BATTLE BOTS
Please complete the following steps and calculations in order to develop your design for your
battle bot.
1. Problem and parameters in order to build your battle bot:
a. You may only use 50 popsicle sticks to build your entire structure.
b. The base of your structure must fit into a 144 in 2 square.
c. You may use 2 force multipliers to control your robot.
2. Research: Please document the websites you used (even videos) in order to inform your
design. Record your ideas in your notebook.
3. Analyze your design: respond to these questions!!!
a. Are you using a hydraulic or a pneumatic system?

b. Why did you decide on hydraulic/pneumatic?

c. Why did you decide NOT to use the other system?

d. Is your system going to be open or closed? Why?

4. Calculate the output distance of your force multipliers. Use the chart below and
determine how much control you will have with different combinations of syringes:
System 1 Area Area Ratio Distance
Input
Size:_____mL 2 inches
Output
Size:_____mL

System 2 Area Area Ratio Distance

Input
Size:_____mL 2 inches
Output
Size:_____mL
WHY are you using the combinations of syringes? How does the combination help you
control your robot the best?

5. Is the fluid you are using compressible or incompressible? What is the advantage of
your fluid?

6. Develop and finalize your design:

a. Record designs you like in your notebook.
b. You will need to show how your design evolves as you are working by documenting
it in your notebook.
7. As you build, please create a drawing in your notebook and include the following:
a. What are your dimensions?
b. How did you attach your pumps?
c. What did you use to create the pivot points?
8. BUILD your robot!
a. Document changes you need to make as you go on your drawing.
b. Please explain why you made the changes you made.
9. Test and Evaluate:
a. How far can you launch something with your completed robot?

b. How far can you tip it backward before it tips over?

c. What is the range of motion that the arm has (use a ruler to measure how far it can
turn, how far it can lift up and down)?

d. How many popsicle sticks you used:_______________

e. Approximate size (area) of your base:________________

10. Prepare for Battle! Who wins?

a. What criteria are we going to use to determine the winner?
b. Ideas:
o Winner knocks the other bot off the table!
o Most hits on the other bot!
o Other ideas:
11. Points! How are we assigning points to the battle? Record it so we know who wins!

12. Data collection: Please record the information in your notebook for each battle!

Group members OBSERVATIONS Criteria 1(pts) Criteria 2(pts) Total (points)

13. Analysis and Results: For all of the robots.

a. Please SHOW your calculations for the winners in order to make sure it is
UNDISPUTED (no argument because you have data to back you up!).
b. Use your OBSERVATIONS to explain the robots performance (your robot).
c. What is the BEST ROBOT produced by your class? Use your OBSERVATIONS to
support this.
d. What recommendations could you make for another group to help them improve the
work they have presented?
14. FINAL CONCLUSIONS: This is where you summarize your OWN robot performance and use
your OWN results for your evidence.
e. Explain what you did well in building the robot.
f. Explain a problem you encountered and how you solved it.
g. If you had to do it again, what would you do differently?
