Assignment 2

CA 3703 Construction Method & Equipment

Deadline:
2 December 2016, 5pm to the General Office of ACE Dept. Each student is
required to submit his/her own assignment.

Presentation Format
A4 sheets stapled in the top left hand cover.
Front page to show: Full name, Student ID no., Assignment name, Course
name and year.
1. The following figure shows the reinforcing detail for a typical internal wall.
(a) Explain the meaning of all terms in the bar designation 11T12-1-300N2
(b) Determine the distance between the adjacent bars marked 4.
(c) Draw the shape of the bar marked 2 and explain the reason for its shape.
(d) Determine the total number of bars marked 3. How are the bars distributed?
(e) Explain the meanings of N1=20, F1=25, End= 20.
2. (1) The following figure (Figure 2a) shows the reinforcing detail for a typical stair.
(a) Explain the meaning of all the terms in the bar designation 7T12-4-150B1.
(b) Explain the function of bar with mark 13.
(c) What is the lapping length between bar with mark 5 and bar with mark 3
(d) Is (are) there any error(s) in work drawing of bar with mark 2 in Figure 2b? If there is,
give the reasons.
(e) What is the total number of bar with mark 2 at top layer in this stair?
(f) Draw the shape of bar with mark 3 including length and angular dimension.

3. The ultimate design moment (M u) to be resisted by the section shown in Figure 3 is
255kNm. Determine the area of tension reinforcement required (A s) for this section given
the characteristic material strengths fyk=460N/mm2 for steel (partial factor of safety for
steel s is 1.15) and fcuk=25N/ mm2 for concrete (partial factor of safety for concrete c
is 1.5). Assume the nominal cover for steel is 30mm.

4. Describe what prestressed concrete is. State the differences between reinforced
concrete and pre-stressed concrete. Explain two methods of prestressing.

5. What are the major advantages and disadvantages of precast concrete? Discuss the
improvements of the semi-precast construction technique comparing to conventional
precast construction methods.

6. Discuss the special features of climb form for core wall construction, and briefly
describe its construction sequence.

7. Discuss the major functional/performance requirements in designing and detailing the

formwork and falsework in the construction of reinforced concrete buildings.

8. Discuss the major factors affecting the lateral pressure exerted by plastic concrete on
vertical formwork. A 200mm thick, 15m in length, and 5.1m high partition wall is
constructed by pouring concrete at temperature of 15oC, the placement rate of OPC
concrete without mixture (density 23.5kN/m3) is 30m3/hour. Calculate the maximum
pressure developed in the concrete form by the ACI method and British CIRIA Report
108 method, respectively. Determine the height to which this maximum pressure will
extend. Draw the diagram of pressure distribution along the height of the wall.

9. The following figures show detailed drawings of the welding connection for steel
elements; all the dimensions are given in mm.
(a) Examine whether there is (are) error(s) in the welding symbols in the
following figure. If there is (are), give the reasons.

(b) Determine the total welding length of the two steel component connections in
the following figure. What is the effective throat thickness of welding?

(c) Explain the meaning of all the welding symbols in the following figure.
10. Describe the major characteristics of composite metal decking floor and composite
steel beam in profiled steel sheet flooring system.

11. In the selection of structural steel for the construction of high-rise buildings in Hong
Kong, what are the factors to consider and what are the treatments for fire protection?
