OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General A: Students will acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement
Learning activities; dance, games, types of gymnastics, individual activities and activities in an
Outcomes: alternative environment; e.g., aquatics and outdoor pursuits.
C: Students will interact positively with others.

Specific A95 apply and refine ways to receive, retain and send an object with increased speed, accuracy and distance
Learning in skills specific to an activity
Outcomes: C95 develop practices that contribute to teamwork
C96 identify and demonstrate positive behaviours that show respect for self and others

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will:
1. Come up with various strategies as a team to overcome their opponents during gameplay, based on the how
their opponents play.
2. Use various shots that move their opponent all around the court and direct them in different directions.

ASSESSMENTS

Observations: - Students will demonstrate various shots depending on how their opponents play and
refine those shots by focusing on speed, accuracy and distance.
- Students will strategize to aim birdie into either the back corners of the court, just at the
net, or along the sidelines. Little to no action of the birdie being hit at the opponent but
there is an effort to change up the shots and make the opponent move.
- Students will show practices that contribute to teamwork such as calling the birdie for
each other or helping each other out when confused.
- Students will show respect for others by shaking hands before and after game play.
Arguments should not happen AT ALL during these games.
- Students should show good sportsmanship towards other students during game play.

Key Questions: 1. Why do you see doubles teams cover the court front and back and side to side? What is
the difference or the two positions?
2. What are some shots that can be put together to create a strategy during a game?

Products/Performan Attacking:
ces: - When attacking, you should adopt a formation with one player in the rear court, and the
other player towards the front of the court.
Defending:
- When defending, you must adopt a side-by-side formation so that you can cover the full
width of the doubles court. If you cant cover the full width of the court, then you will
lose the rally immediately to any well-placed smash (or even a drop shot).

nets are put away.

Introduction Time

Attention Grabber We will be focusing on strategic play this class.

Assessment of Students have been introduced to all the types of shots used in badminton. Now it

Prior Knowledge is time to use those shots strategically in game play.

Expectations for - Students will not talk when instruction is being given. If students are
Learning and talking, I will simply wait till everyone is silent before continuing.
Behaviour - No banging of rackets on the floor or against other ones, if students do it
will result in a 10 pushup punishment. This goes for the entire unit.
- Students do not have to be exceptional at the skill, but I ask that they try
their best, and to understand that they are being marked more on
improvement, and less on skill level.

Transition to Body Discussion about court strategies: Why doubles can be played front and back and
side to side:
- When a team is in control of the birdie they play front and back, but as
soon as they see that they are going to be smashed on, they move side to
side to cover more left to right areas of the court.
10 min
What are some other strategies when playing?
- Serving strategies?
- Clear strategies?
- Smash?
- Drop shot?

Body Time

Learning Activity Team 1 VS 1 Badminton

#1 - In this drill there are 3-4 people to a team. The team then is up against
another team of 4 people. However, there is only one person playing at a
time. It is 1 vs 1 but as soon as the person hits the birdie, they must get
out of the way and run to the back of the court on their team.
- Students can hit any shot they would like so this is why strategy is 10 min
important because they have the ability to hit the birdie anywhere on the
court.
- During this constant change of players, the game is being played with
actual points and will go to the normal 21.
- Team that gets there first wins

Teacher Notes: - Student must cooperate and work together as a team in order to be
Assessments/ successful. By moving out of the way quickly, teammates can move on
Differentiation the playing area and assume a ready position for the upcoming shot.
- Walk around and observe students while giving constant feedback
whether that be towards a skill, or a reminder of the rules of the game.
- You can differentiate by having a different number of students (3 on 3)
just as long as its even.
- You can differentiate the difficulty by adding in a window of shots to
only use. (i.e. students can only hit backhand shots)

Learning Activity Individualized Kings Court 20 min

#2 - Point based system
- You can only accumulate points in the kings spot on the court
- Each court is its own kings court (with the goal being to be in the 4th spot
on the court)
- Player one on the court always serves to three no matter what.
2
Adapted from a template created by Dr. K. Roscoe
Lesson Plan Template ED 3501 (Version C)
- The strategy here is the other three players that arent the king are trying
to team up to set the king up (strategy here is important)
- Its essentially every man for himself but overall the goal is to try and
get the king out. The longer the king stands on the court, the more points
they are able to get.
- Teams of 5 or 6

Teacher Notes: Assessment:

Assessments/ - Students are working out strategies together to get the king out. Setting u
Differentiation certain shots to each other. (player 3 sets up a clear to 2 so player 2 can
smash to player 4 which is the king)
- Students are combining shots together to create a strategy to get all other

students on the court out (after all it is you against everyone)
- Students are aware of each others surroundings (because there is another
player on the court)
- Students are not cheating (if the birdie lands on the line in the middle of
the court, the person in the higher position is out)

Closure Time
Consolidation of A Variety of learning tips:
Learning:
- Hitting the shuttle consistently high and deep to give time to recover.
- Try to aim shots to the opponents weaker side (usually backhand), to
give the advantage off a weak return.
- Try to place shots before adding more power, because more power will
usually result in more errors
- Try to keep the opponent on the move as much as possible and not play
me to you badminton. This is when two players just stand in the center
of the court and hit the shuttle back and forth between them. Try

moving the opponent from the net to the back and from the forehand to
backhand side to fatigue them quicker
- Keep winning, keep playing the same way
- Keep losing change the style of play
- Try to change the speed of play, by mixing up shots. For example hit
some slower shots, such as, drop shots and net shots, with faster shots
in between, such as, smashes, and drives.
- Always play to personal strengths and try to exploit the opponents
weaknesses
