SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

LESSON PLAN
Probability and Statistics
S.Y. 2016 2017
Quarter Number: 3
Semester: 2
A. CONTENT The learner demonstrates understanding of key
STANDARD concepts of random, variables and probability
distribution
B. PERFORMACE The learner is able to apply appropriate random
STANDARD variable for a given real-life problem such as in
decision making and game of chance, etc.
C. LEARNING The learner illustrates random variable
COMPETENCIE (continuous or discrete)
S Distinguishes between discrete and continuous
random variable
Find possible values of a random variable
Illustrates a probability distribution for discrete
random variable and its properties

D. SPECIFIC With various learning activities and corrective

LEARNING feedback, the Grade 11 students with at least 85%
OUTCOMES accuracy are expected to do the following:
a. Illustrate a random variable
b. Classify random variables as discrete or
continuous; and
c. Find the possible values of a random
variable
E. TIME 2 hours F2F
ALLOTMENT 3 hours online
F. MATERIALS Learning activity sheets, marker

H. PROCEDURE MOTIVATION/INTRODUCTION:
The class is going to play a game by tossing a fair
coin like hantak. The objective of the game is to
list at least 5 heads and at most 3 tails. The first
pair who could do it after 5 toss will be declared as
the winner of the game.
Review prior knowledge on the following concepts:
Probability, sample space, population, experiment,
random variable
1
LESSON FLOW:
1. Check and briefly discuss the preliminary
concepts of probability and statistics
( Assignment)
2. Activity 1 Tossing three coins
Suppose three coins are tossed. Let Y be the
random variable representing the number the
tails that occur. Find the values of the random
variable Y. Complete the table below.
Possible outcomes Value of the random
variable Y (number of
tails)

3. Activity 2 Drawing balls from an Urn

Two balls are drawn in succession without
replacement from an urn containing 5 red
balls and 6 blue balls. Let Z be the random
variable representing the number of blue
balls. Find the values of the random
variable Z. Complete the table below.
Possible outcomes Value of the random
variable Z (number of
blue balls)

4. Suppose an experiment is conducted to

determine the distance that a certain type
of car will travel using 10 litres of gasoline
over a prescribed test course. If the
distance is a random variable X, list all the
possible distances or values of random
variable X.
Possible outcomes Value of the random
variable X (number of
distances)

2
5. Asks the students with the following
questions and elicit the idea on random
variable, discrete random variable, and
continuous random variable.
a. Based on the activities presented, how
can you describe or define a random
variable?
b. Define operationally what a discrete
random variable is based on Activities 1
and 2.
c. Compare the set of possible outcomes in
activities 1 and 2 to activity 3, what can
you conclude base on the counting?
d. Define what a continuous random
variable operationally.
6. Generalization
What is a random variable?
How can you differentiate from a discrete
random variable from continuous random
variable?
EVALUATION:
1. Four coins are tossed. Let Z be the random
variable representing the number of heads
occur. Find the values of the random variable
Z.
2. A shipment of five containers two those are
slightly defective. If the retailer receives three
of these computers at random , list all the
elements of the sample space S using the
letters D and N for the defective and non-
defective computers respectively. To each
sample point assign a value x of the random
variable X representing the number of
computers purchased by the retailer which are
slightly defective.
3. Let T be a random variable giving the number
of heads plus the number of tails in three
tosses of a coin. List the elements of the
sample space S for the three tosses of the
coin and assign a value to each sample point.
4. Classify the following random variable as
discrete or continuous.
a. The number of defective computers
produced by a manufacturer
3
b. The weight of newborns each year in a
hospital
c. The number of siblings in a family in a
region
d. The amount of paint utilized in a building a
project
e. The number of dropout in a school district
for a period of 10 years
f. The speed of car
g. The number of female athletes
h. The time needed to finish the test
i. The amount of sugar in a cup of coffee
j. The number of people who are playing
LOTTO each day
ENRICHMENT:
From a box containing 4 black balls and 2 green
balls, 3 balls are drawn in succession. Each ball is
placed in the box before the next draw is made. Let
G be a random variable representing the number of
green balls that occur. Find the values of the
random variable G.
HOMEWORK:
