LESSON PLAN on Trigonometry

Learning Competency: The learner illustrates angles of elevation and angles of depression
Competency Code: M9GE-IVd-1
Specific Objectives:
1. Define angles of elevation and angles of depression.
2. Distinguish between angle of elevation and angle of depression
3. Applies trigonometric ratios to solve for angles of elevation and angles of
depression.

Lesson: Angles of Elevation and Angles of Depression

Duration: 60 mins
Materials: Laptop, Projector, chalk, chalkboard

Procedure:
1. Introductory activity: Pose this question and sketch for the class to draw their
interest.

Suppose you are on top of a

building and looking down at
a certain person standing by
the street, do you think its
possible to tell how far is that
person from the building?
How?

2. Activity: Look Up or Look Down!

Directions: Follow the steps below and answer the questions that follow.
Use a tape measure to measure the distance between your eyes and feet.
Move around the room and find an object that is at the exact height as your eyes
and label a picture.
Go outside the room and make an illustration of: activity1 sheet (link)
3. Analysis
Ask the learners these questions:
1. How did you find the activity?
2. Describe the illustration or picture you have created from the activity
3. What mathematical concepts did you learn from the activity? When you look up,
is there an angle formed? What about when you look down?
4. Do you think you can directly measure the height, the distance of the object you
have listed in the activity?
4. Abstraction
Solving real-life problems involving right triangles requires knowledge of
some significant terms. Let us define them.

Line of Sight is an imaginary line that connects the eye of an

observer to the object being observed.

Angle of elevation - is the angle formed from the horizontal to

the line of sight of the observer to the object above.

Angle of depression is the angle formed from the horizontal

to the line of sight of the observer to the object below.

Let the class watch a show video clip about angles of elevation and angles of
depression. (Video)

At this point, give the learners an interactive quiz on identifying scenarios as to

angle of elevation or angle of depression.
Activity: interactive quiz (link)

Activity: Identify Me!

Direction: In the following figures, identify the segment that represents the line of
sight, and identify the angle formed whether angle of elevation or angle of
depression.

Activity2 (link)

Questions:
1. How did you identify the line of sight, angle of elevation and angle of
depression?
2. What ideas have you learned from this activity?
3. Do you think you can use these ideas in your daily life?
4. Give and illustrate at least two situations in your life involving angle of elevation
and angle of depression.
Let us apply trigonometric ratios to solve situations involving angle of elevation and
angle of depression.
Let the class watch another short video about the application of angles of
elevation/depression. (Video)

Ex. 1. A tower is 15.24 m high. At a certain distance away from the tower, an
observer determines that the angle of elevation to the top of it is 41. How far is the
observer from the base of the tower?

15.24 m
15.24

41

Solution: x

A trigonometric ratio often helps us set up an

equation, which can then be solved for the
missing measurement. If two legs of the triangle
are part of the problem, then it is a tangent ratio.
If the hypotenuse is part of the problem, then it is
either a sine or cosine ratio.

Ex. 2 An airplaine is flying at a height of 4 kilometers above the ground. The

distance along the ground from the airplane to the airport is 6 kilometers. What is th
angle of depression from the airplane to the airport?

2. An observer in a lighthouse 48.8 m above sea level saw two vessels moving
directly towards the lighthouse. He observed that the angles of depression are
42 and 35. Find the distance between the two vessels, assuming that they are
coming from the same side of the tower.

6. Assessment

Give a 10-item multiple choice test. (hyperlinked to the quiz)

7. Assignment
Draw the diagram and show your solution.

A 12 meter high post casts a 19-meter shadow. Find the angle of elevation to the sun.

2. The angle of elevation from a boat to the top of a 92-meter hill is 12. How far is
the boat from the base of the hill.

3. From the top of a cliff 280 meters high, the angle of depression of a boat is 25.
How far from the base of the cliff is the boat?
