Vapor Compression Cycle

1. Compressor Work ; Wc

Wc = m (h2- h1)

Where:

m = mass flow rate, kg/s

h1 = enthalpy entering the compressor, kj/kg

h2 = enthalpy leaving the compressor, kj/kg

2. Volume flow rate Suction; V1

V1 = mv1

Where:

m3
V1 = specific volume of vapor, kg

3. Heat Rejected in the Condenser, QR

QR = m (h2 h3)

Where:

h3 = enthalpy leaving the condenser, kj/kg

4. Enthalpy Leaving the Expansion valve, h4

h4 = (hf + Xhfg)

Where:

x = quality or weight of flash gas per unit weight of refrigerant

5. Refrigerating Capacity, QA :

QA = m (h1- h4) Kw

Note:

1 ton of refrigeration (TOR) = 3.5167 kW

Thus;

m ( h 1h 4 ) 1
QA = 3 . 5167 TO= COP

6. Coefficient of Performance, COP:

The coefficient of performance is the ration of the refrigerating effect to the compressor

work.
QA h1h 4
COP = Wc or COP = h 2h1

7. Power per ton of refrigeration, P(ton)

Compressor Power
P(ton) =
Tons of Refrigeration

3 . 5167 m ( h 2h 1 )
P(ton) =
h 1h 4

8. Power per kW of Refrigeration, P(kW )

1 Wc h 2h1

9. Volume Flow per Ton of Refrigeration; , V

ton V 1' m3
V = = TOR = ston

10. Piston Displacement , V (D)

Piston displacement is the volume swept through by the pistons in their suction strokes

per unit time.

V D2
, (D) = (
4 )LNn

Where:
D = bore or diameter of cylinder
L = length of stroke
N = speed
n = no. of cylinder
Note; For Double acting Compressor
2
V (D) == ( D ) L N n x 2

11. Actual Volumetric Efficiency, e(va )

The actual volumetric efficiency is the ratio of the volume flow rate at suctions to the

piston displacement,

V 1'
e(va) =
VD

12. Clearance Volumetric Efficiency, e(vc)

The clearance volumetric efficiency is given by;
P2
V1
, e(vc) = 1 + c c ( P 11/k or , e(vc) = 1 + c c ( V 2

V 1'
Note: c = V2
Where:
c = clearance
V1 = specific volume at suction
V2 = specific volume at discharge

13. Compression Efficiency, , e(c) :

The compression efficiency is the ration of the isentropic compressor work to the actual

compressor work.

Wc
e(c) =
Wa

14. Mechanical Efficiency, , e(m) :

The mechanical efficiency if the ratio of the indicated power to the brake power.

Pi
e(m) =
Pb

Where:

Pi = indicated power

Pb = brake power
