Collector tractors - rusted,
dented, but they run

Garvin Carstens, rural
Donnelly, is a collector of
old tractors. He owns ten,
plus a couple of antique
D6 Caterpillar crawlers.
He doesnt restore them to
mint condition for shows,
but he has purchased a
couple that were restored
by others. Some are rusty
and dented, but they all
run, still have their origi-
nal parts and come with a
story about where each one
came from.
For instance, his latest
purchase is a John Deere D
he saw sitting on the side
of the road when he was
driving to a wedding in
Montana.
It was calling to me,
take me home, Cartsens
jokes. He stopped, made a
deal, and after the wedding,
went home to get a trailer
and brought the tractor
home.
It was just like one I
drove when I was ten years
old.
Carstens was born and
raised on a farm northwest
of Minot, North Dakota.
Once he grew up he moved
to Hancock and worked for a
farmer for a couple of years
before joining the Army.
While in the Army he was
stationed in Germany and
was a truck driver, a skill he
would employ for over 30
years in civilian life. When
he was discharged he worked
around Hancock for a few
more years before renting a
farm south of Morris to try
farming on his own.
I went broke, so I start-
ed trucking, he says simply.

farmed about 40 acres and
had an old McCormick WD
9 that was running on only
three cylinders, he recalls.
I said, we can fix that. He
sold it to me and we hauled
it home. That was the start
of it.
Carstens still has that
old tractor as well as a num-
ber of John Deeres, including
an H he got from Canada, and
a McCormick Farmall Super
M he is especially proud of.
It belonged to a fellow I
worked with at one time. The
engine was stuck, but we got
it going and it turned out to
be a pretty good tractor. The
only thing I changed was I put
a padded seat on it instead of
that cold, hard metal seat.
Carstens wife passed
away a number of years ago
and he lives on his Donnelly
farm he sold to his daughter.
Another daughter lives in
Pennock, Minnesota and is
married, handily, to a diesel
mechanic. His son is a plumb-
er in Austin, Minnesota. He
belongs to an antique power
club in Alexandria and you
can see one of his tractors
at an upcoming exhibition at
Viking Plaza. He also enjoys
driving his tractors in local
parades and seldom misses
the Old Settlers Reunion

bypass graft [CABG] or bypass
surgery) to treat blocked arteries,

To prepare for bypass surgery,
the clinician takes healthy blood
vessels from other parts of your
body and uses them to bypass the
blockage in your heart. There are
two main methods: the conven-
tional open vein harvesting (OVH)
technique, which requires a long

healing complications, and EVH,
which is performed via a minimally
