Friends of Mount Majura July work party

Conserving and enhancing our beloved bushland is the continuous theme of Friends of Mount Majura work parties
on the third Sunday each month. In July, we will continue weeding horehound from the paddock adjacent to the
lower Hackett reservoir, and digging holes for plantings on “National Tree Day” in August.
Join us if you can at the Hackett reservoir off Rivett and French Streets on Sunday, 18 July, from 12 noon to
4pm; come for the whole time or just an hour and choose your favourite activity.
Please bring a trowel and rubber household gloves with long cuffs for the weeding, and wear densely woven
clothing to minimize attachment of seed burrs. If you prefer digging holes, please bring a mattock or spade if you
have one. We will provide tea and coffee, and some weeding and digging tools will be available. For enquiries or
more information, email admin@majura.org or phone 6247 7515.

Warning on baby slings

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is investigating the need for a safety code
for baby slings, particularly for babies younger than four months. Their action was prompted by a recall of
baby slings in the USA that were reportedly linked to the deaths of three infants. Unlike a baby carrier or
pouch, that places the infant in an vertical position, a sling plcaces carries it wrapped around, or across, the
body. US authorities and consumer organisations have raised concerns about the safety of baby slings,
particularly that they can be a suffocation hazard or cause injuries if babies fall out of a sling. US authorities
are investigating at least 14 deaths associated with baby slings, and 22 reports of injury resulting from
falls from lings. The ACCC has advised parents to be cautious when using infant slings for babies younger
