I believe that learners have the highest potential
though they have different abilities. They are rational, emotional, spiritual and social beings. They are all good and unique. Their environment can be a good motivating factor for their learning.
I believe that a good and educated person uses
both his reason and emotion. He takes responsibility for all his words and actions. He acts with sincerity. He accepts the reality that he is not perfect and can commit mistakes. He respects and listens to others opinion. He smiles for the success of others and is will never wish to put them down just to place himself above them. I believe that values should be inculcated in each and every learner. They must use it in their daily interaction to other people for them to build good relationships. Learners should manifest good values for their success and development as an individual and as a citizen of their country.
I believe that my primary task as an educator is to give
maximum opportunity for the students to bring out their highest potentials. I must teach not only the mind but also the heart, the spirit and the body. I must be a role model to them and make the classroom a secured place where love, acceptance, justice, peace, trust and honesty lives. I must make them realize that what they learn inside the classroom can be used in the bigger world outside them. I believe that to make my tasks, I must help the learners master the fundamental skills that will serve as their foundation to learn the complex skills. I must provide real-life experiences to them in form of tasks and explorations. I must relate my lesson in relation to the present and future situations and also see how the concepts worked in the past. I must integrate morals in my lessons for them to be not only a person with great mind but also with a big heart. Procedural Writing United Nations Headquarters, New York, USA- Philippine DENR Secretary Ramon Paje announced that the Philippines signed the Paris Climate Agreement and that the Philippines would be adopting the agreement. He said- The Philippines, a highly vulnerable developing nation, with one of the most ambitious targets, has already taken steps to pursue national actions to address climate change through its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution or INDC. To secure a sustainable future, the Philippines is pursuing value- adding strategies to ensure the provision of ecosystem services and green growth to address pollution and environmental degradation. Procedural Writing As such, DENR is tapping you and other young recycling advocates from DLSZ to spearhead a campaign advertisement to lessen the amount of waste that pollute the country and present effective procedural steps to create useful products made from recyclable materials to raise environmental awareness among the youth and fellow school mates for them to carry out concrete actions in addressing climate change. It also aims to continue the mission of the church through a fundraising activity for charitable work. During the Lasallian Earth Day celebration, the campaign advertisement will be presented to the school community. Likewise, the useful products from recyclable materials will be placed in booths for marketing. Representatives from DENR and DLSZ will evaluate your useful products from recyclable materials, effective and creative procedural steps and campaign advertisement accordingly. Procedural Writing
Language Task - Write an effective and creative procedure of 5-7
steps on how to make the useful products made from recyclable materials. The procedure will be evaluated based on the following: appropriateness and clarity of steps, organization, sentence structure and mechanics. Descriptive Writing Descriptive Writing Nowadays, people look for something unique when choosing a travel destination. Travelers want to experience different cultures, interact with nature and develop a sense of community as added features to their itinerary. As a young Lasallian travel blogger who cares for the Earth, you were assigned to come up with a Travel Blog about the community that uses different alternative energy sources. Your blog should contain descriptive paragraphs that accurately depict the uniqueness, creativity and resourcefulness of the community, highlighting the beauty and benefits of utilizing non-conventional sources of energy. Your piece will be featured in different travel websites that are accessible to conservationists of all ages. Your blog (composed of ample descriptive paragraphs) will be evaluated based on Content/Creativity, Use of Sensory Details/Adjectives, Organization/Unity, Use of Varied Sentence Patterns, Sentence Construction/Grammar and Writing Mechanics. Letter Writing As a response to the Lasallian Mission of promoting relevant and progressive learning to transform the society, the School Counseling Office introduced the Career Week program that enables the students to be goal-directed towards their career paths. One of the activities that has helped students be acquainted with different work fields was the recently held Alternative Learning Experience in Kidzania. To sustain motivation towards their ambition, a letter writing activity, entitled, Dear Idol, I Want To Be You, has been launched. Your counselor tasked you to write a personal letter to a person in your chosen field of work whom you have always admired. Tell him/her the experiences that you had in Kidzania that made you realize that you want to pursue that field too. You may also include questions that you have always wanted to ask. Before sending the letter, your counselor and your Language teacher, will check on the following: content/focus, grammar, organization, letter format and mechanics. Looking Back And Moving Forward They say that some people are born to be teachers, and I believe, I am one. Since I was young, I have already envisioned myself to become a teacher. Before it used to be a role play in the afternoon with my younger cousins, but now, I have just finished my 6th Academic Year in De La Salle Zobel and I will continuously teach minds, touch hearts, and transform lives as a Grade 5 Language Teacher. Many would think that a new and young part of the profession could have easily adjusted in the educational revolution that has changed not only the Philippine Educational System, but the entire teaching-learning process, but, in reality, it is a continuous cycle of successes, challenges and some bumps along the journey. When I started in the field in 2011, I would definitely admit that I was the typical new teacher who has a lot of ideas in mind and would just want to make things happen. Although I have shunned the usual teacher talk by providing teacher-made board games, using creatively designed presentations, designing a variety of worksheet, and by letting the class answer online exercises once in a while, I had realized that there was a gap between me and my students. There were moments of frustration that even if I knew that I had prepared something new for them using the available resources back then, but I felt they were expecting more from me and the subject. This could be accounted for what Prensky (2001) has posited whether or not teachers who are digital immigrants are ready to teach the generation in the 21st century who are digital natives who are more comfortable with technology using it in their life with a variety of purposes such as communicating with friends, gaming, and listening to music. Moreover, it has been and will always be a challenge for me to keep the learners challenged since they have been using the language not just only in school but also in their homes and in daily transactions in their respective communities. The tendency for them to be bored and unmotivated is higher since they might perceive that they know a lot about the language already Truly, students' attitudes and prejudices affect the way they engage in class. This unfilled space did not make me stop pushing myself to accept challenges that would enable me to augment the changes that both
teachers and learners face.
