larger gem.
Hardness of 7-7.5.

Green Tsavorite is a member of the grossular garnets,

a calcium-aluminum garnet with the formula Ca3Al2Si3O12.
Garnet Trace amounts of vanadium or chromium provide the
green color. Hardness of 7-7.5. We do offer a limited
(Tsavorite) selection of natural green garnets.

Peridot is a magnesium iron silicate with the formula (Mg,

Peridot Fe)2SiO4 Peridot can be exothermically reacted with CO2 It is
very abundant and can be found on Mars, the Moon, asteroids
(Olivine) and comets. Hardness of 6.5-7.

Green Spinel exists naturally but is rare and expensive,

instead we use lab-created green spinel. Spinel is somewhat
Green Spinel similar chemically to corundum but it has an extra magnesium
ion (MgAl2O4.) Choose a 3-carat or larger gemstone.
(Lab Created) (9mm+ Round) Hardness 7.5-8.

Green Green Cubic

Chrysoprase Prasiolite
There are many types of Quartz, it is the second most abundant mineral on Earths surface. Green quartz is
called Prasiolite but also Chrysoprase. Choose a 3-carat or larger Green Quartz/Amethyst (9mm+
Round). Hardness of 7.

Yellow Sapphire is the gemstone for Jupiter. It exists naturally in reasonable supply fortunately, that one
might easily find an inexpensive one. We use mostly lab created gems. Jupiter is relatively large so
choose a 3-carat (approx. 9mm rd.) yellow sapphire. Hardness of 9.

Yellow Topaz

Yellow Topaz is the Uparatna, for Jupiter. Topaz is an aluminum silicate

mineral with fluorine [Al2SiO4(F,OH)2]. It is the birthstone for November. Choose a 3-carat or larger
gemstone. (approx. 9mm rd.) Hardness of 8.

Citrine Lemon Quartz

Whisky Quartz

Citrine is a Jyotish quality gemstone for Guru/Jupiter. It is often found with a deep, rich, amber-yellow color
but youll want to avoid overly orange citrine or use it if you need it for Rahu or an Orange Chakra healing color
gem. Choose 4+ carats (approx. 11mm rd.) for Citrine and other yellow quartz. Hardness of 7.

Lemon Quartz is suitable for Jupiter. Choose a Avoid overly brown Whisky Quartz. Choose a
4+carat gem 10-12 mm round. Hardness of 7. 4+carat gem 10-12 mm rd. Hardness of 7.

Yellow CZ
(Lab Created)

Lab created Cubic Zirconia is a zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) It exists naturally, (called Baddeleyite) but is rare.
A CZ is denser than a diamond, optically flawless, has an equal refractive index, and higher dispersion than
that of a diamond. They can be crystallized in any color. Choose a CZ of 4-5 carats or more (approx. 11-
12mm round). Hardness of 8+.

Choose a colorless or near colorless Diamond. Color grades D-E-F are colorless; G-H are near colorless.
These are the most desirable colors. Choose clarity grades of VS1 Shapes of a Jyotish Diamond are Round,
Emerald cut, Princess cut, Radiant cut, or Oval and one should choose 1.00 carat or larger (approx. 6 mm
rd.). Most people do not need more than 1 carat unless it is a lab created simulation. Hardness of 10. Avoid
the following: black inclusions (even minute ones at 10X); very thin or thick girdles; medium to strong blue
fluorescence; fair to poor symmetry; overly deep Diamonds, which are dark in the center; and any laser-drilled
or filled Diamonds.

White White Sapphire is an Uparatna, or secondary gemstone, for

Sapphire (Lab- Venus. Choose a 2-carat or larger gemstone (approx.
8mm+ rd.). Hardness of 9.

Phenakite is the third choice for Venus, and is composed of

a beryllium orthosilicate, Be2SiO4 also a powerful and cost-

Phenakite effective alternative to White Sapphire, which is becoming

increasingly difficult to source. Phenakite is a great gemstone
to promote the astrological benefits of Venus. Choose 2
carats or more (approx. 8mm+ rd.). Hardness of 7.5-8.

White Beryl is the fourth choice for a Venus gemstone.

Genuine white beryl is relatively inexpensive and is usually
White Beryl sourced naturally. Beryl is a beryllium aluminum cyclosilicate
[Be3Al2(SiO3)6]. Choose over 3 carats. (approx. 9mm rd.)
Hardness of 7.5-8.

White Topaz would be considered the fifth choice for a

Choose from pale blue, blue-grey, deep pure, cornflower blue, or blue-violet. Look for 'sweet', pleasing
colors. Blue Sapphires should be eye flawless. The best Shape is Oval, Cushion, Emerald/Octagon cut, or
Round. The best size is 2 carats or larger. Hardness of 9. Birthstone of September. Avoid any but the
most minute crystal inclusions, no cracks or cloudy quality. Avoid moderate to significant color zoning.
Avoid heated Blue Sapphires of all types. The Garuda Purana states that heated Blue Sapphires are very
bad for the wearer. Avoid very dark blue to nearly blackish blue in color.

Lapis lazuli literally means "stone of Lzhward" a place in Ancient Persian where
Lapis it has been mined for over 6,000 years. Considered relatively rare, it is
composed of Lazurite and other minerals impurities. Choose a 10x8mm
Lazuli Cabachone. It has 5.5 Hardness.

Unheated Blue Spinel is the secondary gemstone for Shani.

Blue Spinels should be eye flawless - the more flawless, the
better the quality. Minor rutile silk inclusions are acceptable and
Blue Spinel prove that the gem has not been heat-treated. Spinel is similar
(Natural or Lab) chemically to corundum but it has an extra magnesium ion
(MgAl2O4.) Choose a 3-carat or larger gemstone. (approx.
9mm+ rd.) Hardness 7.5-8.
Amethyst is purple quartz. A deep, rich, even violet is desired.
Avoid moderate to significant color zoning. Avoid any but the
Amethyst most minute crystal inclusions, no cracks or cloudy quality.
Cleaner is better for Saturn gems. Choose 4+ carats (approx.
10mm+ rd.) Hardness of 7.

Star Sapphires are blue corundum and will work as a

Star Sapphire Jyotish gem. They asterism of the six sided star helps to
symbolize the rings around Saturn. Choose a 2.5 carat
(Lab Created) (approx. 6mm rd.) cabochon on up. Hardness of 9.

Blue Zircon is also a suitable gem for Saturn. Zircon is a

zirconium silicate with the chemical formula ZrSiO4 Blue

Hessonite is a grossular also known as Gomed or Gomeda. Both are effective for Jyotish. Hessonite is a type two
gemstone that borders on type three. This means more inclusions or flaws are normal, but should be eye flawless or only
have very minute inclusions that can be seen with the naked eye. Some people prefer the lighter type Hessonites and
others the darker type. The wearer should decide based on their personal preference. Choose a 2+ carat garnet.
Hardness of 6.5-7.5.
Spessartite is an orange garnet and is also the Uparatna for Rahu. There are many natural and synthetic Orange
Sapphires available at reasonable prices. Choose a 3+ carat gem. Hardness of 6.5-7.5.
