In the 18th century, Finnish recruits serving in the Samuel Besprosvanni to Sam Vanni
Swedish army were given short Swedish surnames such
as Trn, Malm and Brun. This was because Swedish of- Artur Blomberg to Artur Wuorimaa
cers found Finnish names dicult to pronounce. Some Eino Blomros to Eino Kilpi
of these names were later nnicized to Trni, Malmi, etc.
A notable event in nnicization was the centenary, in Martti Buddn to Martti Vlikangas
1906, 100 years after the birth of the philosopher and Kaarlo Collan Kaarlo Linkola
statesman Johan Vilhelm Snellman. Author Johannes
Linnankoski encouraged Finns to give up their Swedish Rolf Durchman to Rolf Turkka
names on 12 May, Snellmans birthday. During 1906 and
1907 about 70,000 Finns changed their names.[1] Veikko Fennander Veikko Vennamo
