A new Public Policy Polling survey of both landline and cell phone users conducted
March 7-9 finds that Democrat Manka Dhingra holds a solid lead over Republican
incumbent Dino Rossi leading up to the November election for State Senate in the 45th
Legislative District. Dhingra, a King County Senior Deputy Prosecutor, tops Rossi 46/40,
with 14% of voters unsure of whom they will vote for in the fall. Dhingras lead over
political veteran Rossi, who was the Republican nominee for Governor in both 2004 and
2008 and the nominee for U.S. Senate in 2010, can be attributed to her strong showing
with her core base of support, including substantial wins among women (52/36),
Democrats (81/10), Hispanic voters (47/28), African American voters (78/8), voters age
30 to 45 (52/34), and voters age 46 to 65 (48/39).
Dhingras position improves further when undecided voters, who lean heavily
Democratic, are factored in. Among the 14% of voters who have not yet made up their
minds in the State Senate race, 52% support a generic Democrat to just 1% who support a
Republican; 62% approve of Gov. Inslees job performance to just 20% who disapprove;
and 84% disapprove of President Trumps performance to just 11% who approve. Given
the overwhelmingly Democratic leanings of undecided voters in LD 45, it is safe to
project an even wider margin of victory for Dhingra if the election were to be held today.
- The Republican Party is not nearly as well received in LD 45. President Donald
Trump carries a paltry 30% approval rating in the District, while almost two-in-
three voters (64%) disapprove of the job he is doing in his first two months in the
PPP surveyed 743 WA LD 45 voters from March 7-9, 2017. The margin of error
for the survey is +/-3.6 %. 80% of interviews for the poll were conducted over
landline telephone while 20% were conducted via cell phone.
