John Maxwell Certification
by Clay Stauffer
I spent the majority of last week in Orlando, FL at an international leadership conference with
leadership guru John C. Maxwell. I have been reading Maxwells books on leadership for almost
20 years including The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, Leadership Gold, Many Communicate
but Few Connect, Today Matters, How Successful People Think, Sometimes We Win and Sometimes
We Learn and many others. I have now become a certified coach, speaker and trainer with
the John Maxwell Team. I did this to improve my own leadership skills so that I can be a better
pastor, preacher, and team leader. It has been well worth it. Steven Covey used to talk about the
importance of sharpening the saw and I believe in that concept wholeheartedly. We must never
stop growing.

There are many things that I could talk about from my experience last week. It was phenomenal and transformative. But I
thought I would use this article to share the DNA of the John Maxwell Team. It consists of 10 CORE VALUES, all of which are
very important.

VALUE #1 We Value People Johns mantra is to add value to

people who then go and add value to others. Every day we should
value people, believe in people, and unconditionally love them. People
simply do not care how much you know until they know how much you
care. Healthy relationships make a difference.

VALUE #2 Live Intentionally Its amazing how many people do not

live their lives intentionally. Many of us have high hopes but downhill
habits and its easy to slip back into those habits. We must live our lives
in a deliberate manner, being intentional about how we spend our time
and resources.

VALUE #3 Exceed Expectations Many people do the bare

minimum in life. They only do what it takes to get by. It takes more
effort to go above and beyond. Zig Ziglar once said, Go the extra mile,
theres not a lot of traffic there.

VALUE #4 Grow Daily Personal Growth is absolutely essential.

We must never stop growing and learning in life. Personal growth
enhances our potential. Personal growth enhances our capacity. You
simply cannot lead others until you first learn to lead yourself. Author and speaker John Maxwell with Clay

VALUE #5 Choose a Positive Attitude Attitude is always a choice. We may not be control what happens in life but we
can control how we respond. A positive attitude combined with enthusiasm makes a difference. Attitudes are contagious.
How do we know if somebody needs encouragement? If they are breathing, they need encouragement. There is truth to
the incredible power to positive thinking.

VALUE #6 Be Consistent People who are driven are consistent. They are committed to doing the same things every
day. Consistency compounds and consistency pays off over time. There are many distractions in life that will keep us from
being consistent.

VALUE #7 Equip People Leaders must be committed to reproducing themselves in others. John Maxwells calling is to
train other leaders who will then go and train others. What we have learned in life really matters when we go and teach it
to others.

VALUE #8 Lead By Example People will do what they see. A common mistake of leaders is to say one thing and then
do another. People care much more about what you do not just what you say. Modeling appropriate behavior is very
important. The hardest person to lead is yourself.

VALUE #9 Be a Catalyst for Transformation Before we can help transform others, we must first be transformed
ourselves. Before we can serve others, we must first take care of ourselves. We must be the change we want to see in the
world. It is always fulfilling to see lives transformed.

VALUE #10 Faith Faith is essential. There are many things that we can only accomplish with Gods help. With mortals
this is impossible. With God, all things are possible. Faith is believing that you can achieve great things with Gods help.

These are the values that make up the DNA of the John Maxwell Team and these are the values that I want to try to exhibit
here at Woodmont. Much of what we talked about is related to thinking, attitude, values, priorities, investing in others, and
learning from mistakes. I look forward to sharing more in the future. It was a great experience!

Life and Death
by Michael Graham
Gabriel Faur was born in Pamiers,
France in 1845, when Chopin was still
alive and only eighteen years after
Beethovens death. He knew most of the
Romantic eras composers and outlived
most of them.

A master of his craft and innovative in his work, his now classic
Requiem was first performed on January 16, 1888 for the funeral
of an architect in Paris with Faur conducting.

Concerning his Requiem, he once told an interviewer, It has been

said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death and
someone has called it a lullaby of death. But, I see death as a happy
deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as
a painful experience.

In the Requiem, Faur is particularly poignant in his contrasting

depiction of light and darkness, heaven and hell, life and death,
salvation and damnation. These opposites were, no doubt, heavily
on the mind of Jesus as he willingly approached his coming
suffering. As surely as the Son of God anticipated his forthcoming
agony, he also knew the final outcome - victory over sin, death, hell
and the grave.

