Agriculture Specialist

Job Summary of our Agriculture Specialist

Category: Entry-level, Full-time International Staff
Reports to: the Chief Project Officer
Location: Banjul, Gambia, West Africa with opportunities to travel in Africa and Europe

The Agriculture Specialist is primarily responsible for the provision of farm management services
to our client/s under his/her portfolio. He/she will develop and manage all aspects of farm
production fields including growing organic vegetables, peanut, peanut, rice, mango, and flower;
managing farming systems and farm workers. The Agriculture Specialist has primary responsibility
for the planning, coordination, and implementation of all work activities at client farms under
his/her portfolio. He/she will work closely with individuals on the Business Development and
Project Management teams.

Specific Responsibilities

I. Farming System Development and Implementation

a. Coordination with Tefa Staff and its teams including monthly farm reports
b. Produce annual field plans
c. Develop and maintain Tefa standards of production to ensure the highest quality
produce
d. Maintain farm infrastructures and landscape
e. Cooperate with development partners
f. Infrastructure planning, creation and maintenance
g. Irrigation planning and implementation
h. Soil building program including composting
i. Develop, implement and document agricultural production standards
II. Crop Production
a. Seed ordering and material acquisition
b. Planning and implementation of weekly planting schedule
c. Insect and weed control, fertility monitoring and general field observation
d. Cultivation activities
e. Plan weekly harvest schedule and harvest
III. Farm Supervision
a. Supervision of farm workers and farm resources
b. Integration of farms with other programs
c. Participate in long-term farm development planning
d. Coordinate produce needs with marketing program

Qualifications:

1. Bachelors degree in Agriculture or Agricultural Engineering

2. Demonstrated ability to work independently
3. Demonstrated farm planning ability
4. Demonstrated ability on crop production using organic/biodynamic principles
5. Excellent command of English, ability to speak French is an added advantage but not a
requirement
6. Strong organizational skills, including effective time management and prioritization of
competing demands/multiple deadlines
7. Ability to manage projects with minimal oversight, make effective inquiries, identify
relevant facts, and translate technical details into concise web and applications
8. Ability to give and receive constructive criticism
9. Collaborative orientation
