1. INTRODUCTION
The following technical specification has the purpose to define the services and functions relative
to MSMX systems in order to comply with EN 12094-1 standard.

2. TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS

2.1. Status
It is the defined status of the d.e.c. or of the extinguishing system. The possible statuses of the
d.e.c. are:
pre-active status, when the first of the two signals that enable the extinguishing sequence is
activated.
active status, when the extinguishing sequence is enabled.
failure status, in case of failure of the d.e.c.
out-of-service status, when one or more functions of the d.e.c. are disabled
release status, when the flow of the extinguishing agent is signalled in the protected area. Or if
the d.e.c. does not dispose of the extinguishing flow indicator (PSH) when the outlet of the
extinguishing command is enabled (EV).
idle status, when the d.e.c. is fed by a device compliant with EN-54-4 standard and no other
statuses are signalled.
blocked status, when a disabling non electronic device prevents to release the extinguisher.

2.2. Acronyms
c.c.s. Control and signalling unit (MSMX unit).
d.e.c. Control and automatic delay electronic device (operated with c.c.s. cards).
a.d.a. Feeder equipment (Supply group, MSMX unit).

MultiSafe Function EN12094-1 Page 6 of 25 +NOSP-0015940 Revision 1 dated 25.11.10

3. FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

3.1. Overview
According to EN 12094-1 standard, the d.e.c. can be a separate device or represent an integral part
of a c.c.s. In our case, the functions relative to detection and functions relative to extinguishing are
performed by one single elaboration unit. As a consequence, signals are also viewed on a single
interface in compliance with EN 54-2 and EN 1294-1 standards. For this reason, in the following
paragraphs, acronyms d.e.c and c.c.s will be grouped up on the MSMX system. The MSMX system
is fed by a supply group in compliance with European standard EN 54-4. The elaboration unit of the
MSMX system is made up by two units (CPU card) with ready back-up in case of failure of one of
the two units. The inlets and outlets relative to the extinguishing systems are controlled by the
following types of cards:
MSMX-F3002-1/2 8-inlet card, for the monitoring of keys, pressure switches, selectors, etc...
MSMX-F5001-1/2 8-outlet card, to command and control solenoids or actuators in general.
MSMX-F5004-1/2 4-outlet card, to command and control solenoids or actuators in general.
MSMX-F5003-1 8-outlet card to command and control sound optical signalling
devices.
MSMX-F5002-1 16-outlet card with relay to command blocks, repetitions, etc
MSMX-F6001-1 Card that groups up the visual signals of an extinguishing area
Cards MSMX-F3002-2, MSMX-F5001-2, and MSMX-F5004-2 can be used in redounded
configuration to increase systems availability. The maximum number of extinguishing cards in the
various configurations must not exceed the values indicated in the following table:

Maximum no. of
Configuration extinguishing
cards
MSMX/1R 6
MSMX/2R 12
MSMX/1-10R 64

3.2. Environmental class

Since the d.e.c/s is an integral part of unit C20, the environmental class will be the one of the unit
in its whole. Class A: Temperature field from -5C to +50 C.

3.3. Elaboration of signals and warnings

The MSMX system receives and visualizes the signals relative to extinguishing areas. The
elaboration of logics is performed by the central unit. The information is sent to the visualization
unit. Both compulsory and optional functions are performed by the cards listed in paragraph 3.1.

MultiSafe Function EN12094-1 Page 7 of 25 +NOSP-0015940 Revision 1 dated 25.11.10

Receive and elaborate the signal indicating the beginning of the sequence, coming from
detection.
Monitor a controlled inlet line for manual enabling devices.
Supervision and command of outlet lines to command solenoids.
Supervision and command of outlet lines for sound/optical signals.
Visual and unmistakable indication of the various statuses.
Command of a failure open collector outlet.
Command of an open collector outlet and visual signalling of the release status.

3.5. Optional functions

The MSMX system performs the following optional functions:
Management of extinguishing delay.
Signal that represents the flow of the extinguishing agent.
Extension of emergency (Hold).
Start a secondary flooding sequence.
Exclusively manual mode (Aut-Off).
Commands to enable devices inside the system.
Back-up bottle extinguishing signals.
Commands to enable devices outside the system.

4. DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

4.1. Overview
The design of the hardware and software of this product is made in compliance with reference
standards EN 54-2 EN54-4 and EN 12094-1.

4.2. Mechanical requirements

The d.e.c/s are introduced in the MSMX system, therefore the environmental classification is the
same as the unit.

4.3. Luminous signals

A card, MSMX-F6001-1 model must be foreseen for each extinguishing area, which has the
purpose to group up all main signals relative to one single extinguishing area. Eight luminous led-
display signals are located on the front panel of said card, that indicates the following statuses:

5.1. Receipt and elaboration of incoming enabling signals
The system is able to receive an automatic enabling signal coming from detection cards and an
enabling signal coming from manual enabling devices connected to cards of MSMX-F3002-1 type.

