INDIAS TRADE TRENDS
Indias trade has generally grown at a faster rate compared to the growth of GDP over the
past two decades. With the liberalization since 1991 in particular, the importance of international
trade in Indias economy has grown considerably. As a result the ratio of international trade to
GDP has gone up from 14 per cent in 1980 to nearly 20 per cent towards the end of the decade
of 1990s.
In 2015-16, Indias exports were worth USD 262.29 bn, as against USD 310.33 bn in 2014-15,
registering a 15% decline as compared to last year. From 2011-12 to 2015-16, Indias exports
have declined at a compound annual growth rate of 3.78% as against the decline of 6.06% of
Indias imports from World.

SAARC countries.

ROAD AHEAD
It is important to note that India has jumped 16 places in the World Economic Forums global
competitiveness ranking in 2015. This dramatic reversal is largely attributable to the improved
countrys business environment, unveiling several campaigns (such as Make in India, to boost
manufacturing; Skill India, to equip Indians with vocational skills), announcing swifter approvals
for businesses; and moving towards a transparent and stable tax regime.
However, a large number of factors external to the national economic policy operate and affect
a countrys trade in a significant manner. Indias export growth has declined at a compounded
annual growth rate of -3.78% from 2011-12 to 2015-16. This decline is due to contraction in
merchandise sector, while services exports by and large remain robust.
Many of Indias top export markets have been experiencing severe economic slowdown, which
has led to lower demand for imports in those countries. These markets primarily include the UAE,
China and Hong Kong, among others.
Government has set a target of doubling exports to $900 billion by 2020. But the growth in
Indias merchandise export continues to be negative throughout 2015.
SECTORAL GROWTH
Apparel constitutes 40% of Indias exports in textiles, followed by yarn. With the announcement
of new textile policy with the package of Rs 6000 crore, it is envisaged that it will boost
exports and create employment opportunities.
Indias total exports of computer software and services jumped by more than 10 per cent to
$107 billion in 2015-16 compared to $97 billion during the fiscal year 2014-15. By 2020,
Indias electronics imports is estimated to touch $400 billion.
