She continued her career
when sound came to movies
and continued acting off and
on in TV and in films into the
1980s.
Gish earned numerous
awards, including Kennedy
Center honors and a special
Academy Award in 1970 for
her superlative artistry and
for distinguished contribu-
tion to the progress of motion
pictures.
According to her biography
by the Massillon Museum:
The time she spent in Massil-
lon affected the people of the
city, and they adopted her and
consider her one of their own.
When the flood control and
viaduct project was completed
in 1951, she was part of the
opening ceremony, and tossed
flowers into the river.
Tommy Henrich
New York Yankees, 1913-2009
Born in Massillon, he
attended St. Mary grade school
and later graduated high school
from St. John in Canton.
He made his mark playing for
the New York Yankees in the
late 1930s and 1940s, where he
was known as Old Reliable.
Primarily a right fielder, he
played alongside Hall of Famer
Joe DiMaggio, the great center
fielder.
He was at his best in the big
games, and he never made a
mistake in the outfield, Bobby
Brown, the former Yankees
third baseman, told The New
York Times in an interview for
Henrichs obituary in 2009.
And as he grew older, he was
very helpful to younger play-
ers. He told them what it was
like to be a Yankee.
A five-time all star, his
career was interrupted for a
three-year military service
stint during World War II.
Henrich played on eight
American League champion-
ship teams and was a member
of seven World Series title
Yankee teams. A lifetime .282
hitter, his best season may have
been 1948, when he batted .308
with 25 homers and 100 runs
batted in.
He will forever be remem-
bered for being part of one of
the most bizarre plays in World
Series history.
In the 1941 Series against the
Brooklyn Dodgers, the Yankees
were up 2 games to 1. They
trailed 4-3 with two outs in the
ninth inning of Game 4. Henrich
was at bat with two strikes. He
swung and missed for strike
three, but catcher Mickey Owen
missed the ball and Henrich
advanced to first base.
New York went on to win
the game 7-4, then claimed the
Series the next game.
James Huberty
Mass murderer, 1942-1984
Born in Canton, he, his wife
and two daughters lived in
Massillon until nine months
before the fateful day of July 18,
1984.
Shortly after 3:30 that after-
noon, the 41-year-old Huberty
entered a McDonalds restau-
rant in San Ysidro, California,
near San Diego, armed with a
long-barreled Uzi, a shotgun
and a handgun. He opened fire
and continued shooting for
nearly 80 minutes. A police
sniper, perched on a roof next
door, finally managed to kill

Huberty.
By that time, Huberty had
killed 21 people, ranging in age
from an infant to senior citi-
zens, and 19 more people were
wounded in the massacre. He
was a loner with a hair-trigger
temper who trained attack dogs
and talked of killing a lot of
people, The Repository wrote
at the time.

recounted Hubertys
intentions:
Before leaving his apartment
in San Ysidro that day, Huberty
reportedly told his wife he was
going to be hunting humans.
His wife, Etna, described him
as a nervous, lonely, unhappy
man, who had been saying
wild things for a long time.
He always did comment on
how he wanted to go through
a lot of people. He had a lot
of guns in his house, and he
always said he wanted to kill
a lot of people, Kenneth
Schuler, Hubertys former
foreman at Canton Babcock &
Wilcox, told The Repository in
1984, a day after the shoot-
ings. We watched him a lot.
We believed him. It was just a
question of when.
John Ertle Jack Oliver
Geophysicist, 1923-2011
Born in Massillon, he grew
up on Ertle Avenue NE, a street
named after his great grand-
father. He attended St. Mary
school and graduated from
Washington High in 1941,
where he played football under
coach Paul Brown.
He went to Columbia Uni-
versity and earned bachelors
and masters degrees in physics,
then his Ph.D. in geophysics.
Known as one of the fathers
of plate tectonics, he, along
with Bryan Isacks and Lynn
Sykes, wrote Seismology and
the New Global Tectonics,
a breakthrough paper on the
subject published in 1968.
Oliver served as chairman
of the geology department at
Columbia University before
heading to Cornell University
to chair its geological sciences
department.
In 1958 and 1959 he was a
seismological advisor on a
nuclear test ban treaty and
was included in negotiations
in Geneva. He won numer-
ous professional honors and
awards and is credited with
writing or co-writing more
than 200 scientific papers and
several books, as he visited
more than 55 countries during
his geophysics research.
Harry Stuhldreher
Football player, coach and admin-
istrator, 1901-1965
Born in Massillon, he went
on to star at Notre Dame, under
legendary coach Knute Rockne.
Slightly built at 5-foot-7
and 151 pounds, he was part
of the famed Four Horse-
men backfield for Notre
Dames unbeaten 1924 team,
a nickname given them by
sports writer Grantland Rice.
Stuhldreher played quarter-
back, with Don Miller and Jim
Crowley at halfbacks and Elmer
Layden at fullback.
He then played briefly in the
American Football League with
Brooklyn.
Stuhldreher went on to
become a very successful
college football coach, com-
piling a 110-87-15 record at
Villanova and Wisconsin. He
followed that with a stint as
athletic director at University
of Wisconsin.
He was elected to the College
Football Hall of Fame in 1958.
