The infotainment system of the Golf 2013 1 re part

Design and function

Since the introduction of the first infotainment systems, electronics has evolved at a prodigious rate. More and more vehicle systems are electronically
connected to each other, enabling the realization of new information functions and driving aids. Moreover, the media offering informational content and
commercial to leisure have developed and offer an ever-increasing amount of information and services. The user wants to access these services using
the vehicle's electronic equipment naturally from this development. As an interface between these sources and external data such as Internet on the
one hand, and the systems and the occupants of the second vehicle, The infotainment system is of increasing importance. To accomplish this task, it
must have efficient data bus systems that allow different systems to exchange the necessary information. The intuitive user guidance in the system
control, as it has been democratized by smart phones (smartphones), is another development potential of the infotainment system.

This brochure on the infotainment system of the Golf 2013 is at best a snapshot.
New functions and display features will follow, continuously enriching the functionality of the infotainment system of the Golf.

Introduction

The development of the infotainment system

The concept infotainment emerged during the development of the first
Phaeton. The basic concept then was to control various multimedia
functions such as integrated radio and navigation system, the telephone
connection or displaying vehicle data, from a control unit and central
display.

Since then, this concept has been democratized. This means

that there are systems
infotainment not only on the Phaeton and the Passat, but also on all
Volkswagen platforms - including of course the Golf

s518_014
2013.
The first infotainment system on the Phaeton

Since the launch of the Phaeton, automotive electronics, including

information and driver assistance systems, has had an impressive
evolution.

The multiplexing of various vehicle functions and systems has grown

strongly through the various data bus systems.

This larger multiplexing helped turn the emergence of new driver s518_007

assistance systems that combine the most varied vehicle functions. The infotainment system of the Golf 2013

These functions provide the vehicle information to the driver as much

as they unload. This also has the ability to configure the functions of the
vehicle, as with the new option of selecting the driving profile. All these
new systems require an interface point to communicate with the driver.

This interface point is the infotainment system touch screen. All

information converge on this element, where the driver can view
and manage them.

In addition, all devices feature a touch screen. This innovative user

The touchscreen infotainment system
A touch screen has many advantages: One drawback: it was far exert finger pressure on the sensitive area of
for information on the screen, it is not necessary to look for a button on the screen to perform such. the function corresponding to a key
the unit and press it, or to operate a rotary knob - just touch the screen displayed on the touch screen. This was due to the operating principle
directly to select information in question. Additionally, touch screen on which this type of screen is based. Previously, this technology was

it can represent any soft key. The actual keys, physical, the terminal
can be reduced to a minimum.

For more information on the operating mode of the resistive touchscreen and pressure sensitive, see Self-Study Programme 397
"integrated car radio and navigation systems 2007".

Design and operation of a capacitive touchscreen

Capacitive touch screens were previously mainly used on smart phones. These screens do not respond only to pressure, such as resistive touch
screens, but at the touch of a finger.

Design
The surface of a capacitive touch screen is composed of two
conductive strip
overlapping glass plates. These are coated with strips of a transparent
conductive metal oxide. The glass plates are arranged such that the
faces of topped coating are opposite to each other, and that the strips
form a grid. Nonconductive separators prevent the two surfaces from
s518_050 touching.

Glass plate

Glass plate
Separator

conductive strip

7
The modular infotainment platform MIB

Operation
Each grid intersection point functions as a capacitor, because the metal
oxide strips are positioned exactly opposite one another, in the same
manner as the plates of a capacitor. When applying a voltage to the two Capacity

surfaces, an electric field is formed between them.

Field

thus the intersection points have, as a capacitor, a capacitance

defined.

Glass plate Electric

s518_051

applied voltage

The bands that face each form a capacitor at each intersection

point.
When the user touches the surface of the finger eg., Its electric field
affects the electric field at the intersection point where contact occurs,
and therefore the capacity. This causes a change in the voltage at the
ends of the coating tapes. The evaluation electronics determines, from
this variation, the contact point on the touch screen.

