Message From Presidente Dayton

Becoming a Master TeacherPreparation and Study Required

Beloved missionaries of El Faro, we have just finished interviewing all 187 of you and have
finished with the sweetest, most wonderful taste in our mouths. It has been such a privilege
to kneel in prayer with you, discuss your area and most promising investigator, read and
discuss important scriptures with you and share our testimonies. Based on this experience, the
spiritual health of the Mission is in excellent condition and the missionaries are stronger, harder
working and more dedicated than ever. How honored we feel just to have association with
you. What a privilege it is to be working side by side in this great latter-day work of bringing
souls to our Savior.

When Hermana Dayton and I prepared to come into the mission, we developed our Vision of
the Mission with its 10 points. These were the 10 elements that we felt were crucial for us to
develop into the kind of missionary we wanted to be ourselves and which we wanted our
missionaries to possess. One of those 10 points was to Become a Master Teacher. Allow me
to review some principles of Preach My Gospel with regards to preparing to be the finest
teacher you can possibly become. First, understand that teaching is central to everything you
do as a missionary. We have been told that, Our purpose is to teach the message of the
Restored Gospel in such a way as to allow the Spirit to direct both the missionaries and those
being taught. Learn to rely on the Spirit to give you what you should say and do. By
studying, developing, and using the teaching skills in PMG you will become a more capable
instrument in the hands of the Lord. The quality and power of your teaching will help others
understand and feel the importance the Restored Gospel has for them. We will never
become Master Teachers unless we understand that EVERY SINGLE LESSON requires study and
preparation for us to be able to deliver what the Lord would have us speak. PMG tells us that
we will know that we are teaching the lessons the way they should be taught when we:
Seek and follow the Spirit as we prepare and teach the lessons. We must always remember
that it is the Spirit who teaches and the Spirit who converts.
Work with our companion to make specific plans for each person we teach.
Focus on the central messages and doctrines we teach.
Adjust the order, length and pace of the lessons according to our investigators needs.
Use and teach regularly from the scriptures. As we do so, our investigators will begin to see us
as men and women of God. Because of that, they will listen more thoroughly and carefully
than before.

Bear testimony frequently. Remember 2 Nephi 33:1 which tells us that when we speak by the
power of the Holy Ghost, He carries our words into the hearts of our investigators.
Make commitment invitations that will challenge our investigators to do things that will grow their
faith and lead to baptism and confirmation.

Every single planned lesson or cita should be associated with a lesson plan that enables you to teach
by the Spirit and helps others make and keep commitments. We start the lesson plan by deciding
what commitment invitations will be given and what baptismal interview questions we can answer in
the course of the lesson. This means that you must understand thoroughly the doctrines you will be
teaching. Personal study time is a good time to review and read up on the doctrines which you will
be teaching. When we truly know the doctrines, the lesson can just flow because of our ability to
teach and answer questions.

Next, it is crucial that we organize and summarize what we will teach in the lesson. You must focus
on the scriptures you will use, the specific doctrines that will be taught and the baptismal interview
questions. It would be wise to have a Question Bank based on questions asked in previous
discussions. Write out answer to those questions and use them as you prepare for lessons on the
same topic. Prepare to answer any objections or misunderstandings. It would also be a good idea
to have a collection of personal experiences from you and other people whom you know or know
about that you may draw upon during the lesson. The use of examples, metaphors or analogies will
also enhance your lesson. Make your lesson plan simple and brief. Constantly be evaluating your
lesson plan and when you have developed it to a very high level, it may be used repeatedly. It is
always a good idea to review the lesson and its specific subtopics the day of the planned cita. Your
lesson should be done in a humble but inspiring way, teaching the principles smoothly, and then
inviting them to commit to a course of action which will build their faith.

As you study doctrine and create lesson plans, identify areas where you can adjust your approach to
meet potential needs. You might ask the question, What is the area of greatest concern for them
right now? Then you can adjust your teaching approach to meet the needs of those you are
teaching. We should focus on the ultimate goal of helping those we teach grow their faith and
desire to be baptized and confirmed members of Christs true Church.

After each lesson, as recently instructed, TAKE FIVE to review the lesson, what you did well, what
didnt go so well, what they seem to understand, how they reacted to a teaching they werent
prepared for, and how they reacted to a commitment invitation to change something they have
been doing which violates the law of God. We should constantly be evaluating our lessons and
making changes to improve them. As always, the lessons we teach should be simple, clear, easy to
understand and aided by visual aids, drawings or pamphlets which supplement what we have
taught.

Preparing to teach the lessons is crucial to becoming polished, smooth teachers. As you teach,
make sure you speak loud enough for them to hear you, speak slowly and vary vocal inflection to
remain interesting. Look them in the eye as you testify and show some passion and energy as you
teach. Dont hesitate to use long pauses to let the Spirit work on them or to help them think about
what they have just learned. Teach for understandingdont just deliver the doctrine as though you
were dropping off laundry. Ask inspired questions and wait for answers. Observe facial expressions
to see if they are confused or are disagreeing. It is so crucial they understand the simple, beautiful
principles of the Doctrine of Christ. May all of us strive to be better teachers by preparation and
study that the Holy Spirit may work effectively through us to touch hearts and thus bring about
conversion.

Message From Hermana Dayton

Negativity Fast

Dear Missionaries,

President and I enjoyed meeting with you this past month in zone conference and personal
interviews. We felt very inspired and lifted as we visited with you about your families and
discussed how you are doing on your mission. We feel grateful and blessed by the opportunity
to serve with you in the Spain Barcelona Mission.

We are very excited about the commitment we have all made to be more positive. We pray
daily that the 21 day Negativity Fast is going well for each of you and hope that as
companions you are able to help each other recognize when there is negative thinking. We
hope you will be able to identify the type of negative thinking it is and then have an action
plan to overcome those thoughts. At each of the zone conferences we heard ways to stop or
change a negative thought. Ideas shared were to replace a negative thought with a hymn,
a memorized scripture a prayer or an uplifting quote. One missionary says he repeats,
Always, always, always remember Him. The ideas I shared were to speak the words, "Stinkin
Thinkin", "That's Great", "The struggle keeps us strong" or "We create our own weather." Other
ideas suggested were to write daily in our journals, think of all we have to be grateful for, to
create and then list some power statements or I Am statements first thing in the morning to lift
our spirits. I love our recitation found in 3 Nephi 5:13, "I AM a disciple of Jesus Christ, the son of
God. I have been called of him to declare his word among his people, that they might have
everlasting life." Now that is one very inspiring I Am statement!

In Adjusting to Missionary Life we learn to "talk back to negative thinking". Some examples
they give are these:
"I hate getting up so early" to "I can do this. Once I get up and start moving I'll feel better."
"That lesson was a disaster" to "Some lessons go better than others. It's good that I want to
improve."
Just a reminder, the power of positive thinking can bless the lives of most missionaries. While it
may not be as effective for those who are going through a clinical depression, it is of value for
most people. If a person is experiencing situational depression, he/she may be struggling
because of a difficult circumstance and feel some depression. Most people with situational
depression can refocus and redirect their thoughts.

We love you and will continue to pray that each of us will train our minds to think positively. We
know creating this habit early in life can literally change your life!

Honestly I've been working SO
hard and trying to be as
obedient as I can and putting
everything I can into the work.
Well this past week we had a

working with them and put all