After receiving the enabling signal (Activated Status) it is no longer possible to

perform any disabling in the extinguishing area in object.

5.2. Transmission of the extinguishing signal

After receiving the enabling signal, the system sends the signal to extinguishing devices
(Solenoids). The transmission of said signal (enabling) takes place only on the selected bench
(Main/Reserve).

5.3. Enabling of alarm devices

After receiving the enabling signal, the system sends the signal to Alarm devices.

The acknowledgement of these outlets takes place at access level 2

(Acknowledgement of alarms) after the release status has been engaged.

5.4. Signalling of presence of networks voltage

The signalling of the presence of networks voltage is that relative to the entire system (Led
Power-ON on display).

5.5. Active Status

The system enters into Activated status within a second from receiving incoming enabling signals.
After having enabled the activated status, the d.e.c. will activate TOAs outlet within one second.
The Activated status is signalled through:
- Enabling of local sound signal
- Fixed enabling of luminous signal relative to the Activated areas on the MSMX-F6001-1 card
- Fixed enabling of the command outlet for alarm devices (TOA).

5.6. Release Status

The release status is engaged once the signal that represents the flow of the extinguishing agent
(PSH) is received, or when the outlet of extinguishing devices (EV) is enabled. The way in which the
release status is enabled, can be defined during the programming phase. The Release status is
signalled through:
Fixed enabling of luminous Released signal on the MSMX-F60001-1 card.
Enabling of repetition outlet, release status. (Released condition)
If the release status is caused by the receipt of the signal which represents the flow of the
extinguishing agent without the d.e.c. Enabled (manual extinguishing through mechanical
command), the local sound signal will also be activated.

MultiSafe Function EN12094-1 Page 13 of 25 +NOSP-0015940 Revision 1 dated 25.11.10

5.7. Resetting of the Active status and Release status
The Active and Release statuses are reset through the manual Reset command, at access level 2
(Reset Panel).

The resetting function of the Active and Release statuses is inhibited for a period of
time that goes from 1 to 30 minutes. This time is set in the operator's cycle at access
level 3.

5.8. Failure Status

The system is able to recognize and signal the following failure statuses:
Interruption of automatic enabling signal coming from the central unit (Failure of detecting
card).
Interruption or short circuit of all inlet and outlet monitored lines.
Failures of internal supply.
Systems failures.
Improper execution of program and/or corruption of memorys content.

The failure statuses can be automatically reset once the cause has been eliminated. The failures
indicated in 5.10 are signalled as follows:
Enabling of local sound signal.
Fixed enabling of Fault luminous signal located on the units display.
Detailed visualization of the type of failure and total number of failures on the units display.
Enabling of repetition outlet, failure status.

5.9. Out of service status

All inlets and outlets relative to the extinguishing areas can be disabled/enabled singularly or all
together at access level 2.
Disabling operations are not influenced by the reset command (Reset).
The release status is not reached during the out of service status, except in case the signal
representing the flow of the extinguishing agent is received (PSH).

The enabling of a function and/or transmission support to actuators when an alarm is

on, causes the unloading of the extinguishing agent only at the end of the set
unloading enabling delay time.

The disabling operation as described in 5.12 is indicated at access level 1 on cards MSMX-S001.1
within two seconds, through a cumulative optical signal. The details of all exclusions are visible at
access level 1 on the units display.

5.10. Delay of the extinguishing signal

The system is able to delay the extinguishing command for a variable time between 0 and 60
seconds. This time is set on the system, in the operator's cycle at access level 3.

MultiSafe Function EN12094-1 Page 14 of 25 +NOSP-0015940 Revision 1 dated 25.11.10

5.11. Signal that represents the flow of the extinguishing agent
The system is equipped with inlets to receive the signal that represents the flow of the
extinguishing agent (PSH). The receipt of this signal without the enabled status causes the release
condition. As a consequence, all proper outlets will be activated.

5.12. Extension of emergency (Hold)

The system is equipped with inlets to receive the signals to extend emergency (Hold). This function
can work in the following ways:
Mode-A
The outlets to control fire suppression are not activated until the emergency extension device is
active. The disabling of the emergency extension device after the extinguishing delay time causes
the immediate enabling of the extinguishing command outlets (EV).
Mode-B
The outlets to control fire suppression are not activated until the emergency extension device is
active. The extinguishing delay time is brought back to the beginning each time the emergency
extension device is released.

In both cases, following the enabling of the emergency extension inlet, the system performs the
following activities:
Enabling of local sound signal (if previously acknowledged).
Fixed enabling of luminous signal HOLD on the MSMX-F6001-1 card.
Enabling of a repetition outlet signalling the emergency extension condition.