Throughout the work, Faur gives us this sense as the text descends
into hell in the Offertory and rises in victory in the Sanctus. The

New Woodmont Fire and Safety Procedures

by Mike Brent
After several months of planning and the recent completion of training sessions with our Sunday School Class Leaders, Nursery
Workers, Elders, Deacons and Shepherds, Woodmonts new fire and safety procedures are now in place. Just as you are told when you
board an airplane to review the safety instruction procedures in the seat-back pocket, we urge you to review these procedures. Here
are the basics:
In the event of a fire alarm or other announcement to evacuate the Sanctuary, EVERYONE should immediately stand up and move
towards the Narthex to exit the building using both the side aisles and the center aisle. When the alarm horns and strobes activate do
NOT wait for any announcement as to whether this might be a drill or false alarm. From the center aisle continue out the double front
doors, from the north side aisle continue out the north side door (facing the Mansion), and from the south side aisle continue out
the south side door (facing Hillsboro Road). From the balcony, come down the steps and join the line of people exiting via the double
front doors. Shepherds Team members and Deacons will have all those doors open and will provide further instructions. Once outside
proceed north towards the grassy area in front of the Mansion (or around the Mansion to the grassy area behind Campbell West), or
south towards the grassy area in front of South Hall and/or the Outdoor Chapel, so the sidewalk in front of the building remains clear
for others to exit the building.
PARENTS: Do NOT go to the Kids Commons area or Nursery to pick up your children, as they will be not be there! Sunday
School Class Leaders, Nursery Workers, Elders, Deacons and Shepherds will have escorted all children out of the building
(Kids Commons classrooms evacuate to the Outdoor Chapel area, and the Nursery evacuates to the grassy area behind
Campbell West). Fire Evacuation Maps/Routes and other information are now posted in the Nursery and all Classrooms
(adult, youth and children), as well as Maps/Routes in Drowota Hall (for the Bridge Service or other events in that area), the
Gathering Space, and the Sanctuary. Please familiarize yourself with these Maps/Routes and other information the next time
you are in your classroom, your childrens classrooms, and/or other areas. We urge you to arrive early before church one day
soon, or stay a few minutes after church, and walk the evacuation route, with your children, to their designated evacuation
area, as well as walking your own evacuation route.
Even if the alarm horns and strobes cease, continue to evacuate the building until an all clear announcement is made by emergency
responders and/or Shepherds Team members. Once outside the building, move away from the doors so others may continue to exit,
and use the sidewalks and grassy areas so that the driveways remain clear for emergency vehicles.
COMING NEXT: Shelter in Place areas have also been designated for everyone to move to in the event of a tornado or other
emergency. Those locations are also shown on the Fire Evacuation Maps/Routes, and we will publish more information about those
procedures soon.
WHY WE ARE DOING THIS NOW: The Woodmont Board created what is now known as the Safety and Security Committee, to perform a
comprehensive review of our campus and emergency procedures, including the engagement of professionals skilled in church safety
and security. The SSC learned that while Woodmont Christian Preschool already had detailed plans in place, including regular training
and fire drills, there were no detailed procedures in place for emergencies during a church service, Sunday School, or other gatherings.
The Shepherds Team was then created, with primary duties including assistance to members and visitors in the event of an emergency.
The slow reaction of the congregation to a Fire Alarm on October 30, 2016 (triggered by smoke detectors as a result of a heavy water
vapor fog created during a puppet show in the Kids Commons area) indicated this area of the Safety and Security Procedures needed
to be prioritized. That was reinforced again on March 7, 2017 when a small fire occurred during a luncheon in Drowota Hall (fortunately
the fire was quickly extinguished with only minimal damage). That fire activated a smoke detector, which triggered a Fire Alarm. As
they have regularly practiced, the teachers and children in the PreSchool promptly exited the building. Unfortunately, most of the
attendees at the luncheon ignored the Fire Alarm, confirming for the SSC that periodic reminders such as this communication are
important for everyone. The next alarm may be due to a life-threatening emergency requiring prompt evacuation for the safety of
everyone.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact any member of the SSC.
