wanted in its portfolio.

geted malls that appeared to
be neglected by its owners.

While some small retail-
ers left the mall earlier in the

wood are working with new
potential tenants. Chapel
Hill Sports is one of two local
businesses to open. The other
is Unusual Jacks, a new gift
shop. Other national retail-
ers are finalizing agreements,
but havent made officials
announcements, Bannevich
said.
Retail hub
Over the years, the mall
had become the develop-
ment hub of Stark County.
Other retailers and restau-
rants began filling nearby
strip plazas. Today the retail
development sprawls north
toward Akron-Canton Air-
port and south along Whipple
Avenue NW.
While some of the names
have changed, Belden Vil-
lage still holds on to its
three original anchor stores.
Akrons former M. ONeils
Co. department store was
sold to May Co., which was
sold to Macys. Cleveland-
based Higbees was sold to
Dillards. Sears was bought
by Kmart and became Sears
Holdings Corp.
The mall has helped the
area become a shopping des-
tination between Cleveland
and New Philadelphia, said
Steven M. Meeks, presi-
dent of the Jackson-Belden
Chamber of Commerce.
Its a true anchor, Meeks
said of the malls impact on
the shopping district. It
just gives so many people so
much to do.
Bannevich said the malls
parking lots are filled with
vehicles from outside Stark
County, with many vehicles
coming from counties south
of Canton. People who shop
at the Belden Village Mall
also visit other retailers in
the area, she said.
Their success is our suc-
cess, Bannevich said. Its
definitely a regional mall.
The other developments have
grown around us.