With the situation I was facing, I took the opportunity to teach with the use of the Mobile Learning Device, the iPad, in 2013. Probably, the noticeable convenience the gadget has brought was to make primary learning materials such as books handy through their digital versions (e-book). Worksheets were in PDF files, thus there were less papers being printed. At first, the use of the mobile learning was for substitution of traditional class materials. However, as time passed by, the use of the mobile learning device became more than just a tool for convenience. It has been an integral and vital part of language learning itself. Students became more excited and involved in class activities. If board games were provided though improvised paper before, now they can play it through their iPads. I personally designed a more visually appealing board game for the students to converse among themselves using different kinds of sentences according to purpose. In addition, the dice that I usually provide was already replaced by Classroom Dice. This is an evidence that with the use of technology, communicative competence could also be developed. Learners unconsciously apply sentence construction skills and become more open and responsive while communicating to others. Grammar concepts could also be easily fortified with songs, video presentations, Nearpod exercises, self-paced online exercises, and authentic materials such as blogs, signages and other texts that will show how language works in real life. With the ease in the access of materials, students could visualize the strong connection between the academe and the world outside. Due to the fact that 21st learners should be able to communicate their ideas effectively through different mediums, the integration of technology could provide students with a variety of choices where they can be able to convey their thoughts. Padlet is one effective application where students can be able to voice out their opinion and since it is real time, the teacher can also check on address misconceptions that students have immediately. Moreover, learners can also express grammar concepts through Popplet where they can also see connections in a personally created mind maps. To simulate oral language in its everyday use, Comic Headlite is used. Learners, usually in groups, are asked to apply grammatical concepts by creating comic strips. Their works are presented and processed in such a way that they could be able to distinguish the difference between oral and written discourses to also improve their academic writing skills. On the other hand, oral presentation have also been easier and less stressful for the learners since they are aided by Keynote presentations. This boosts their confidence and prepares them in actual work environment. Performance Tasks which is the core of 21st century learning have been scaffolded successfully through process writing approach blended with face-to- face and online activities. Let me share how writing process approach is implemented in a way that both writing and technical skills are developed. When the students had Procedural Writing, specifically writing a recipe of a traditional Filipino dessert or delicacy, the pre-writing task involved watching of an instructional video of their assigned food (with no audio). To ensure the quality of the videos that they are going to watch, all videos can only be accessed in a teacher-designed website created through Weebly during school hours. After which, papers for the first draft and the second draft were given to students based on their pacing. Self, Peer, and Teacher editing also aided in the process writing which is made easier through checklists and editing guides. From their drafts written on paper, they were able to create recipe cards that they soon tried in their HELE class and at home. In the same token, the skills in written and electronic correspondence are both enhanced through the use of technology. Just recently, many apps were utilized to scaffold letter writing like Popcarte, a postcard generator app, and Pocket Lite, a letter generator app. This prepared the students to write their handwritten letters which they have also presented through Pic Collage, so they can have a chance to show their work through e-mail to those recipients who are far from them. Integrating technology to the teaching-learning process also helps in classroom management. Students can develop their skills in managing their time in accomplishing activities through Classroom Timer. Thus, students become more productive. Student participation could also be increased through name and group selector. As experienced, at first I thought student would be afraid and they will be more shy to answer if they would see their names and class numbers on the screen, but otherwise happened. As a matter of fact, they took it positively. They were always on their toes and got used to the practice that they were the ones who were suggesting to use it in class. Hence, they unconsciously develop in themselves the ability to express themselves more spontaneously. I could say that with the integration of technology, the learners become more engaged into language learning. I have truly ignited their spirit in learning. I have kept my students and myself challenged and motivated. But I admit, there are still so much to improve on and the first step to progress is to take challenges and risks. In taking challenges and risks, we discover something new.... something better and with this discovery, we could be able to offer a better experience to students which they will remember even after school. As the saying goes, they will forget facts, definitions, and equations, but they will never forget the way you make them feel. To end, I want to quote some lines from the One La Salle Prayer, "Today I start the change I want to see. Even if Im not the light, I can be the spark." As educators, may we all start a spark within us, so our students will be able to ignite in them a fire that will light our future.
