INTRODUCTION

Democracy is the active involvement of citizens in a country. It allows the people to participate
and acknowledge their opinions in what at how government officials will work. It is a situation
which everyone is treated equally and has equal rights.

In a democratic country, mass media play a big role in peoples point of view. Television, radio,
newspapers, and the Internet have become the daily source of information. Media are the
gatekeepers of democracy, like in elections and party politics. It also enable the governed
Filipinos to communicate with their governors or leaders. It shows that media is a powerful
instrument to manipulate the minds of each one of us.

The function of the media resides as a surveillance, to maintain the monitoring of the
performance of the government officials. Also, agenda-setting function is the second role of the
media, the ability to set the public agenda by prioritizing and projecting, in a positive or negative
manner, the media performs the powerful tools to influence the public.

The power of media has its different forms like television and radio tend to influence the less
privileged and less powerful who are most frequent clients of these forms of media. It showed
that print media can have much influence on the political process because they are hard copies
which can be read directly by officials of the government and society. Meanwhile, electronic
media may be less powerful, they are more interfering as they shove themselves upon active or
passive viewers while reading requires more attention or engagement, effort and focus.

There are complications arise when the interests of media owners conflict with public interests.
The three kinds of media control or ownership are: public, semipublic and private. In public
ownership the government controls the media. Semipublic control exhibited when they are
privately and publicly financed and controlled at the same time. The last one is the private
control of the media refers to ownership of media operations by individuals or private
corporations.

There are relationship of media between politics that is dependent with each other. The
government communicate to public through media, whereas the media builds the good or bad
impression of government officials to public.

The media showed an evolution in Philippine history namely: The Awakening: A national press,
The Growth: A pragmatic press, The Coming of Age: A conservative press, The Crisis: A
manipulated press, The Redemption: A cathartic press and, The Metamorphosis: More than a
global press.