The failure status of the emergency extension inlet line inhibits the enabling of the
extinguishing command outlets.

5.13. Beginning of a secondary flooding sequence

The system is able to command a secondary flooding sequence. This sequence is enabled through
a manual device. The secondary flooding sequence is enabled only in the following conditions:
The primary extinguishing sequence has ended (release status).
The sound devices have not been acknowledged.
The system has not been reset.
The manual enabling inlet of the secondary sequence is active.

The outlet that controls secondary flooding is immediately enabled after the manual
enabling inlet of the secondary sequence has been activated with no delay.

MultiSafe Function EN12094-1 Page 15 of 25 +NOSP-0015940 Revision 1 dated 25.11.10

5.14. Exclusively manual mode (Aut-Off)
The system is equipped with inlets to receive the commutation signal from manual to
automatic/manual mode and vice versa. Following the enabling of this inlet, the system performs
the following activities:
Fixed enabling of luminous signal Auto-Off on the MSMX-F6001-1 card.
Enabling of repetition outlet, exclusively manual operation (AUT-OFF).

During the manual operation, the d.e.c. can only be enabled by activating the manual
enabling device (PB).

5.15. Commands to enable devices inside the system

The system is able to command the equipment located inside the extinguishing area. E.g. Pilot
bottles, optical warning devices, etc
For this purpose, the cards used are:
MSMX-F5003-1, MSMX-F5005-1 to command optical/sound signals
MSMX-F5001-1/2, MSMX-F5004-1/2 to command solenoids, valves, etc...
The connections of these devices are in compliance with the requirements indicated in paragraph
4.6.

5.16. Back-up bottle extinguishing signals (Reserve)

The system is equipped with inlets to receive the commutation signal of the extinguishing
command from the main battery to the back-up battery and vice versa. Following the enabling of
this inlet, the system performs the following activities:
Fixed enabling of luminous signal Reserve Bank on the MSMX-F6001-1 card.
Enabling of repetition outlet, back-up battery.

5.17. Commands to enable devices outside the system

The system is able to command the equipment located inside the extinguishing area. E.g. Closing
of doors, blocking of ventilation, etc...
For this purpose, the card to use is the MSMX-F5002-1 model.
The connections of these devices are in compliance with the requirements indicated in paragraph
4.7.

5.18. Emergency inhibition device (Inhibit)

The system is equipped with inlets to receive the signal coming from emergency inhibition devices.
During the idle and active statuses, the enabling of these devices causes the inhibition of the
extinguishing command signals until the condition is concluded and the active status has been
reset.

The failure status of the emergency inhibition inlet line inhibits the enabling of the
extinguishing command outlets.

MultiSafe Function EN12094-1 Page 16 of 25 +NOSP-0015940 Revision 1 dated 25.11.10

5.19. Enabling of alarm devices with different signals
The system is able to command the outlet of alarm devices with two different signals. For this
reason, the command outlet of the alarm devices is enabled in an intermittent manner, during the
warning time (pre-charge) and in a fixed manner during the release or emergency extension
statuses.

MultiSafe Function EN12094-1 Page 17 of 25 +NOSP-0015940 Revision 1 dated 25.11.10

5.20. Instructions for fixing the adhesive label
The adhesive label described in 6.0 must be applied on the right side of the frame, under the
existing one, according to EN54-2, EN54-4 standards.

For installation, programming, and maintenance operations relative to the MSMX-

F6001-1 card refer to the installation manual ST-048-EN.

5.21. Types of cables

The following cables have been approved for use in the following applications:

5.21.1. Analogue/balanced inlets

For these types of signal, it is advised to use screened cable CEI 2022 2x1.5 mm.

5.21.2. Addressed loops

For these types of signal, it is recommended to use screened cable CEI 2022. For cable lengths up
to 1 km, use 2x 1.5 mm cables. For cable lengths up to 2 km, use 2x2.5 mm cables.

In case of ring-type loops, for cable length it is meant the total length from the
starting point until the end point. It is not possible to use multiple cables in loops
connection.

5.21.3. 25Vdc power supplies

MultiSafe Function EN12094-1 Page 18 of 25 +NOSP-0015940 Revision 1 dated 25.11.10

For power supplies from the unit towards field devices, use cable CEI 2022 2x1.5 mm. Pay
particular attention in the selection of the conductors' section, in order to avoid that drops of
voltage along the cable could hinder the operation of devices.

5.21.4. Static outlets

For the connection between the unit and outlets (sirens, electro valves, tags), use fire-resistant
cable CEI 2036 of sizes 2x1.5 mm. Also in this case, verify the drop of voltage on the cable and
eventually increase the section.

5.21.5. Relay outlets

All relays must be used only with SELV voltages.
