Overview

Standard operating procedures for hotel room attendants, or housekeepers,

are taught through the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute and
include everything from guest relations to how to properly make a bed and
clean a bathroom. The details of the job description for a hotel room
attendant are very important because the condition of the hotel room plays a
huge role in a property's reputation. Average salary of hotel attendants in
2009 is about $11 per hour, according to PayScale.com.

Guest Relations

Every employee of a hotel, including room attendants, is expected to warmly

greet guests, no matter whether they are working in a five-star hotel or an
extended stay property. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics,
more than two-thirds of the hotel industry's employees work in the service
sector of the industry. Hotel owners and managers rely on the customer
service abilities of their service staff to provide guests with a good feeling
about their stay.

Guest Safety
The job description of a room attendant includes ensuring the safety and well
being of guests. The housekeeping staff is responsible for checking guest
occupancy and verifying that rooms have been vacated. After knocking on
the door and entering the room, room attendants must visually inspect each
room before they begin any cleaning or organizing. They report any
inconsistencies to the executive housekeeper, hotel manager or
housekeeping supervisor. Room attendants also initiate requests for
maintenance work.

Cleaning

To ensure they don't miss anything, the room attendant should begin
cleaning the room at the end furthest from the door. Housekeepers wipe
down every surface, including tables, dressers, televisions and headboards.
Products and tools provided by the hotel should be utilized for cleaning. The
room attendant then removes the sheets and pillowcases from the bed and
remakes the bed with clean linens, tightening the edges for a crisp
appearance. Vacuuming is typically performed after the bathroom has been
cleaned, just prior to leaving the room.

Bathrooms

Room attendants should always don gloves prior to cleaning the bathrooms
in hotel rooms. Wet towels are picked up off the floor and replaced with clean
towels. Counters are straightened and wiped and the mirror is cleaned.
Housekeepers work from top to bottom in the bathroom, usually starting with
the mirror, in order to be thorough and remain on schedule. Shower stalls,
bathtubs and toilets are cleaned and sanitized. Toiletries that have been used
should be replaced.

Administrative Duties

Room attendants primarily work morning and afternoon shifts to make up

rooms for guest who are staying and prepare the rooms for new arrivals.
Hotel room attendants typically arrive at work in time for a brief staff
meeting with the housekeeping supervisor when they are updated on
ongoing hotel activities and provided with their room assignments. They
receive a log that includes every room to complete before they leave each
day.
Duties & Responsibilities
Hotel room attendants, also called housekeepers, clean up after guests and
prepare the rooms for new guests. They must also ensure privacy and
confidentiality for guests, in addition to addressing questions and concerns
and reporting maintenance issues or other problems. This job is sometimes
labor-intensive and can require you stay on your feet for several hours.
Because they sometimes interact with guests, room attendants must
represent the hotel in a positive light.

Cleaning and Preparing Rooms

The bulk of a room attendants job consists of cleaning hotel rooms from top
to bottom, both during a guests stay and in preparation for the next guest.
Hospitality careers website HCareers notes that attendants typically start
cleaning at the furthest end of the room and move toward the door. They
clean all surfaces and replace bed linens, then move on to the bathroom,
where they replace the towels and clean showers, bathtubs and toilets. After
finishing the bathroom, the attendant typically vacuums before leaving the
room.
Customer Service
Though their jobs are usually associated with cleaning, attendants or
housekeepers also interact with guests, handling complaints and answering
questions. The Grande Rockies Resort notes that attendants should serve as
an example to the rest of the staff by always being polite and professional
not only with customers, but also with fellow employees. Because a hotel
serves guests from all over the world, speaking more than one language is a
plus.

Other Duties

Room attendants typically report to the housekeeping supervisor and often

must come to work early enough for a briefing with her. The supervisor keeps
all of the attendants informed of anything that impacts their job duties, and
also gives them their room assignments for that day. Attendants usually
receive a log listing every room they must clean. They must also note on
these assignment sheets that they have cleaned each room, in addition to
turning over items left behind by guests to the lost and found department
and ensuring that room keys are handled securely.

Physical Demands
Hotel room attendants need considerable physical strength for many of their
duties. The Tallman Hotel for example, notes that its attendants might be on
their feet for up to five hours and be required to push or pull loads of up to
75 pounds. The hotel also points out that attendants must be able to grasp,
bend and stoop. The Grande Rockies Resort lists performing very physical
labor in its job description and notes that attendants might have to move
heavy objects.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Maintain Guestrooms
Housekeeping attendants clean and stock guestrooms so that guests are
assured of a comfortable stay. They also supply clean towels.

Clean Common Areas

The overall cleanliness of common areas is just as important as keeping

guestrooms clean. Guests oven see and evaluate the common areas before
they are shown to their rooms. Furthermore, dining areas, stores and other
common areas may bring hotels additional revenue.

Supplies
Sometimes housekeepers assist guests with special requests or supplies.
Housekeeping attendants may loan guests irons, sewing kits and other items
that will assist them. They also stock carts and closets with supplies.

Ensure Privacy
Sometimes housekeeping attendants monitor guests' needs for privacy.
Often hotels have cards guests can leave on their doors to alert cleaning
staff that they do not want to be interrupted.

Turndown Service
At some hotels, housekeeping staff is responsible for turning down bed linens
and providing mints or candy. In a resort hotel, a list of resort activities may
be provided as well.
Report Repairs
