Using Thinking Processes
for analysis and developing solutions

As with any body of knowledge,

over the years the TOC Thinking Processes
have been undergoing continuous development
and upgrade.

Upgrade of mechanics of
Clouds, Assumptions and UDEs:

In the process of development and upgrade of TP, deeper

understanding of the mechanics of the central TP tools developed.

Deeper understanding
of mechanics

In this presentation we will look only at the few of the issues:

Structure and purpose of the Cloud

Why D MUST endanger C, and D MUST endanger B
Why it is wrong to try and use the Cloud for decision-making
When it is right and when wrong to put your solution on one
side of the Cloud
Why it is wrong to put an UDE on one side and a DE on the
other side of the Cloud
Why it is wrong to say that the assumption behind the straight
arrow is It is the ONLY WAY
Why it is wrong to say that the assumption behind the conflict
D-D is that the two cannot be done at the same time or cannot
be separated in time/space, etc

Structure and purpose of the Cloud

www.tocpractice.com 32nd International Conference of the TOC Practitioners Alliance - TOCPA

Does the way the Cloud is
usually presented impact the
perception of its purpose?

As a rule, a Cloud is presented like that:

B D

of the Cloud
It is often overlooked that in fact the PURPOSE of Cloud is to
express this relationship:

Why it is wrong to try
and use the Cloud
for decision-making

www.tocpractice.com 32nd International Conference of the TOC Practitioners Alliance - TOCPA

The Cloud is NOT for
decision making!
We cannot use a Cloud for making a decision between the
two options that the Cloud presents,
because in the Cloud to decide would mean to choose
either D or D.
But it is exactly why the Cloud exists: we use the Cloud
when we ARE UNABLE TO CHOOSE between the two
options.
Our inability to choose is caused by sensing or being
clearly aware of the fact that by achieving one necessary
condition for A, we endanger the other necessary
condition. Hence, we endanger A.
We use the Cloud NOT to make a decision: D or D, but to
find a solution.
www.tocpractice.com 32nd International Conference of the TOC Practitioners Alliance - TOCPA
When it is right and when wrong
to put your solution on one side
of the Cloud

www.tocpractice.com 32nd International Conference of the TOC Practitioners Alliance - TOCPA

Your solution on one side
of the Cloud
By putting your solution on one side of the Cloud you announce
loud and clear that your solution is BAD for the system
it endangers a legitimate need of the system that is a Necessary
condition to achieve one of the systems objectives

Why it is wrong to put an UDE on
one side and a DE on the other side
of the Cloud

www.tocpractice.com 32nd International Conference of the TOC Practitioners Alliance - TOCPA

Putting UDE in D
and DE in D
At the very beginning of developing a process of explaining an UDE
through a Cloud, the recommendation was to put an UDE in D, and a
Desired Effect (DE), an opposite to an UDE, in D.
However, what we will get is the same we will announce that a
DESIRED EFFECT ENDANGERS A VALID AND IMPORTANT NEED OF
THE SYSTEM.
Then how can it be a DESIRED effect?

Why it is wrong to say that the
assumption behind the straight
arrow is It is the ONLY WAY

www.tocpractice.com 32nd International Conference of the TOC Practitioners Alliance - TOCPA

The meaning of the
straight arrow in the Cloud
The MEANING of the straight arrow in a Cloud is that the entity at the tail of the
arrow is the Necessary Condition to achieve the effect at the tip of the arrow.
Necessary Condition by default means that it is THE ONLY WAY.
An Assumption is NOT the repetition of what has been already established! An
assumption is what explains THE GROUNDS ON WHICH BE BELIEVE THAT THERE IS
NECESSITY LOGIC BETWEEN THE TWO ENTITIES!

is the only way

is important
Y is necessary
is absolutely vital
X

www.tocpractice.com 32nd International Conference of the TOC Practitioners Alliance - TOCPA
Why it is wrong to say that the
assumption behind the conflict D-D
is that the two cannot be done at
the same time or cannot be
separated in time/space, etc.

www.tocpractice.com 32nd International Conference of the TOC Practitioners Alliance - TOCPA

The meaning of the
conflict arrow D-D

The MEANING of the conflict arrow D-D D

is that the one who has recorded the
One of the two
Cloud believes that the two entities
conflictng actions or
recorded in D and D CANNOT BE DONE
wants
AT THE SAME TIME and within the
context of this specific situation they CONFLICT
cannot be separated in time/space/etc. D

The other one of

To offer such statements as
the two conflicting
assumptions does not add anything to
actions or wants

OF THE TWO ENTITIES are IN CONFLICT.
