Information Technology in Ship Design and Production

Team Project
Estimation of Ship Resistance with empirical Hollenbach Method

Motivation

Within the design process the ships propulsion power is a crucial information. Empirical methods
have been developed to get a rough estimate about the power needed. The advantage of empirical
methods is the fast calculation time and the little number of parameters needed. Nevertheless some
geometrical information is needed to apply theses methods.

In this project a software tool should be developed1 which calculates the needed power delivered
PD based on an ship hull form representation given as STL. The Hollenbach-Method should be
used, which is described in the attached paper2 . The delivered power should be calculated over a
speed range given as input.

Any data which cannot be extracted from the geometry should be given as input parameter. The
input should be given either via a graphical user interface, as command line arguments or read in
from file.

Input

STL-Representation of the ship hull form

Speed range v
Necessary input parameters for the method (e.g. Configuration, propeller diameter or propel-
lerefficiency 0 )

Output

Table in a comma seperated file over the speed range

Columns for: Fn , CR , CF , CT , RT , PE , PD
Diagrams of CR , CF , CT and PD over the speed range

Report

The report should explain in detail the used methodology. Furthermore the implementation should
be documented in a way that the functions implemented including the overall architecture of the
program developed with the data structure can be reproduced.
1
Any programming language can be used for the implementation. In case of no preferences C# should be applied.
