General Course Information:

The fourth grade class will be learning fifth grade benchmarks in mathematics.
An emphasis will be placed on science and technology. We will be taking advantage of
the computer lab and library often, to enhance synthesis of new subject matter, and use
every period to learn how to research and apply information in different ways. Students
will work independently and in teams to problem solve, and collaborate on projects.

Course Goals

By the end of the year students will be able to defend answers through textual
support, think independently, and learn to write and communicate effectively. They will
also learn the how to cooperate in team situations, become a part of an educational
community of learners, and have a greater understanding of the responsibility they have
in their own educational successes.

Course Rules and & Policies

Course and Classroom Rules

Do what your teacher says immediately

Keep hands, feet and all other related objects to yourself
Never hurt anyone on the inside or outside
Turn all completed assignments in on time
Bring all needed materials to class

Course Expectations and Assumptions

The perquisites for fourth grade are that the student is able to add, subtract, and write in
complete sentences. Additionally it is important that the student has learned to write in
cursive. If any of these essential skills is lacking, the student and the students parents
will need to put forth additional work and agree to participate in tutoring in order to
ensure that the student is successful during academic year.

Discipline Procedures and Consequences

I will be working within the standardized guidelines of the DPS system as set forth by
school.

Textbook and classroom set policy

As a general rule students will not need to take textbooks home. However, there may
be times when this will become necessary. Every student is responsible for the
textbooks assigned him/her. If the text book is damaged the students parents will be
responsible for covering the cost of the damages and, this may result in the loss of the
required book deposit.

Grading

The grading system is as follows.

90-100% A

80-89% B

70-79% C

65-69% D

Below 65 F

Class Load Percentages

Students will be graded according to their ability to demonstrate understanding of the

material covered in class. These are the percentages on which their final grade is
based

Formative Section Tests (During Instruction): 30%

Summative Tests (End of Unit, Semester): 30%

Class work (Daily Independent): 15%

Reports, Projects, Foldables, and Journals: 10%

Homework: 15%

Final Total: 100%

No Name Assignments

No name assignments will be held in a designated area until you come to claim it. You
will lose 5% on each assignment you do not put your name on. Trust me; you want to
learn to do this now. As you get older it will be even more important.

Homework Policy

You will be given a homework packet once a week.

Homework is important!!! Homework, is important. HOMEWORK IS IMPORTANT! I do

not assign homework to torture nine and ten year old girls an boys. The purpose of
homework is to ensure that you apply what you have learned in school. You will be at
home; you will have to think about your answers. You are for the most part, on your
own, using your wonderful brain. Please ask if you need help understanding something.
Homework is giving your mind time to register and pull apart information. (Synthesis)
Homework is the special time in which you prove to yourself that you can defeat
educational challenges. You can take that information and use it in different ways!
(Application) Besides if you do not turn in your homework you will face serious
consequences as outlined here

1st: You need to know I do not give full credit for late homework. Not ever. Never.

2nd: You will still have to do your homework, except now I will begin to take points away
from you for tardiness at the rate of 10% a day.

3rd: I will call your parents!

4th: If you continue to miss homework your grade will suffer and you will write a letter to
me and others who care about you explaining why you are not completing your
homework.

Excused Absences and Make Up Work

It is important not to miss school if possible. If you must be absent, you will need to
make your work up the next weekend and turn it in on the following Monday. If you do
not do this you will lose 10% a day on each assignment you are turning in late.
Extra Credit

I am a fair and generous teacher. As such, you will have opportunities to receive extra
credit. However, extra credit should not be seen as a last ditch effort to save a failing
grade. Extra credit will be given on occasion and is optional. Extra credit will have due
date and it must be turned in by that time.

Having written this syllabus at the beginning of the year, please understand that it is
subject to change according to the needs of the classroom and teacher. I will notify
parents if any changes are made.