Advantages s518_052
The electronics are able to detect multiple contacts at distinct locations.
It reacts faster. The finger contact influences the electric field points of intersection
through the glass plate.
It is not necessary to calibrate the touch screen.

Touch screens do not react with a pencil, a thick glove or prosthesis.

8
The touch screen with approach sensor

From the terminal "Composition Media", the touch screen has an

s518_054
approach sensor. When the sensor detects a hand approaches the
screen, virtual buttons on the screen are enlarged in order to be
selected more easily. If the button is not pressed, the screen returns to
the normal size display virtual keys after a short time.

Highlight buttons

Design
Below the touch screen is a glossy black design bar. This bar contains
four infrared sensors. These are not autonomous electronics - they are
part of the "display unit for display and control unit calculator for

weak infrared radiation. The detection zone is designed such that the

Operation
When a hand moves in the sensor bar detection area, the radiation
emitted by the sensors is reflected by the hand and returns to its

sensors.

The sensor bar then transmits a switching signal to the highlighted

Selecting the driving profile

The basic concept of the selection of the driving profile

The new function of selecting the driving profile clearly illustrates the close link between the modular transverse engine platform MQB modular platform
and infotainment MIB. Performing this function requires an intense exchange of data between the MIB and engine management systems, management
of transmission, management of the axle or other systems (eg. Air conditioner, direction, etc. ).

The basic idea of selecting the driving profile is to allow the driver to
Comfort
make a personal configuration of the vehicle. Some drivers enjoy a
good engine responsiveness to their requests for acceleration and
Normal
suspension rather firm. Others prefer to adopt economical driving or
attach more importance to a smooth and comfortable suspension. Sport

Others may well wish their vehicle adopts a sporting behavior on short
trips but prefer to return to a comfortable ride on longer trips.

The predefined driving profiles

Depending on the vehicle equipment, the driver can select the
following predefined profiles MIB via the terminal:

- Comfort
- Normal
- Sport
- Eco
- Individual

26
Why does the selection of the driving profile appeals to so many vehicle functions?

It is necessary to take into account features such as fire management Fashion sporty driving, it can be expected at higher speeds. The

the different engine settings and the gearbox (especially between Eco Similarly, it is important to consider the air conditioning and engine
and Sport profiles) require the inclusion of different speed ranges. management systems and transmission when it comes to adopt a

Selecting the driving profile

The activation and selection of a driving profile

Activating the function of selecting the driving profile is performed using
the control module for selection of the E592 driving profile. On Golf

2013, it is the first key in the command bar, to the left of the selector
lever. It is connected to the system via the J519 board network
calculator.

When the function is off, the vehicle configuration corresponds to its

state at the factory gate (driving profile Normal) and the E592 control
module is not illuminated. When the driver selects another driving
profile, the control module illuminates to give him confirmation. The
s518_022
master computer driving profile features is the diagnostic interface J533
data bus.

When the function is activated via the control module, the screen of
the controller and the infotainment system display switches to the
display "Driving Mode Selection" (selection of the driving profile).
Depending on the vehicle equipment, the touch screen displays up to
five buttons for selecting the desired profile.

When the driver presses one of the buttons shown on the screen,
the profile is selected and the setting of the vehicle adapted
accordingly.
s518_714

28
When selecting the Individual Profile, a new window appears in which
the functions:
- DCC (adaptive suspension)
- Direction
- Engine
- ACC (remote controller) and
- directional lights can be set individually. The current setting is
displayed on the same line to the right of the function. A drop-down
menu to select a value for each function.

s518_719

The current driving profile is shown in the status bar of the infotainment
system screen, the upper left side. The selected driving profile is
associated with the current key profile. In the absence of a key profile,
the infotainment system uses the settings in effect on the last trip.
Driving profile remains active until the driver changes the key or
another with a different key profile is used.
